Kristi Brill reported on this month’s copy of The Rotarian. There is an article about a Rotary club in New Orleans who helped re-open the state’s oldest high school, formerly under 8 feet of floodwater after Hurricane Katrina. “Waste Not, Want Not” is an article about the Rotary’s efforts in Washington State. District 5030 is involved in a program distributing food and fresh produce to feed the hungry. And she reported about a club dedicated to funding WW2 veterans’ trips to Washington, DC, to visit the memorial there. Finally, there is an article about “Gen Y”—those born between 1980 and the late 90’s, and the Rotary’s efforts to engage this generation in service work.
Lynda Phillippi reported that we now have a Volunteer Coordinator for Uncorked and asked club members to each bring 2 bottles of $20-plus wine to one of the upcoming meetings. Uncorked is 9 weeks away and there are plenty of opportunities to be involved
President Elect Maryalice Russell reported on the District Conference in Seaside last week and gave a special thanks to Assistant Governors Art Bradley and Jim Walker. The conference provided a great opportunity to hear from Interact students from around the state and President Elect Maryalice hopes for better attendance next year.
MCMINNVILLE SCHOOL DISTRICT TEACHER RECOGNITION

Meredith asked her students what makes a good teacher and attached their responses to a large drawing two of her students made of her.

Brenna said she believes we are all out on Earth to do a job and hers is to be a teacher. She thanked the club for the dictionaries we provide to 4th grade students in the district.

Teacher of the Year: David Holmes, 6th grade CORE, 7th grade Language Arts

McMinnville High School—Principal Kris Olsen
Teacher of the Year: Dr. Kerrie Savage, English/Leadership.
Dr. Savage’s students are able to earn dual credits (high school and college) for her English Literature classes and she values a noisy classroom over a quiet one.
CLOSING
President-Elect Maryalice asked the club to recognize the hard work and dedication of these teachers, both to their profession and to their students, and the club responded with a standing ovation.
Maryalice then asked club members to think about their own actions: are you just a “knife and forker”, one who comes to eat but doesn’t get involved? Or are you an active committee member, working hard to further the Rotary ideal of service above self?
She asked committee chairs and members to stand and be recognized and encouraged all club members to be active participants in club activities and projects.
