Jeff Sargent put out “one last call” for tickets to the Uncorked party board events. There are still a few seats left for both the Coelho Winery event on the 11th and the Poker Party at the Methven’s on the 17th. Tickets are $100 each. Please see Pam Watts or Jeff if you’re interested.

President-elect Maryalice Russell introduced Lee Means, who spoke about the Pepsi Challenge. She encouraged club members to vote every day, from every email address and even text from cell phones. The Pepsi Company is actually giving away a million dollars every month—this is money they’ve channeled away from Superbowl advertising and are putting to good use for charities. YCAP has the opportunity to receive $250,000 if they get enough votes. This link will take you to the YCAP page to login and vote. http://pep.si/bYUeLl. Don't forget to book mark the page.

Kristi Brill highlighted some articles in this month’s The Rotarian magazine.

There is a good article about the people of Haiti this month, and an article about the ongoing challenges for polio survivors. The current Rotary International President, Ray Klingensmith, is the 100th president of Rotary International and feels there is strength in the 33,000 clubs worldwide.

President-elect Maryalice Russell asked us all to dig deep for Pennies for Polio. She asked Past President Chuck Pattishall to update the club on the September 11th “Panhandling for Polio” Day. Past President Chuck read an email from Darrick Price, chair of the panhandling event.

We still need 4 more Rotarians to help on the 11th. There are two shifts available: from 8:00-10:00 am or from 10:00-noon. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation will match the money we raise.

According to Chuck, Darrick mentioned that he is relaxing on a beach with his “smoking hot wife” and added that he loves, respects, and admires his mentor, Chuck Pattishall.

MAIN EVENT

Ray Fields introduced our speaker, former Oregon State Supreme Court Justice Betty Roberts.

Betty chose to discuss her life and career through the lens of her 2008 memoir,
“WITH GRIT AND BY GRACE: BREAKING TRAILS IN POLITICS AND LAW, A MEMOIR.”

Betty’s daughter, Dian Odel, (right) read three passages from the book.

Betty was the first woman to serve on the Oregon State Supreme Court and the first woman to serve on the Oregon State Court of Appeals.

Her memoir is really three histories: those of the state, of the women’s movement in Oregon, and her own personal story.

Betty grew up in Kansas and Texas and her life was shaped by her father’s illness and subsequent paralysis. She learned that a woman needs to be tough and resilient to cope with life, lessons learned by watching her mother struggle to support the family when her father became unable to work.

Betty married fairly young and had four children, but the life of a banker’s wife didn’t satisfy her, especially when she considered what she’d do if something happened to her husband. Against his wishes, she returned to college, eventually attaining a master’s degree. She taught school, became an attorney and entered politics at a time when banker’s wives were supposed to play bridge and golf and run the PTA.

After her divorce, Betty had the added challenge of being a single parent. In 1965, the society column of the newspaper remarked on what she and her female colleagues wore to the Legislature and on her four children gathered around her on the floor of the State House. Female politicians weren’t covered in the news section.

She and the other women of the Legislature convened a women’s caucus to pass the Equal Right’s Amendment in the 70’s. Betty says that 1971 was the dividing line between old and new style politics in Oregon. Citizen’s groups were lobbying for land-use reform, recycling measures and transportation issues. She thinks Tom McCall was Oregon’s most progressive governor.

Betty believes that Oregon is still a progressive state, but laments the negative political advertising tactics and the general anger present in politics today.

Though Betty faced many challenges as a working mother, some of her struggles, along with those of other women in her day, helped pave the way for the childcare assistance that is available now. She closed her presentation by encouraging people to get involved with issues they care about.

CLOSING ANNOUNCEMENTS

At the end of Betty’s presentation, President-elect Maryalice Russell asked Betty to sign a book for the Early Reader’s Program and gave her a tote bag. Betty had books available to purchase after the meeting.

Next week’s program: Joni George from Climax Portable Machines.
