1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

We need an Uncorked Art and Wine Auction Chair for 2011. If you are interested please let President Bruce know.

Panhandle for Polio
Darrick Price is Chairing the Panhandle for Polio Event taking place Saturday September 11th from 8:00 am to noon.  You can choose the early or later 2 hour shift—just meet at Cornerstone Coffee 15 minutes before your shift and Darrick will fix you up with everything you need to be a successful panhandler. (Kind of like the firemen’s’ “Fill the Boot.”) You will exhort the passersby to make a financial contribution to eradicate polio worldwide. You will get to jump around and look a bit foolish for a very worthy cause. Best of all, you will be in the excellent company of your fellow Rotarians who believe passionately in our ability to change the world, one vaccination at a time. Please let Darrick know if you have a couple of hours to spare that morning.

President Bruce mentioned that 4,400 kids were vaccinated for polio last week as a result of our efforts.

MAIN EVENT

Scott Chambers introduced AMY WOODARD, 2010 RYLA scholar.
RYLA stands for Rotary Youth Leadership Awards. The purpose of RYLA is to recognize young leaders and provide them with an opportunity to expand their perceptions and ideals. RYLA participants gain knowledge about themselves and learn to work with others in order to become a better person and a future leader.
Participants are selected through an essay and application process through their local Rotary Club. Once selected to receive the award, young adults are invited to attend a weeklong seminar aimed at further developing their interpersonal and leadership skills. Speakers included:

  • Bob Farrell of Farrell's Ice Cream Parlors and Newport Bay Restaurants
  • Junki Yoshida, Founder of Yoshida Sauces

During the week RYLA participants:

  • Share and explore new ideas
  • Enhance communications skills to improve their relationships with family, partners, co-workers, and society
  • Collect innovative ideas for key leadership and successful business strategies
  • Network with positive leaders
  • Explore family dynamics, interpersonal relationships and values
  • Learn about substance abuse awareness
  • Learn how to better understand ourselves and others
  • Learn Key stress and relaxation techniques
  • Learn about world fellowship, understanding the peace process (conflict resolution) and environmental issues

RYLA Eligibility

  • Open to men and women, 19-28 years old.
  • Candidates should hold a position of leadership or be interested in expanding and displaying leadership qualities.

Accommodations: Developed as a family estate during the 1920's, Menucha overlooks the magnificent Columbia River Gorge. It offers recreational facilities for swimming, volleyball, hiking, tennis and basketball in a beautiful wooded setting. The center features dormitory style rooms with showers, and provides home-cooked meals. AMY said that this year there were a lot more women than men attending RYLA—as a result there were 2 bathrooms for 25 women. When AMY arrived at the camp, she was overwhelmed with all the group hugging going on—but by the end of the week she understood that opening herself up to experiences that stretched her boundaries provided valuable growth and awareness. She enjoyed mentoring the younger students. AMY ended her presentation by thanking the club for the opportunity. In her “real” life, AMY is working on her MBA from Willamette University and works for Scott Chambers at Headwater Investment Consulting.

CLOSING ANNOUNCEMENTS

After the presentation, AMY signed a book for the Early Readers’ program and got to keep the snazzy tote bag. Next week, President Bruce will be in Tucson on family business and President-elect Maryalice Russell will preside over the meeting. Our guest speaker will be Retired Oregon Supreme Court Justice BETTY ROBERTS. This event will be publicized so if you plan to bring guests, please contact Paul Elias at 434-6515.  Members do not need to RSVP.
