ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

MEMBER RECOGNITION

Darrick Price took up his customary role, presiding over the Member Recognition portion of the meeting.

Patrick Fuchs announced that he was not only celebrating his birthday, but also celebrating 17 years of marriage to his wife Lisa.

Dan Gardner, who has been away for much of the summer, belatedly announced his birthday in July, and also noted 28 years of marriage to his wife and best friend, Laurie.

Kelly Odegaard was recognized for his 31st wedding anniversary. He and his wife, Lorie, will celebrate at the coast.

Tom Tankersley announced that he was also observing his wedding anniversary with his wife, Jann.

BRAGS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Art Bradley announced that the new District 5100 Directory is now available.

Norm Goss reported that he recently earned a “makeup” by utilizing the “E-Club” option on the Internet.  He spent over 90 minutes online with a Rotary Club from Arizona (a minimum of 30 minutes is required), and strongly recommended the experience to anyone who needs or wishes to get makeup credit.

Lee Vasquez offered a brag about fellow Rotarian Waldo Farnham’s attractive haircut, and paid $1.00 for the privilege of sharing it with the membership.

Darrick Price concluded the Brags & Announcements segment by offering three of his customarily lame jokes.  They were, blessedly, quite brief.

President Bruce Dickson returned to the podium to make a few special announcements.  He noted three recent resignations from the club: Bruce Stewart, Ryan Arzner, and Jeff Long.  Time availability, new job requirements, and financial considerations all factored into the resignations.  Bruce then noted that Bob Emrick’s wife Nancy will be performing with her trio (Diva and the Dixies) on Saturday at the Laurel Ridge Winery.  He then shared a very interesting article about a woman, THIE CONVERY, (right) a Rotarian from the Rotary Club of Dundas, Ontario, Canada, who attempted to swim across Lake Ontario in order to raise money (and awareness) for the eradication of polio.  Although she failed to complete the crossing as planned, she managed to raise over $44,000 dollars for the program.  Bruce found this to be quite an inspiring story, to the extent that he said that he would match all contributions to the Pennies For Polio “red bucket” for this meeting.  Way to go, Bruce! (you can read the entire story at http://www.rotary.org/en/MediaAndNews/News/Pages/100818_news_polioswim.aspx).

MAIN EVENT

Brandon Malloy took the podium to introduce our featured speaker, STACY STACK.  STACY is a Director of Training (Northwest) for Express Employment Professionals.  She has been with the firm for over 17 years, and is certified through the National Association of Personnel Services as a Certified Temporary Staffing Specialist.  As an expert in assisting customers in analyzing staffing practices and identifying performance improvement strategies, STACY oversees customer client satisfaction and retention for three offices in the state of Colorado, as well as offices located in California, Nevada, and Australia.

The theme of STACY’S presentation was “Talking About Our Generations”, an evaluation of the different generations of people who are in the workplace.  There are currently four principle “generations” in the workforce today:  Traditionalists (born prior to 1946), Boomers (1946-1964), GenXers (1964-1978), and Millennials (born after 1978).  STACY presented some fascinating facts and figures that characterize the typical members of each generation, as it applies to the workplace.  Not surprisingly, Traditionalists place a very high premium on loyalty, accountability, security, and honoring the chain of command.  Boomers are particularly drawn towards social reform and the value of working together, attributes that suggest the influence of radical social and economic changes that took place during the 1960’s.  GenExers are notably independent, straightforward, and technologically savvy, growing to maturity in step with the advent of the communications boom and the growth of Internet technology.   Millennials are hopeful, collaborative, and determined hard workers who have known the Computer Age for most of their lives (IBM’s PC Junior arrived in 1980, as you may recall).  Overall, the presentation was a fascinating synopsis of the relationships that exist between co-workers of vastly different ages and different socio-economic origins.

CLOSING ANNOUNCEMENTS

Following STACY’S talk, Bruce Dickson invited her to sign a book for the Early Reader’s Program at the McMinnville Library and then presented her a special bag. Bruce then adjourned the meeting at 1:15

NEXT WEEK:  Amy Woodard will share her recent experiences at RYLA!
