ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

McMinnville Rotary Meeting Summary

OPENING

President-Elect Maryalice Russell presided over the meeting. President Bruce Dickson’s mother passed away so he was out of town. (Cards may be mailed to President Bruce at 18035 NE Fairview Drive Dundee, OR 97115.) Today's greeters were Abe Hanson and Brandon Malloy. The inspirational moment was presented by John Larsen and the flag salute: Frank Bumpus. Past President Chuck Pattishall, Steve Battaglia, and John Larsen were recognized for setting up the meeting room today.

INTRODUCTION OF VISITING ROTARIANS AND GUESTS

Steve Larson introduced NICOLE BLAKE, who is thinking about joining the club.

DUDLEY FROST visited from the Sunrise Rotary in McMinnville.

Jeff Peterson introduced EHREN CASTLE, Edwina’s son, and his own daughter, outbound exchange student candidate MIRIAM PETERSON. (MIRIAM graciously filled in as “microphone gal” this time.)

Araceli Ortiz introduced MELANIE PURVIS, soon to be leaving for Japan as our 2010-2011 outbound exchange student.

MEMBER RECOGNITION

Darrick Price conducted member recognition.

Edwina Castle will celebrate her birthday this Monday. She presented the club with a check for $75.00 to cover her birthday, her anniversary, and for having her name in the paper.

Kelly Odegaard celebrated his birthday with a mountain bike trip.

Kelly McGraw celebrated her birthday by writing a check for 28 dollars to the club.

Ken Dunn and his wife have been married 32 years.

Abe Hanson and his wife have been married 6 years.

Richard and Donna Weed have been married 27 “happy” years.

Teresa Smith says time flies-- she’s been married to her very best friend for 32 years and it’s “way better now” than when they started.

BRAGS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

LV Van Blaricom asked the club members to please be generous and support Operation Backpack—donations are running a bit thin. You don’t have to shop—she’ll take a check!

Past President Chuck Pattishall said Cathy Carnahan (of Duniway Middle School and Oregon’s Principal of the Year) is in the running for the National Principal of the Year. She just returned from Washington, D.C. , where she was interviewed.

President Elect Maryalice Russell asked the club to feed the polio pigs and while that was happening, she asked Kristi Brill to give some highlights from this month’s The Rotarian magazine.

Kristi talked about an article on an eyeglass data bank, where donated eyewear is matched up with needy recipients, an article about overcoming discrimination against people with disabilities in Nepal, and an awareness campaign against methamphetamines in New Mexico schools. She reported that 46% of Rotary’s membership worldwide comes from three countries: the United States, Japan and India.

MAIN EVENT

President Elect Maryalice Russell introduced Kelly McGraw.

Kelly joined the club in February, and she’s been actively involved with the Uncorked fundraiser for the past three years.

Kelly was born in Connecticut, but moved frequently in her early years as her parents were transferred for their jobs within the federal corrections system.

She wound up in Oregon at age 8 and settled into life in McMinnville. She attended McMinnville High School and graduated from OSU—yes, she’s a Beavers fan!
Kelly majored in exercise and sports therapy but wasn’t quite sure what she wanted to do for a career. She volunteered with Special Olympics and enjoyed it tremendously. She found her passion in the non-profit world.

After graduation, Kelly took a job with the American Cancer Society, organizing Relay for Life events from Roseburg to Salem. She worked in both the Eugene and the Portland offices before deciding she wanted something a bit more local and hands-on.

When the Willamette Valley Cancer Foundation invited her for a visit, she met the staff and board and was impressed with the organization. And what could be more fabulous? It’s right here in McMinnville!

She’s been the Executive Director there for over three years now. Kelly says she does appreciate getting to spend time with patients and helping them transition through a difficult time in their lives.

In her free time, Kelly enjoys travelling. She and a friend backpacked and “hostelled” their way through Panama and Cost Rica. She is looking forward to the next trip.

A few things Kelly wanted the club to know: her family enjoys playing fiercely competitive card games together, Kelly likes to learn new things….and, she can recite the alphabet backward.

So, of course someone asked her to do it—and she did, lightening-fast, which showed she wasn’t bluffing!

CLOSING ANNOUNCEMENTS

After concluding her presentation, Kelly signed the book for the Early Readers’ Program and received her new blue badge from President-Elect Maryalice Russell.

Next week: Larry Wood and an update on the Evergreen water park.
