ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

McMinnville Rotary Meeting Summary

OPENING

President Jan Hartzell thanked the set up crew: Ken and Sandi Till, and Chemeketa College President Cheryl Roberts. She also thanked Nathan from Harvest Fresh Grocery and Deli for his wonderful service to the club. She recognized Jeanne de Reave and Pam Watts as greeters. Guy Everingham provided the inspirational moment and Colin Armstrong led the flag salute.

INTRODUCTION OF VISITING ROTARIANS AND GUESTS

Ray Fields introduced outbound exchange student MELANIE PURVIS and her mother, JULIE PURVIS.

Ray then introduced outbound exchange candidate MADDY ANCONA.

>

Bob Emrick introduced CHERYL ROBERTS, President of Chemeketa College.

Ken Till introduced SANDI TILL, his wife of 52 years. SANDI took a moment to describe her project to the club. She is collecting pillowcases to make dresses for girls in Uganda.

Erin Stephenson introduced outbound candidate MIRIAM PETERSEN, daughter of Jeff Petersen.

MEMBER RECOGNITION

President Jan complimented Darrick on his stellar performance at her goodbye dinner last week. Darrick then began recognizing both Ezra Koch turned 90 this past week and Tom Tankersley also had a birthday—neither were available for photos.

Wayne Bailey said he’s happy to be alive to celebrate a birthday.

Chuck Pattishall echoed that sentiment and made a donation to the club.

LV and Ray Van Blaricom are celebrating eight years of marriage. LV says the best thing about Ray is that he has “absolutely no short-term memory.”

Ginger and Gary Eastlund are celebrating 4 years of marriage and Ginger made a donation in hopes of 20 more years.

Bob and Nancy Emrick have been married 38 years.

BRAGS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Wayne Bailey bragged about the nice article on Willamette Valley wineries in the Sunday Oregonian Travel section and he also announced that retiring postmaster and club member Jess Davis will be joining the Youngberg Hills Estate team in a more official capacity next month.

Lee Vasquez said the Carlton Walk in the Park event is happening July 31st-August 1st. The event needs volunteers so please let Lee know if you are available.

Phil Hutchinson announced that “Carnival Daze” is happening this weekend out at the fairgrounds.

After member recognition, President Jan asked Uncorked event Chair Jeff Sargent to give an update on the event status. 2 more weeks until the big event! Jeff reported that we now have sponsorship of over $50,000.

Event Volunteer Coordinator Kelly Odegaard asked for event volunteers—there are still jobs that need doing and slots to be filled.

President Jan asked everyone to “Feed the Pig” for Polio Eradication and then she introduced Kristi Brill to update us on the highlights from the current “The Rotarian” magazine.

MAIN EVENT

Outbound Student MELANIE PUVIS gave the club a preview of what she might present when she reaches the Rotary Club meeting in Japan. She’ll be going to a city near Kyoto. MELANIE has been studying Japanese since she found out she’ll be going there for her exchange. It has been a lifelong dream to visit Japan so she is thrilled with her posting. MELANIE enjoys martial arts and gardening, hanging out with her friends and her life as a Grizzly at McMinnville High School. She’s made a lot of friends in the Rotary exchange program and became very close to Coni and Aof in their time with the club. MELANIE is leaving August 26 and will have a going-away party before she takes off.

CLOSING ANNOUNCEMENTS

President Jan said she'll make a final financial report form her term in office once the figures are In—sometime in the next few weeks. Not too late to squeeze in a donation this year, if you’re so inclined! The new sound system should be here next week-just in time for incoming President Bruce Dickson! Jan spoke about her year as Rotary president. She had some extra challenges—her sister was ill during the course of the year and her mother needed to be placed in a rest home. She thanked Incoming President Bruce Dickson for subbing at the conference in England, which gave her some extra time with her sister. President Jan presented two awards and said she has more coming. First was the resurrected Rose Sale Trophy which went to Van Keck for his record rose sales this year.

Next was the Rotarian of the Year Award, which she presented to Lee Vasquez. Jan said she couldn’t have been successful without help from many people, but she especially valued the assistance Lee provided.

President Jan thanked her board and committee chairs for their service this year. And she gave a special thanks to Bob Emrick for being a flexible employer and allowing her the time to accomplish her “Presidential Duties.” President Jan had the board come up to the front and presented them with Japanese-themed presents, in honor of MELANIE.

Jan’s final act as President was to surrender that office to Bruce Dickson.  Upon assuming the Presidency, Bruce opened by thanking Jan for serving the previous year, and she was given a lengthy standing ovation by the entire assembly of members and guests. President Bruce added that the remaining vacancies on his Board have been filled.  Maryalice Russell will be president-elect, Lee Means will be Vice-President, and Phil Hutchinson will be in charge of Community Service.  Bruce then adjourned the meeting at 1:25.
