ROTARY CLUB OF McMINNVILLE FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS

Guy Everingham presented the recipients of the 2010 Rotary Scholarships.

After the presentations, President Jan asked the assemled to stand and give the scholarship recipients proper recognition for their achievements.

Sarah Chiovaro –of Yamhill Carlton High School . A $1,000 Foundation Scholarship

When Sarah entered her freshman year at Yamhill Carlton High School, one of her goals was to be her graduating class’ valedictorian. She attained that goal at last Sunday’s graduation. Throughout high school Sarah held various leadership roles in numerous clubs and organizations. She was active in track, Orchestra, the YC Playmakers, pep band and cross country. She was recognized for outstanding academic achievement throughout her high school career and was a member of the National Honor Society since her sophomore year. She volunteered with Carlton Together Cares, the McMinnville Outreach Program, Blanchet House, the Portland Rescue Mission, Meals on Wheels and assisted flood victims in Vernonia. In 10 years Sarah plans on being an educator working with children who need and deserve a strong roll model. She wants to attend University of Oregon and major in Education.

Devin Staebler – of Yamhill Carlton High School recipient of the $500 "Service Above Self” Scholarship

In April 2007 Devin was diagnosed with a genetic disorder that causes non cancerous tumors to grow around the spine.  As a young man who lived for sports, the reality of never being able to play again would have been a difficult thing to face. Since the diagnosis he has endured 5 surgeries to remove these tumors and associated physical therapy. After each surgery Devin would have to work hard and put forth the extra effort to get caught up with his classes, which he did again, and again, and again.  He continued to be a part of the high school football team in a coaching capacity and was awarded with the “Players Coach Award” in his sophomore year. In his senior year he was nominated for the national “Rudy” award.  Devin has been a Beaver his whole life and his dream is to attend Oregon State University and then come back to Yamhill Carlton High School as a football coach. So his major will be Sports Management

Corina Upshaw – of Amity High Schoo. Al $1,000 Foundation Scholarship

Corina is moving from the family farm to the city. She will be the first in her immediate family to go to college, and she takes this responsibility very seriously. She has strived hard to maintain her grades at a high level, yet still have time to give back to the community. In addition to a full volunteer and sports schedule at Amity High School, Corina volunteered with FFA food drives, the Daffodil Festival, Doernbecher fundraising, Reach the Beach and Red Cross blood drives. Although her major is undecided, she is thrilled to go to a university that offers over 60 majors to explore. She will attend Seattle Pacific University.

MAIN EVENT

Our own Darrick Price returned to the podium to give a presentation on the Yamhill County Development Corporation.   The YCDC is a private non-profit organization that is dedicated to building new homes for qualified candidates who fall within a specified income range.  One of the requirements for candidates is that they provide an average of 35 hours of “sweat equity” per week as part of the process.  YCDC has been in existence for 20 years, and Darrick noted that current Board Members include John Larsen, Teresa Smith, and Maureen Chapman from our club, along with Dudley Frost from the Morning Rotary Club.

Darrick spoke of an incident that typifies the success of the YCDC program.  Recently, he received a phone call from an associate regarding one of the YCDC candidates (named Kathy).  Kathy was apparently on the front porch of a house she and her family hoped to buy in Carlton, sobbing uncontrollably.  Thinking the worst, Darrick immediately hopped in the car and headed for Carlton to see what the problem was.  Upon arriving, he saw that Kathy was still on the porch crying.  To his surprise, he discovered that there was no real problem at all, but that Kathy was crying for joy at having successfully purchased a home through the YCDC program.  She didn’t think that she would ever have the opportunity to experience the joy of buying her own home, and was simply overcome by the emotional impact of her success at doing so.  This, to Darrick, was a perfect example of what it’s all about with YCDC and similar programs.

Darrick closed the presentation by announcing that YCDC is in the process of building 9 homes in Gervais, and purchasing 43 lots in nearby Lafayette.  He is hopeful that the next 20 years will be as fruitful as the first 20 years, and thanked the Club for allowing him the opportunity to talk about the program.

CLOSING

Following Darrick’s presentation, President Jan presented him a pen and had him sign a book for the Early Reader Program, She closed the meeting by thanking Lee Vasquez, Waldo Farnham, Carol Benedict, and Patrick Fuchs for their efforts at supplying a new sound system for the club.
