ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

Past President Dan Gardiner bragged about his new grandson, Tyler, born 5-5-10, and about his youngest son, who will be graduated from WOU next Friday.

Edwina Castle invited the club members to attend one of her ballet company’s three performances of “Giselle” at Gallery Theater this weekend.

Jeff Peterson said his daughter Hana is leaving soon for Guatemala and the village where she’ll be living and working has recently been devastated by tropical storms. He said it makes us all even more aware of how important relief work is in underdeveloped countries.

Lee Means invited the club members to an Open House at her place Sunday, June 13th from 4:00-6:00 pm, to bid farewell to CONI and AOF, who are leaving the following week for their respective countries. E-vites will follow soon.

PP Chuck also spilled the beans a bit on President Jan’s Farewell Dinner, scheduled for Friday, June 18th. The theme is “1940’s Hawaiian” so start planning your outfit NOW! He needs RSVP’s as soon as possible.

Ken Till asked club members to donate good quality pillowcases for his wife Sandy and her fellow Quilting Guild members to make into dresses for little girls in underdeveloped countries.

Darrick Price gave a short report on his trip to China and concluded with some jokes, translated from the Chinese. The humor escaped most of the members.

A LITTLE CLUB HISTORY AND THE ROTARIAN MAGAZINE

Kristi Brill said the club has recently been given the original club charter, dating from May 1, 1921. It was in the personal effects of former Club member Milt Robins, who served in various capacities over the years. You can read about Milt by downloading the club's history book. President Jan would like members to email her suggestions of how best to showcase this treasure. (Editor's note - What is particularly interesting is the club was chartered in 1921, the year that Estes Snedecor, a member of the Rotary Club of Portland, was President of what was then known as the International Association of Rotary Clubs and is now known as Rotary International. PRIP Snedecor was the first RI President to preside over the first convention held outside of North America. You can read more about PRIP Snedecor at http://www.rotaryfirst100.org/presidents/1920snedecor/index.htm. You can also see a larger image of our club's charter click here or by clicking on the pictureat the right.)

This month’s issue features a nice letter from the outgoing President, talking about his recent trip to Asia. Rotary International is active in Thailand, Indonesia and China. The magazine has info about the upcoming convention in Montreal, which President Jan will be attending and a great article about the rise and fall of polio worldwide. Rotarians have contributed over $900 million to its eradication.

MAIN EVENT

President Jan introduced Scholarship Committee Chair Guy Everingham and he introduced his Scholarship Committee:Erin Stephenson, Jim Walker and Bob Mason, and the indispensible Steve Fitzpatrick and Carole Benedict, who work their magic with the finances.

There were 39 applications this year and 16 awarded. Scholarships are awarded on the basis of financial need, personal character, community service and sincere intentions—grades are among the last things considered. The committee wants to help students achieve their dreams. $1000.00 Scholarships were awarded to the following:

Erica Anderson, McMinnville High School. Erica will go to Eastern Oregon University with the intention of becoming a vet and operating a ranch for kids to learn about animals.

Emily Chupp, Dayton High School. Emily will attend OSU in the fall and study Engineering.

Colt Davidson, McMinnville High School. He’s been an Outdoor School counselor and he’s headed to the University of Montana in the fall.

Vania Flores, McMinnville High School. Vania will study Education as OSU—she’s going to be a kindergarten teacher.

Camilla Gutierrez, McMinnville High School. She plans to attend Chemeketa with the eventual goal of earning master’s degree in Environmental Design.

Elyse Lipke, McMinnville High School. Her immigrant family inspired her to attend college and she will major in Secondary education at the University of Montana.

Daniel Palacios, McMinnville High School. He was awarded the Cy Jeter Music Scholarship for his interest in music, voice and drama. He will begin at Chemeketa and work toward his goal of becoming a pediatrician at Doernbecher Hospital.

Micah Bristow, McMinnville High School, won the “Rotary Service Above Self” award of $500.00. He will study Education at George Fox University.

Mike Kirsch presented the Dan Ecker Memorial Scholarship, “For the Love of the Game.” Mike was a college roommate and teammate of Dan Ecker, son of club member Richard Ecker and his wife, Maggie. Their son Aaron was present with his mother Maggie as the award was presented to McMinnville High School senior Michael Burke.

At the conclusion of the awards ceremony, President Jan Hartzell asked the club to stand and applaud the hard work and dedication of these 2010 scholarship recipients.

CLOSING

Jeff Sargent, Uncorked Chair, gave a brief status update on the Uncorked celebration, which is coming up quickly! He said the event is moving “full speed ahead” and reminded the club members to bring a bottle of good quality Yamhill County Pinot Noir to the next meeting, June 11th.

Jeff still needs a couple of computer-savvy volunteers to help with check-out at the event and some more club members willing to volunteer the night of the event—please see Kelly Odegaard if you are available for duty. He said that club members wishing to purchase tickets for the events should hit the website soon as sales are brisk! (And he complained that the sporadic round of applause he received for his update was worse even than Darrick’s!)

Brandon Malloy, Uncorked Wine Procurement committee chair, asked again for the members to bring their wine donation, as it helps round out the packages for auction.

President Jan Hartzell gave a big thanks to the members for selling roses. Another successful sale is concluded—thanks to Lynda Phillippi for chairing the fundraiser.

Next week’s program: Darrick Price celebrates YCDC’s 20 years of community commitment to affordable housing in Yamhill County.

And, the scholarship recipients of Amity and Yamhill-Carlton High Schools will receive their awards from the Scholarship Committee.
