"UNCORKED" WINE AND ART AUCTION

Jeff Sargent gave a report on the upcoming Uncorked fundraising event—6 weeks to go! Tickets are on sale on the website. He still needs computer operators for a smooth check-out after the event. He reminded the club members to bring a bottle of Yamhill County Pinot Noir to one of the next two meetings.

Jeff thanked Waldo Farnham for electrical support and Sheriff Jack Crabtree for set-up and tear-down support for the Uncorked fundraiser. He thanked Past President Lee Vasquez for getting the News-Register on board as a returning sponsor and he thanked Jill Methven for getting Newberg Ford and Hazenberg Dairy as new sponsors of the event.

STUDENTS OF THE MONTH

McMinnville High School Principal Kris Olsen introduced his students of the month, KERRI SHORT and KELSIE BURDICK. You can read the detail of his presentation below.

MAIN EVENT

Richard Weed
said inbound exchange student AOF SOMBATPIRON came to this country knowing almost no English. Clearly, he’s made great strides in the past year.

AOF presented an overview of Thailand for the club. There are 62 million people in Thailand and 12 million of them live in Bangkok. In Thai, Bangkok’s name means “City of Angels.” The official name of Thailand is the longest country name in the world. Their government is a democracy similar to England’s, with a Prime Minister as the head of government. They have a king. Thailand is 95% Buddhist and the remaining 5% is a mixed bag of religions. The symbol of Thailand is the elephant.

AOF said that in Thailand the food is generally spicier than the Thai food he’s eaten here. He showed a picture of a river swarming with biting fish. When AOF returns to Thailand, he will continue his studies, with the goal of becoming a veterinarian. He has enjoyed his time in this country and is looking forward to seeing his family.

At the conclusion of his presentation, Past President Lee asked AOF to sign a book for the Early Readers program.

CLOSING

Waldo Farnham reported that the club will have a new sound system by the end of June. His committee has been hard at work and soon we’ll all be able to hear each other in meetings without that weird whine. He thanked his fellow committee members Past President Lee, Carole Benedict and Patrick Fuchs. AOF then presented his sponsoring club's banner to Past President Lee

STUDENTS OF THE MONTH DETAIL

President Jan Hartzell and fellow Rotarians, it’s my pleasure to introduce to you one of McMinnville High School’s students-of-the-month for May 2010, senior Kerri Short, representing Mathematics.

Kerri is the daughter of Anne Britt and Kraig Short.  She has two younger siblings, Mason 12 (Duniway) and Kristin (10th – MHS), and an older brother, Ryan 19 (student at BYU).

Kerri began elementary school in Hillsboro before moving with her family to McMinnville.  She then attended Memorial Elementary and Patton Middle School before enrolling at McMinnville High School in her freshman year.

Kerri currently holds a 4.00 grade point average and is ranked 1st in her class of 378 seniors, has been on honor roll each semester through her senior year, and will graduate in June with the Honors Diploma and as a valedictorian of her class. This semester she is currently enrolled in Aerobics, Advanced Placement Literature and Composition, Advanced Placement Biology, French IV, Advanced Placement Calculus, Ceramics, and Seminary.

I addition to her many academic accomplishments, Kerri has been a very active student while attending MHS.  She is a four year member of the women’s tennis program, is a member of the National Honor Society, is a Key Club member, has been the Blood Drive Chair, Relay for Life co-captain, and Link Crew mentor.

Outside of school, she has been employed by Yamhill County Accounting since 2006, is active in her church - youth leadership, youth group, summer youth camp, and many service projects.

Her future plans include attending Brigham Young University where she plans to study Physiology and Developmental Biology.  Kerri hopes to enter their field of medicine.

Her fondest memory of high school, chairing the annual blood drives at MHS in support of the American Red Cross, and observing live surgeries in Anatomy & Physiology as part of her Health Service Pathway experience.

President Jan Hartzell and fellow Rotarians, it’s my pleasure to introduce to you one of McMinnville High School’s students-of-the-month for May 2010, senior Kelsie Burdick, representing Science.

Kelsie is the daughter of Michael and Mindi Burdick.  She has an older brother, Jordan – 20.

Kelsie began her elementary school career in North Bend before moving to McMinnville with her family in 4th grade.  She attended Columbus Elementary and Duniway Middle School before enrolling at McMinnville High School in her freshman year.

Kelsie currently holds a 3.57 grade point average, has been on honor roll throughout her entire time at MHS, and will graduate in June having completed the requirements of the Pathway Endorsement in Health Services. This semester she is currently enrolled in Aerobics, College Writing, Advanced Wellness, Advanced Placement Biology, and is an aide in the Science Department.

I addition to her many academic accomplishments, Kelsie has been active as a cheerleader.

Outside of school, she works at Roth’s Fresh Market, enjoys reading, watching movies, spending time with friends and family, knitting, and listening to music.

Her future plans include attending Linfield College where she plans to study Nursing.  Kelsie too plans to enter the field of medicine!

Her fondest memory of high school, prom with her many friends.  Worst memory, freshman year.

I know that I am comforted knowing that these two young ladies may be looking after me in my aging years!  Who knows, one might be my doctor, the other my nurse.
