MAIN EVENT |
Tom Hellie took the podium to introduce the featured speaker, new member Jeff Peterson. Tom gave a brief summary of Jeff’s experience and background. He received his B.S. from Washington State, and went on to earn his Masters and Doctorate Degrees at the University of Texas in Austin. Now a professor at Linfield College, Jeff presides over the Linfield Center for Northwest Studies, and has spent extensive time in Mexico and Guatemala as a consultant for habitat enhancement and improvement projects.
Jeff began his talk by referring to Linfield College as a “point of intersection” for students. One of the principle tenets of his curriculum is to get students involved outside the geographic and social limits of the college campus. While working in the community, in the region, or even abroad, students are encouraged to develop and establish long-term experiential learning practices that will ultimately benefit them once they have completed their college lives. Jeff shared his experiences in Guatemala as part of the Habitat For Humanity Program as a good example of the “point of intersection” that can and does occur between students and the indigenous peoples of other cultures.
Jeff cited internships (e.g. Kemper and First Federal) and Foundations (e.g. Keck and Erath) as tools made available to students that promote and foster opportunities to work outside the limiting boundaries of the college campus. A chief goal is to focus on fostering connections outside of the campus environment, rather than relying upon Linfield as a “destination point” for students. Following his presentation, Jeff fielded questions from the membership.
