Bruce Dickson reminded the club about the Visioning Session next Thursday the 13th, 4:50-9:00 pm at the Villas in McMinnville.

Past President Chuck Pattishall bragged about his daughter EMMA being inducted into the National Honor Society. He also reminded us of the “Goodbye Celebration” to honor Jan Hartzell’s term as Rotary Club President will be held on June 18th.

Bob Emrick as he was headed out to pick up wine for the Uncorked event asked members who are interested in participating in a visioning process related to the future of the Wine and Art Auction to please contact him.

Finally, Darrick asked everyone to please contribute to Pennies for Polio. He had a great trivia question, and most people guessed the answer correctly—but still made a contribution.

Uncorked: Jeff Sargent made the happy announcement that we have 3 new silver level patrons. He encouraged the members to think of creative and unique experiences to present at auction and to please let Jeff or Brandon Malloy know if you think of something.

Jeff then asked Beth Faylor and Ginger Eatlund to talk about the patron party they’re planning for silver-level and above patrons. It will be quite a lovely event with a special auction package just for them. The two ladies encouraged those who wish to become sponsors and participate in the party to let them know!

President Jan introduced Guy Everingham of the Foundation Board. Three board members’ terms have expired: John Larsen, Steve Larson and Richard Weed. Each of these men has expressed a desire for another term and the board will vote next week.

MAIN EVENT

President Jan introduced the Superintendent of the McMinnville School District, Dr. Maryalice Russell. Maryalice introduced each of the Principals, who in turn introduced their school’s Teacher of the Year.

STEPHANIE LEGARD is the principal of Sue Buel Elementary School. Her Teacher of the Year is NANCY HART, a Title One reading specialist. NANCY’S joy is helping kids learn to read.

KATHI FOWLER is the principal of Columbus Elementary School. Her Teacher of the Year is AMY FAST. AMY says we need to consider the impact of ‘labeling’ kids as they will achieve at the level of expectations.

DR. DEBORAH WEINER is the Principal of Memorial Elementary School. Her Teacher of the Year is KORI BURTON. KORI says teachers must multitask and so she wrote a poem while her kids were doing a poetry unit last week.

MARIA DRENNEN filled in for Patton Middle School Principal Marty Palacios. Patton’s Teacher of the Year is new father MICHAEL FISHER. Michael is a math guy so he gave us some statistics.

Dr. Kris Olsen, Principal of McMinnville High School introduced his Teacher of the Year, retiring counselor LAN CARPENTER.  LAN spoke of her years as a counselor and showed photos of some of the students she’s helped over the years

Every one of the educators spoke about their love of teaching and their love of the students and their belief that kids have unlimited potential and it’s our job to help them reach it. They each put their own spin on it, but they had a consistent message: that teaching  is hard work, but very rewarding. It was a wonderful and very moving program.

At the conclusion, President Jan  asked Maryalice to sign a book for the Early Readers’ program.

CLOSING

Next week’s program is Jeff Peterson’s presentation, ”Forget the Box.” Linfield College as a point of intersection.
