McMinnville Rotary Meeting Summary

OPENING

Greeters:  Auf Sombatpiron, Art Bradley, Edwina Castle (not pictured). President Jan Hartzell called the meeting to order. Darrick Price provided a brief and simple prayer of thanks during the Inspirational Moment. The Pledge of Allegiance was then led by Maryalice Russell.

INTRODUCTION OF VISITING ROTARIANS AND GUESTS

Kris Olsen introduced LEESA NOVAK, mother of one of the current Students-of-the-Month (more on that below)

Walter Haight welcomed TOM VAIL, a visiting Rotarian and frequent guest from the McMinnville Sunrise Clan.

Edwina Castle introduced CONY ANDREA CAMPBELL, our current Inbound Student from Chile.

Pam Watts welcomed SAM PATTINSON, a former Rotary Inbound Exchange Student, and his friend COEY STELLFLUG, along with AOF SOMBATPIRON, our current Inbound Student from Thailand.

MEMBER RECOGNITION

Darrick Price took the podium to administer the Member Recognition portion of the meeting, and kicked things off by making the case that some of his jokes were, in fact, funny.

Wayne Bailey was recognized for his 12th wedding anniversary to his wife, Nicolette.

Norm Goss happily announced his 396th “Month-iversary” to his bride, Phyllis.  This equated, of course, to 33 years, but Norm insisted that 396 was a much more impressive number.

BRAGS AND ANNOUNCEMENT

Teresa Smith announced that the annual flower basket sale was approaching, with the proceeds to benefit the American Cancer Society.

Carol Benedict made a brief apology for a moment of misinformation she had provided earlier.  She was unanimously forgiven.

Paul Elias took it upon himself to pay Erin Stephenson’s “fine” for having her picture appear in the News Register.  Nice going, Paul!

Bob Emrick shared his recent experiences at a “self-challenging workshop” in Calistoga, California, citing it as seven unforgettable days.

Chuck Pattishall announced that a “Goodbye Celebration” to honor Jan Hartzell’s term as Rotary Club President will be held on June 18th.  Details forthcoming.

Bruce Dickson reminded the membership that a Vision Facilitation Event, designed to explore how the needs of our club could be better met, will be held on May 13th.

Walt Haight announced that the Pacesetter Committee is looking for an additional photographer to join that prestigious group.

Darrick closed the Brags & Announcements portion of the meeting, returning to form by intoning several lame jokes that didn’t disappoint.

Kris Olsen presented the current Students-of-the-Month at McMinnville High School, NAVNEET KAUR and HALEIGH NOVAK.

See detail below

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

Jeff Sargent, Chair of the 2010 Wine & Art Auction (“Uncorked!”) provided a brief update on the planning of this big event, reminding the membership that it is only ten weeks away.  Bob Emrick and  Kelly McGraw then took the microphone to exhort members to develop ideas for auction items that would be attractive to our patrons.

MAIN EVENT

Erin Stephenson introduced CONI ANDREA CAMPBELL, who gave her “Vocational Talk” to the membership.  Erin cited CONY’S amazing grasp of English, attained in just the few short months that she has been in McMinnville, and lauded her tremendously cheerful and upbeat attitude about anything and everything.

CONI then took the podium, and opened her presentation by showing a picture of the Chilean flag, and describing what each of the colors (red, white, and blue) symbolized.  The language of the country, she said, was Spanish, and the total population is over 16 million inhabitants.  Of that, 70% observe Roman Catholicism as their chosen religion.

In a wonderfully clear and concise manner, CONI described the basic geography of Chile, noting that it is 80% “mountainous”, but quite varied in its climatic regimes.  Surprisingly, the Pacific Ocean maintains a constant temperature of about 59 degrees (F) along most of the Chilean coastline.

Politically, the country is divided into 15 “Regions”, which are further sub-divided into 54 “Provinces”.  The “Provinces” are broken down into “communes”.  The currency of the country is the Peso, and the current exchange rate is 500 Pesos/Dollar.

CONI provided a variety of photos showing typical celebrations enjoyed by the populace, along with examples of the different foods and beverages that are common to Chileans  Her hometown, Copiaco, lies on the fringes of the Atacama Desert, a region known worldwide as one of the driest places on earth.  Although her region receives scant rainfall (12 mm.year), there is a well-established wine industry that covers the foothills of the Andes Mountains.  The principal industry in the area is mining.

Following her presentation, Lee Means took the opportunity to discuss her experience as host-mother for the past year.  Lee echoed Erin’s comments about how amazingly fast CONi has developed a fluent understanding of the English language.

CONI  then “took the stage” to entertain the membership with a Flamenco Dance.  Her performance earned loud and sustained applause.

CLOSING

Jan Hartzell then asked CONI to sign a book for the Early Reader’s Program at the McMinnville Library. Jan Hartzell then adjourned the meeting. Next Week will be Teacher Recognition.
