ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

McMinnville Rotary Meeting Summary

OPENING

Phil Hutchinson and Araceli Ortiz greeted warmly. President Jan welcomed all members and guests. She gave thanks to our greeters, and to Johannes Goddik for setting up. Bruce Wyatt offered the inspirational message for the day with the following story:

"Josh and Jeremy  Lovell, twin brothers, are senior scholar - athletes at Linfield College  Both compete in the decathlon.  Last year  Josh was the Division III national champion in the event, and brother Jeremy was the national runner up. Each of them scored over 7000 points in the NCAA championship decathlon last year.  At a recent track meet, the decathlon came down to the final event, the 1500 meters.  Josh needed to run a 4:42 to break the 18 year old decathlon record at Linfield.  As fate would have it, brother Jeremy  needed to run a 4:42 to score enough points to meet the minimum assured qualifying standard to compete later this season in the national event."

"Jeremy, recognizing the significance of the possibility that Josh could set a new school record told his brother that he, Jeremy, would break out early and allow Josh to "draft" behind him for as long as possible.  Jeremy  said "I  will keep up the pace and break the wind as long as I can; when you sense that I am beginning to falter, pass me and make sure you set the record. Jeremy led his brother through the first three and a half laps.  As is often  the case in the close-knit track community,  every fan, athlete and coach - whatever their school affiliation--was aware of the stakes for both brothers.  The small crowd in the stadium stood for the duration of the event.  Both teams playing in a conference tennis match adjacent to the track, took a brief  spell in their match so that all those athletes could watch the action and root the Lovells on."

"Both brothers ran 4:42. Pretty inspirational!"

Paul Elias led the club in the flag salute.

Molly Walker beamed that grandchild #7 will be a boy, and is due in August.

President-Elect Bruce reminded the club that: 1) the District Assembly will be held April 17th in Washougal – all are invited, 2) we should complete the survey emailed to all members, to help with club strategic planning, 3) the strategic planning facilitation will take place at The Villas of McMinnville on May 13th, starting at 5:00 p.m., and 4) we owe thanks to Steve Larson for repairing the Rotary signs on 99W that went down recently. Thanks, Steve!

JAN WINDER of the Newberg noon club invited members to their annual auction and fundraiser, which will be held April 17th at the Newberg Armory. Tickets are only $35, and the event includes dinner and a silent auction. The theme is “The Roaring 20's.”

Darrick Price returned to close out the segment with a Woman's Suffrage quiz. Unfortunately for him, the correct answer got leaked and only $4 was raised for the pot.

President Jan reminded members about the Fireside on April 22nd. This will replace the regular club meeting on the 23rd. If you plan to attend, please sign up so we'll know how many to expect. She also showed off a sample of stylish new canvas shopping bags that the club will introduce soon. Thanks to Jack Price for initiating the idea and Paul Elias and McMinnville Water and Light for funding them.

Past President Chuck took the stage to welcome new member GINGER EASTLUND. He  explained how GINGER sincerely represents all of our Rotarian values, especially with her tireless work on the Wine and Art Auction. She received her badge, traditional Four Way Test, lapel pin and History of the McMinnville Rotary Club door stop/book.

President Jan added that thanks to Ray Fields, the club history book is available online from the club website as a PDF.

MAIN EVENT

Elise Hui introduced our speaker for the day, AmeriCorps volunteer and Yamhill Community Action Partnership (YCAP) staff member AMY BURTON.

AMY described some of the recent work she has done at YCAP on homeless issues. This includes the state-mandated annual count of the number of homeless people in the county, which was conducted in the winter. This past year's count used new methods, which were considered more accurate. The total number logged was 961, an increase over the previous year.

Several questions to AMY were posed, including one about the breakdown of the homeless population in the county and their situation. She said that the most recent survey revealed 119 single males, 76 single females and 159 single parent families. This includes people living in tents, cars, shelters, transitional housing, using vouchers for motels or living in RVs/campers with no running water hook-up. In terms of prioritizing who gets into a YCAP shelter, they only house single women and parents with children. Many homeless are in their situation now due to job loss and/or home foreclosure.

The count is done by sending teams of volunteer into the community, going to places where the homeless are known to congregate. The Sheriff's Office helped with identifying these sites. There was also a phone hotline and drop-in sites where the homeless could report in.

The survey included questions about how long individuals have been homeless, whether they suffer from mental illness, and a variety of other details. Linfield College is still compiling the data, so additional information should be available in about a month. Some counties have yet to complete their count, so a statewide comparative is still forthcoming. The Yamhill County count total and a location map was submitted to the U.S. Census Bureau, so that they could follow up as well.

Their next big event for YCAP's homeless support program is “Community Connect,” which will take place on April 14th from 2 – 8 p.m. This annual fair was held for the first time last year, and it offers a broad range of services for people who are homeless or at risk. This includes social services; county Public Health (with H1N1 shots and pregnancy screening); dental, hearing and vision check-ups; bike repair; job search and resume writing; and information from prevention programs and Chemeketa College's GED program, among others. Many homeless also don't have a valid ID, which limits their ability to get a job or access to many services. The event will help them get started and guide them through the process. Dinner will also be provided, and child care and a pet station will be available. Volunteers are still needed to work the event, so if you are interested please contact YCAP.

CLOSING

President Jan asked AMY to sign the traditional Early Reader Program book and gave her the pen. She closed by thanking Carole Benedict for taking over as club Treasurer. Next week's program welcomes Juliette's House, to present the latest on their fight against child abuse.
