McMinnville Rotary Meeting Summary

OPENING

President Jan Hartzell was off today. President-Elect Dr. Bruce Dickson filled in admirably. Greeters today were Elise Hui and Kelly McGraw. The inspirational moment: was provided by Bruce Huffman. The flag salute was led by Al Owen.

MAIN EVENT ROTARY 4 WAY TEST SPEECH CONTEST

Without further ado, President-Elect Bruce asked Ray Fields to come up and introduce the Rotary 4-Way Test Speech Competition so the judges would have time to tabulate the results by meeting’s end. He passed out score sheets and pens and we were underway.

#1 The first contestant spoke about running away from her brother at the pool and the consequences she faced as a result.

#2 This contestant spoke about her fundraising challenges and the trip she took.

#3 This story pitted “the little nature lovers” against the beleaguered lady park ranger.

#4  This contestant told the story of stamping her living room carpet and walls with Disney Princess pink ink.

After the speeches, the tabulators Carole Benedict and Marcia Baragary got to work tallying the scores and we proceeded with the meeting.

Also in the Ballroom: Thursday, April 22nd, there will be a Fireside for members and their guests, which will replace the regular meeting that week. Please rsvp to Brandon Malloy.

AUSTIN PALACIOS gave a report on Interact club events. There was a fundraising event Friday evening at Cornerstone. AUSTIN is representing the Interact Club in the Mr. Mac High Contest. The club’s latest efforts are raising money for both the Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and the Haiti relief fund.

President-Elect Bruce introduced Kris Olsen, who presented McMinnville High School’s Students of the Month. March focused on outstanding art students. The two students are Daniel Kiser, son of Dr. Craig and Beccy Kiser and Albert (Albee) Novetta, son of Celeste Novetta. Albee has agreed to donate a ceramic piece for the Uncorked fundraiser this summer. Read about these two students below.

President-Elect Bruce encouraged board members and club members to attend the District Assembly Saturday, April 17th at Washougal High School. The assembly is from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.

ROTARY 4 WAY TEST SPEECH CONTEST RESULTS

The three runners-up each receive a $50 U.S. Savings Bond and the winner, Ms. Dakota Buhler, receives a $100 dollars U.S. Savings bond. Maryalice Russell, McMinnville School District Superintendent and Ray Fields, Committee Chair, passed out awards to the four students. DAKOTA BUHLER, SOPHIA BISBOCCI, REBEKAH WOOD and CAYLEE STEVENSON all did an excellent job, displaying poise and sophistication in the speech competition. (It was a rough crowd, but they retained their composure.) Ms. BUHLER will participate in a district speech competition in May. After a flurry of “feeding the pigs” for polio, President-Elect Dr. Bruce  Dickson adjourned the meeting.
