was off today. President-Elect Dr.
Bruce Dickson filled in admirably.
Greeters today were Elise Hui and
Kelly McGraw. The inspirational
moment: was provided by Bruce
Huffman. The flag salute was led by
Al Owen.

MAIN EVENT ROTARY 4 WAY TEST
SPEECH CONTEST |

Without further ado, President-Elect
Bruce asked Ray Fields to
come up and introduce the Rotary 4-Way
Test Speech Competition so the judges
would have time to tabulate the results
by meeting’s end. He passed out score
sheets and pens and we were underway.

#1 The
first contestant spoke about running
away from her brother at the pool and
the consequences she faced as a result.
|

#2 This contestant spoke about her
fundraising challenges and the trip she
took.
|

#3 This story pitted “the little nature
lovers” against the beleaguered lady
park ranger.
|

#4 This contestant told the story of
stamping her living room carpet and
walls with Disney Princess pink ink.
|

After the speeches, the tabulators
Carole Benedict and Marcia
Baragary got to work tallying the
scores and we proceeded with the
meeting.

President Chuck Pattishall
asked the club to save the date of June
18th for President Jan
Hartzell’s Goodbye Celebration
(we’re not calling it a Demotion
Dinner.) It will be in the Ballroom.

Also in the Ballroom: Thursday, April 22nd,
there will be a Fireside for members and
their guests, which will replace the
regular meeting that week. Please rsvp
to Brandon Malloy.
|

AUSTIN
PALACIOS gave a report on Interact club
events. There was a fundraising event
Friday evening at Cornerstone. AUSTIN is
representing the Interact Club in the
Mr. Mac High Contest. The club’s latest
efforts are raising money for both the
Doernbecher Children’s Hospital and the
Haiti relief fund.

President-Elect Bruce
introduced Kris Olsen, who
presented McMinnville High School’s
Students of the Month. March focused on
outstanding art students. The two
students are Daniel Kiser, son of Dr.
Craig and Beccy Kiser and Albert (Albee)
Novetta, son of Celeste Novetta. Albee
has agreed to donate a ceramic piece for
the Uncorked fundraiser this summer.

President-Elect Bruce
encouraged board members and club
members to attend the District Assembly
Saturday, April 17th at
Washougal High School. The assembly is
from 9:00 am to 2:00 pm.

ROTARY 4
WAY TEST SPEECH CONTEST RESULTS |
 The
three runners-up each receive a $50 U.S.
Savings Bond and the winner, Ms. Dakota
Buhler, receives a $100 dollars U.S.
Savings bond.
Maryalice Russell, McMinnville School District Superintendent and Ray Fields,
Committee Chair, passed out awards to
the four students.
DAKOTA
BUHLER, SOPHIA BISBOCCI, REBEKAH WOOD
and CAYLEE STEVENSON all did an
excellent job, displaying poise and
sophistication in the speech
competition. (It was a rough crowd, but
they retained their composure.) Ms.
BUHLER will participate in a district
speech competition in May. After a
flurry of “feeding the pigs” for polio,
President-Elect Dr. Bruce
Dickson adjourned the meeting.

STUDENTS OF THE MONTH. |
Fellow
Rotarians, it's my pleasure to introduce
to you one of McMinnville High School's
student-of-the-month for March, senior
Daniel Kiser, representing Performing
Arts.
Daniel is
the son of Craig and Rebecca Kiser. He
has four older siblings, Nathan (30),
Kristin (28), Rachel (26), and Roseanne
(24).
Daniel
attended Memorial Elementary and then
Patton Middle School before enrolling at
McMinnville High School in his freshman
year.
Daniel
currently holds a 4.0 grade point
average and is ranked 1st in
his class of 378 seniors, has been on
honor roll each semester throughout his
high school career, will graduate this
June with the Honors Diploma, and will
be recognized as a valedictorian in his
class. This semester, he is enrolled in
Yearbook, French IV, The Bruin, Advanced
Placement Calculus, Advanced Placement
English, Symphonic Choir, and has a
release period for Seminary.
While in
high school, Daniel has been active in
our school's performing arts program for
all four years, with performances in the
Curious Savage, Guys and Dolls, The
Diary of Anne Frank, Our Town,
Footloose, Black Comedy, You Can't Take
it With You, Romeo & Juliet, and Bye Bye
Birdie. He is the current Drama Club
President, International Club
Vice-President, National Honor Society
Treasurer, The Bruin Advertising
Manager, and member of the Relay for
Life Team, and Doernbecher Club.
Additionally, Daniel is an Eagle Scout,
was the 2009 Mr. MAC High pageant winner
in support of Doernbecher Children's
Hospital, and spent this past summer in
Fiji building flush toilets in rural
villages with Alliance for Youth
Services.
His future
plans include application to Brigham
Young University in Provo, Utah, where
he plans to major in Construction
management and Business Management. He'd
then like to earn a masters degree in
Architecture.

Fellow
Rotarians, it's my pleasure to introduce
to you one of McMinnville High School's
student-of-the-month for March, senior
Albert Navetta, representing Visual
Arts.
Albert is
the son of Celeste Navetta. He has two
older sisters, Amanda (24) and Alicia
(23).
Albert
attended Wascher Elementary and then
Patton Middle School before enrolling at
McMinnville High School in his freshman
year.
Albert
currently holds a 2.84 grade point
average, has been on honor roll several
semesters throughout his high school
career. This semester, he is enrolled in
Advanced Drawing, Introduction to
Education, The Bruin, Advanced Placement
Studio Art, Advanced Placement English,
Ceramics IV, and Advanced Placement
Psychology.
While in
high school, Albert has
been active in our school's visual arts
program for all four years with
interests in painting, drawing
(graphite), ceramics, and photography.
Additionally, Albert has been a member
of our school performing arts program,
appearing in the Diary of Anne Frank and
Our Town. He is the current Speech Team
captain, President of the GSA Club,
member of the Art and International
Club, is a state champion in speech,
attended the National Forensic League
National Tournament placing 1st
place in Humorous Interpretation.
His future
plans include application to Pacific
Northwest College of the Arts in
Portland, Oregon, where he plans to
major in Fine Arts.
When I
asked Albert about his goals for this
school year, he told me he needed to
expand his art portfolio, specifically
in the area of ceramics, which he has
done this school year.
