McMinnville Rotary Meeting Summary

OPENING

Richard Weed and Aof Sombatpiron were our happy greeters. President Jan welcomed all members and guests, and thanked the set-up team of Steve Battaglia, John Larsen, Ken Till, Ray Fields and Jeff Sargent for filling in while Johannes is on vacation. Eric Hanson offered the inspirational message for the day. Waldo Farnham led the club in the flag salute.

VISITING ROTARIANS AND GUESTS

Lynda Phillippi introduced ANNE FALLA, a staff member at Henderson House who is soon leaving for a 27 month tour of duty with the Peace Corps.

Al Hansen introduced his wife CAROLE HANSEN

Steve Fitzpatrick introduced TOM VAIL, visiting Rotarian from the morning club.

Erin Stephenson introduced our inbound exchange students, CONI CAMPBELL of Chile and AOF SOMBATPIRON from Thailand.

Pam Watts introduced our speaker for the day, BOB HAZELTON.

Bruce Wyatt introduced Linfield Sociology Professor and soon-to-be new club member JEFF PETERSON.

Norm Goss introduced a welcome but rare sighting; member Steve Macy

Bruce Huffman introduced soon-to-be new member MIKE TARON and his father RUDY.

President Jan welcomed back Bob Rhoads, who had been out on medical leave.

Edwina Castle introduced her sons ROBIN, who is currently attending Oregon State, and EHREN, who is at Mac High.

Ron Benek introduced his successor at Citizens Bank KEN DUNN.

MEMBER RECOGNITION - BRAGS & ANNOUNCEMENTS

John Larsen stood in for Darrick Price to get the ball rolling on member recognition.

Al Hansen acknowledged his birthday and agreed to contribute 34 cents per year.

Ken Till also has a birthday coming up.

Erin Stephenson will turn the ripe young age of 31 this Thursday, April 1. She's no fool!

Bob Mason thanked the club for supporting his grandson Max's candy sale last week.

Pam Watts announced that the Yamhill County Historical Society will hold a Farm Fest out at the museum site off of Highway 18 on April 10th. The event, which Pam and her husband have been instrumental in founding and organizing, raises funds to help the Society finish the museum building.

Dave Pfendler will make a donation for any member that has an alma mater with a team still in the NCAA Men's Basketball Tournament. Oh, there's only one, his school of Purdue! (Note: sadly, the Boilermakers fell to Duke later that evening).

President-Elect Bruce reminded members that they should have received a survey request via email recently. This is to help the club with strategic planning, so please share your opinions.

In honor of Darrick, John Larsen closed out Brags and Announcements with the groaner, “The Top Ten Reasons for Getting A Speeding Ticket.”

President Jan invited up Past President Chuck with the new member induction of MIKE TARON. He received his badge, traditional Four Way Test and History of the McMinnville Rotary Club. MIKE will soon go to SE Asia with his family on a working peace mission, and he is proud to be going now as a Rotarian.

President Jan then called up Ron Benek for special recognition. Ron has been the Club Treasurer for 10 years. He is soon retiring from this role, along with retiring from his job at Citizens Bank. As one of his hobbies is cooking, the club gave him a gift certificate for a day at the Cannon Beach Cooking School followed by dinner for he and his wife. Incoming Club Treasurer Carole Benedict presented him with a plaque thanking him for his service.

Al Hansen reminded everyone of the upcoming CASA Auction fundraiser, to be held April 30th at The Allison Inn and Spa. Tickets are $75 each, and the event supports the Yamhill County  chapter of  Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) for Children.

MAIN EVENT

BOB HAZELTON is a big football fan. He was even a referee at the college level. He and his wife also have two sons: one is now 31 years old, went to Oregon State in bio-physics, and is currently in New York in his fifth year at the Einstein School of Medicine.

Their younger son, however, got into trouble. He got involved in drugs, alcohol and criminal activity. He was sent to rehab for 26 months. As part of that treatment, the parents were also required to attend counseling. BOB got so involved in that program and the company providing it that he quit his engineering job and began working for them full-time, focusing on helping at- risk teens. He became devoted to the philosophy that “Behavior Follows Belief.”

He pointed out how kids without one of two adults who are supposed to care about them typically act out their loss in negative ways. At the same time, kids are typically very forgiving of dads who are not responsible. In addition, our entertainment culture (TV, movies) portrays dads mostly as dummies – as poor role models.

The experience in counseling and through the company he worked for motivated BOB to write his book, “Dads Matter.” The book is broken down into chapters, including ones focused on “Being There,” “Communication,” “Forgiveness,” and “Values.” The “Values” section includes the concept of “Service Above Self” and incorporates a form of the “Four Way Test”: integrity, respect, relationships and community.

Copies of the book are available on the back table, and BOB donates a portion of the proceeds of the sale to various charitable causes, including Rotary International. You can also find out more about the book at www.dadsmatter.com.

In conclusion, the younger son graduated from Oregon State last year, got married, and is now in nursing school. He turned his life around, while helping BOB change his as well.

CLOSING

President Jan asked BOB to sign a book for the Early Reader Program and as is tradition, gave him the pen. She also thanked the Pacesetter volunteers for their good work. Next week's program features the Rotary Four Way Test speech contest, and the meeting will be led by President-Elect Bruce. With that, the meeting was adjourned.
