Kris Olsen told the sad story of the Mac High girl’s basketball team. In the four years his daughter has been on the team, their record is 4-91. However, they were recognized by the OSAA for having the highest GPA of any girl’s basketball team in the state. Go Grizzlies!

Richard Weed thanked Guy Everingham and the News Register for the article about RICKY BODLE, our exchange student in Chile and the article about CONY CAMPBELL, our exchange student from Chile.

Lee Means talked about the wish list for YCAP’s upcoming Community Connect (formerly Homeless Connect.) It’s scheduled for Wednesday, April 14th at the New Horizon Church in McMinnville. It’s a county-wide event, designed to bring together all kinds of service providers to connect with homeless and at-risk people. YCAP is hoping for more dentists who are willing to come volunteer their services, alongside Legal Aid, Mental Health and other service providers. They also need people who can repair bicycles. If you can help, please contact Lee.

Randy McCreith spoke about his three years in this community. He started his real estate business just as the market crashed, yet over his three years here, the business has grown and prospered. In spite of the extra thirty pounds he’s gained and the financial losses he suffered, he’s alive and well and plans to be around for awhile.

Ray Fields gave a report on this week’s Rotary 4 Way Testspeech competition at Patton and Duniway middle schools. He asked all to be sure and attend the April 2nd meeting when the club will select this year's winner who wil go to the District Conference in May.

Bruce Dickson said he’s heard from about 25 people willing to participate, but he’d like some younger club members to participate. The visioning session is set for Thursday, May 13th at 5:00 pm—location to be announced.

Bob Emrick is organizing a committee to meet monthly and create a succession strategy for the Uncorked event. He says it’s time to look beyond the year to year management and strategize for the long haul. Please contact him at bemrick@wow.com if you’d like to be part of the committee.

President Jan announced a "Fireside" on Thursday April 22nd, right after work in the Ballroom. It will replace the regular Friday meeting on the 23rd and have an informal agenda so the members can spend more time visiting with each other. Please mark your calendar and plan to attend. Time to dig deep for Pennies for Polio! We were trying to make at least $20.00 today and we managed to give much more, all to avoid having Darrick read aloud Ray's "Groaners" from the last newsletter.

MAIN EVENT

Program: Beth Faylor’s Vocational Talk

You knew it would be wild and it was…Beth has lived quite an interesting life, filled with fun and adventure and celebrities.

She started her presentation with a video of her 2007 Lip-Synch during the Biggest Turkey Competition, as her character “Mustang Sally.” It featured Edwina Castle and Pam Watts singing and dancing alongside Beth.

Beth is the eldest of six children, brought up in a strict Catholic family. Her father was an Army Sergeant and later an exec with Coca-Cola. Her mother was a pom-pom girl in high school. When Beth was little, she won a “Little Miss Downey” competition and received Disney stock. When the family moved to Anaheim they had the only swimming pool in a cul-de-sac with 30 kids.

Beth took ice skating lessons from Peggy Fleming and her first job as a teenager was selling hats at Disneyland in The Mad Hatter gift store.

When her folks divorced, she spent summers with her dad in Hawaii, being a hippie and working as a cocktail waitress. She married her childhood sweetheart and began touring with an exotic dance company.

Beth had parts in the movies “The Rose” and “The Blues Brothers.” She watched Hawaii Five-O being shot on the streets of Oahu.

When she lived in Anaheim as an adult, she saw the young Tiger Woods playing golf at the nearby golf club. During this time, she studied karate for eight years and became a black belt.

She’s been married in Fiji and in Thailand and she’s been to Steve Irwin’s zoo. She’s won both a “Soiled Dove“ contest and the title of “Miss Chili Pepper” in addition to winning the People’s Choice award in a chili cook-off.

Beth has two grown daughters, both successful women raising families.

She thanks her friend Pam Watts, whom she met at a Chamber Greeters event, for welcoming her to McMinnville and getting her involved with all kinds of enjoyable activities and people.

Over the years, she’s had many interesting and wealthy husbands, but finally she found and married her best friend and soul mate, Scott Olsen. Leaving behind the glamorous life of ski trips to Breckenridge, palatial estates on the beach in California and golfing with Sean Connery, she and her husband have settled down in a 1937 bungalow in McMinnville. Beth works at the Brookdale Senior Living facility here in McMinnville, helping older adults transition into assisted living with the same humor and grace she’s brought to her other roles in life.

At the close of her presentation, Beth asked the audience members for their answers to the trivia questions she posed along the way. (She did warn everyone to take notes.) Lynda Phillippi won the grand prize, a gift certificate to Salishan Lodge.

The questions were:

What’s the name of the hat shop at Disneyland? The Mad Hatter

Who starred in the movie “The Blues Brothers”? Dan Ackroyd and John Belushi

What is the St. Andrew’s golf course in Scotland a part of? (Never did find out the answer to this one…)

Who is the African-American Beth saw playing golf in Anaheim? Tiger Woods

Who is “The Shark”? Greg Norman

What was the name of the horse? Smarty Jones

What do the 4 letters of “golf” stand for? Gentlemen only, ladies forbidden

Beth gave away several other prizes, which may be a first for a vocational talk!

At the close of her presentation, Beth signed a book for the Early Reader’s program and got to keep the Rotary pen. She also got a new blue badge to replace the red rookie badge she’s been wearing.

CLOSING

President Jan Hartzell announced next week’s program, “Dads Matter”, with Ron Hazelton and the meeting was adjourned.
