1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

MEMBER RECOGNITION - BRAGS & ANNOUNCEMENTS

Past President Chuck Pattishall conducted member recognition. he started with "Okay, here we go. Sit down and lift your right foot in front of you. Now, start rotating your leg clockwise…got it? Now, with your right hand, try drawing the number 6. What happened? If you are like most of us, it didn’t work. You can draw a 6 with your left hand, though!  Chuck wanted us to feel like Darrick was with us, if only in spirit! Here’s one of Chuck’s jokes in Darrick’s honor: Did you hear about the suicidal twin who killed her sister by mistake?

Ron Benek celebrated an important birthday last week but he wasn’t here, so he wrote a check today!

Jill and Allen Methven: celebrate 12 years of marriage.

Carole and Andy Benedict: celebrated 19 years of marriage.

Ray and Yasuko Fields celebrate 20 years of marriage, again they had two weddings, one here in February and one in Japan in March.

Bob Mason: Columbia’s School of the Arts was a winner at this year’s Academy Awards when alumna Kathryn Bigelow (SoA’81) and adjunct professor Geoffrey Fletcher received Oscars for director and adapted screenplay.

Dave Pfendler: Which Big 10 men’s basketball team has won the most championships? When I say Purdue, you say yay!

Jill Methven reported that their humanitarian trip to Guatemala and Antigua was a success again this year—it is great to see the villages rising above mere subsistence.

EHREN CASTLE announced that Mac High is hosting “New York Voices”, an award winning choral group, on Tuesday April 13th in the high school auditorium. To purchase tickets please email Dana Libonati at dlibonati@msd.k12.or.us

President Jan Hartzell asked Guy Everingham, Chair of the Foundation Board, to approach the podium and receive two checks. The first was from First Federal for $238, from their Community Rewards program. The second check was for $2,500 from the club’s general fund.

President Jan then announced that Bob Rhoads is once again in the hospital and she’ll try to get more info if members would like to send cards or keep in touch.

Time to dig deep for Pennies for Polio! President Jan asked President- Elect Bruce Dickson to speak about his recent President-Elect training. Bruce says he’s been bitten by the Rah-Rah Rotary bug. Bottom line: our club still owes about $9,000 by June of 2012 as our portion of the matching funds for the $355 million Gates Foundation matching grant towards polio eradication. Anybody want to step up and volunteer to take on the challenge of raising the money? Bruce is looking for a volunteer. And he still wants at least ten more people to participate in the club’s long term planning session. Please contact him if you are willing to be a part of the process.

Interact President AUSTIN PALACIOS gave a report on the club’s activities.

AOF SOMPATPIRON gave a report on the exchange students’ Ski Trip to Baker City. He didn’t do so well at snowboarding—it was the first time he’d seen snow! He didn’t like the Indian Museum—thought it was boring, but overall the trip was fun. Even though he wasn’t paired with another student and had to spend time alone with his host family, there was a basketball game and a dance to compensate.

CONY CAMPBELL gave a report on the same trip—it was her birthday and she enjoyed that. She didn’t care for the Indian Museum either, but she did enjoy being in the classroom they visited. She said the kids were excited about having the exchange students there.

MAIN EVENT

This week's program was Todd Casebeer’s vocational talk

Todd started out very young, about 53 years ago. He was born in Portland but the family moved around quite a bit during the early years—his dad was an exec with Standard Oil. He and his brothers made new friends but kept the old ones, too. He said some people know him as Richard, because that is his official first name and one of his teachers in Salem insisted on using it in her classroom. (His wife calls him RT.)

Todd grew up picking beans and berries and couldn’t escape the work, as his mom was the bus driver! He appreciates the work ethic he learned back in the day and wishes kids had the same opportunities today.

Todd was A Fish and Wildlife major at OSU for awhile, until he realized there was a 10 year waiting list for a full time job with the department. So he went to work, first with Boise cascade, and later in the construction industry.  After a long stint driving for the Jones Oil Company in Salem (1 million miles and no tickets) he went to work for Capitol Honda and is still there today. Todd is looking forward to working with the company’s new owner and says he’s been so busy he didn’t have time to get nervous about his speech.

He’s been married 31 years and has two kids—a son Rory, 31 and a daughter Sierra, 27.

CLOSING

After his presentation, President Jan gave him a medal with the Rotary wheel on one side and the Four Way Test on the other saying his blue badge was not yet available. She then had him sign a book for the Early Readers project.

We welcome Todd to the club.

Finally, Richard Weed reported that outbound student RICKY BODLE has been keeping busy in Chile, working with his host family in the rescue efforts after the recent earthquake and ongoing aftershocks in the country.
