ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

McMinnville Rotary Meeting Summary

OPENING

President Jan Hartzell called the meeting to order at 12:15, and thanked Johannes Goddik, Ken Till, and Ray Fields for handling the set-up chores for the meeting and greeters Todd Casebeer, Pam Watts.  Darrick Price, in the Inspirational Moment, asked everyone to keep the plight of Haitians in their thoughts and prayers.  Darrick mentioned that he had spent some time in that poverty-stricken nation, and understood firsthand the magnitude of utter destruction wreaked by the recent earthquake.  The Pledge of Allegiance was then led by Kris Olsen.

MEMBER RECOGNITION BRAGS AND ANNOUNCMENTS

Darrick Price stepped up to the podium to handle the Member Recognition portion of the meeting.

Randy McCreith was recognized for a birthday (number 54!). Randy mentioned that one of the advantages of being on Facebook was receiving over 35 birthday congratulations from well-wishers.

Dan Gardner announced that his son, Jason, was recently recognized as “Firefighter of the Year” with the Newberg Fire Department.

Todd Casebeer proclaimed the opening of a new Used Car facility at his business, a positive indicator that our economy is rebounding

Araceli Ortiz gave an update on the activities of the Rotaract Club in Yamhill County.

Lee Vasquez reported that longtime member Waldo Farnham was at home and resting comfortably after his recent knee surgery.

President Jan Hartzell took the opportunity to remind members to fish out loose change and donate it to the Pennies For Polio repositories located on the tables.

ROTARIAN MAGAZINE

Kristi Brill provided an update on the highlights of two recent issues of Rotarian Magazine.  Of special interest was the cover story in the January issue about the deplorable lack of proper sanitary facilities facing 4 out of 10 persons on the planet.  It is a subject that is difficult to confront by most people, but it simply must be if efforts to rid the planet of disease and malnutrition are successful.  The article pulls no punches.  In many third-world nations, open sewers and public defecation are the norm, a fact which most of us would find unthinkably horrible.  On the positive side, the article outlines a number of reasonably simple solutions to provide proper sanitation to the billion-plus people who lack these facilities, but the cost will be enormous.  Enormous, but worth it, to be sure.

MAIN EVENT

Assistant Governor Art Bradley introduced our featured speaker, District 5100 Governor KRISTI HALVORSON.  DG KRISTI is a native Oregonian who grew up in Lake Oswego.  Her Rotary journey began in 1989, when she joined the Kruse Way-Lake Oswego Rotary Club.  She has been honored as “Rotarian of the Year” twice, and served as her club’s President in 1999-2000.

DG KRISTI opened her presentation by asking how long our own members have been Rotarians.  She pointed out that 35% of Rotarians have been members for three years or less, a very positive sign that Rotary International continues to grow and thrive worldwide.  She provided some facts about the global reach of Rotary, noting that there are over 1.2 million members worldwide, serving in over 33,800 clubs.  Our own District (5100) is considered quite large by Rotary standards, boasting 75 clubs with over 4,000 members, and is well-known for its vigorous Youth Exchange Program, along with its participation in matching grants programs around the world.

DG KRISTI then spoke about the two major braches of Rotary: Rotary International, and the Rotary Foundation (TRF).  Rotary International’s revenue is received primarily from annual membership dues, which are then used to fund meetings, conventions, trainings, membership programs and services, management, building operations, and publications and supplies.  The Rotary Foundation is the charitable arm of our organization, and its revenue is derived from contributions and investment earnings.  The Foundation funds three program areas: humanitarian grants, educational programs, and PolioPlus.

KRISTI continued by giving an update on polio.  Polio continues to persist in India, Nigeria, Pakistan, and Afghanistan.  Unless polio is wiped out completely, 10 million children worldwide can expect to be stricken by the disease over the next 40 years.

She concluded her presentation by discussing the “Future Vision Plan”, a guide for expanding Rotary’s humanitarian efforts in it’s second century of existence.  The Future Vision Plan is designed to simplify Rotary Foundation programs and processes, and place focus on six specific areas: a) Maternal and child health, b) water and sanitation, c) disease prevention and treatment, d) basic education and illiteracy, e) economic and community development, and f) peace and conflict prevention/resolution.

Following DG KRISTI’S presentation, President Jan called upon our club's secretary, Teresa Smith, to present a gift basket to DG KRISTI and Ray Fields, the club's TRF Chair,  announced that, in honor of her visit, the McMinnville Rotary Club would donate $1,000 to Haitian relief efforts, and an additional $1,000 to PolioPlus.

Jan Hartzell then asked KRISTI to sign a book for the Early Readers Program at the McMinnville Library.
