Kristi
Brill
walked us through the highlights of this month’s Rotarian. Former
Yamhill resident Nicholas Kristof and
his wife have written a book called,
“Half the Sky—turning oppression into
opportunity for women worldwide.”
There’s an article about their work in
the magazine.
On December 2nd, , Itzhak
Perlman will perform at the Concert to
End Polio with the New York
Philharmonic, at the Lincoln Center for
the Performing Arts. All proceeds will
go to Rotary’s US$200 Million Challenge.
Read the article about him and also the
one about James De Priest, former
conductor of the Oregon Symphony, in
this month’s Rotarian.
Kristi
gave us the eight ways we can each help
to change the world “on the cheap.” What
are they? Read the article and find out!
President
Jan Hartzell
gave a quick recap from the
latest board meeting. Club attendance
YTD is 66.47%. Club membership YTD
includes 91 active members, 5 honorary
members, 3 new members and 4 members
who’ve recently resigned their
membership from the club. The board
voted to make Araceli Ortiz an
honorary member. She was our speaker
last week and is an active member of
Rotaract in Washington County.
The board honored a request from
Frank Bumpus and donated $1,000 from
the President’s Fund to Juliette’s
House.
Our inbound exchange students CONY and
AUF are doing very well, both in school
and with their host families.
Rich Scheiber
is on schedule with the dictionary
project.
Pennies for Polio has raised $647.23 so
far.
President Jan
gave us some numbers for member accounts
receivables, noting that tough economic
times may be making it difficult for
members to keep up with their financial
obligations to the club.
Director Elva Salinas-Garcia has
taken a job that keeps her out of town
every Friday. As a result, she has
resigned both her directorship and her
membership in the club. However, the
great news is that Former Rotary
president Molly Walker has agreed
to step in and fill this position.
There is still a Director’s position to
be filled. President Jan said
she’s approached a few members about it
and is waiting to hear what they have to
say. This position will be in charge of
vocational awards, concerts in the park,
the dictionary project, park
preservation and maintenance, 4-H
auction, and environmental tips. Not
much to do…J
Carole Benedict
will be taking over as Treasurer from
Ron Benek in March, when he retires.
President
Jan
asked Jeff Sargent to come up and
speak about the Art and Wine Auction
(Uncorked) committee, as it is such a
big undertaking and represents an
important revenue stream for the club.
Jeff announced the next committee
meeting, which is Friday, November 20th
at 11:00 am at the First Federal
boardroom. Jeff is seeking
volunteers—including spouses and family.
President Jan
introduced each of the other Directors
and spoke about their responsibilities.
She invited every club member to fill
out a questionnaire indicating both
their current committees and projects,
and the committees and projects in which
the member might be interested. When
it’s all laid out in black and white,
it’s easy to see that this club does a
lot, thanks to everyone being involved
at some level.
After a few minutes of informal chatting
with the various committee heads, Jan
pulled us all back together to draw for
the Paul Harris fellowship. This was an
incentive to encourage attendance at the
club assembly.
Guess who won? Gary Rueter!
Already a Paul Harris fellow, he can
transfer the fellowship to his wife.
Jeff Sargent
ran the projector this week-- he flashed
the slide to inform the club that next
week we’ll have Aaron Clifton, “Scouting
for Food” and Students of the Month.
