ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

OPENING

Greeters Steve Larson and Kelly Odegaard were quick with a handshake and a smile.

Darrick Price offered an inspirational moment.

Gary Rueter led the club in the flag salute.

President Jan thanked our greeters, and Johannes for the always faithful setup.

VISITING ROTARIANS AND GUESTS

Gary Eastlund introduced TODD CASEBEER of Capital Honda in McMinnville.

Al Owen introduced MELANIE PURVIS, our outbound exchange student for 2010-11, and her mother JULIE PURVIS.

Richard Weed presented 2008-09 outbound exchange CAITY BERNARDS, who returned from Thailand a couple of months ago, soon-to-be 2009-10 outbound CHEYENNE WHISENHUNT and our current inbound exchange student from Brazil, TAMARA BORGES.

David Pflender welcomed DUDLEY FROST, who has recently transferred to the morning club, back for a special presentation.

Carole Benedict introduced her husband ANDY. Next week they'll both be going to New York and then on to France.

MEMBER RECOGNITION, BRAGS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Darrick Price assumed the microphone to the usual smattering of applause

Edwina Castle celebrates her birthday on Aug. 9th, claiming that she will then officially be an antique!

John Ailstock is celebrating an anniversary and also had a recent birthday. He'll bring a check for both next week

Richard Weed proudly acknowledged 26 years of marriage to his lovely wife Donna.

Gary Eastlund recognized his three year anniversary.

Steve Battaglia reminded the club that there is one more concert in the park for the season. It will be this Tuesday evening at 7 pm, at the Linfield oak grove, and features a lively salsa band. He was glad to see more Rotarians there last week!

Bruce Huffman announced that if anyone wanted to hear his kids sing, they should come out to the annual Rock of Ages/Valley View Air Show on Saturday.

LV Van Blaricom admitted her talent for running into inanimate objects recently, and gave a shout out to True Form Collision Repair.

Richard Weed took the podium to share a letter from outbound exchange student RICKY BODLE, who just arrived in Chile. RICKY was detained briefly at customs going into the country for bringing some filberts, which scared him a bit! He wrote about the poverty in Santiago, and how his new host family showed him off to their friends and neighbors.

President Jan returned to remind us to dig into our pockets and fill the red buckets on the tables for Pennies for Polio. She mentioned that an upcoming Rotary meeting on Friday August 28th is a special thank you luncheon for the Wine and Art workers and will include a special welcome to spouses. The club will need to know if you plan to bring yours.

MAIN EVENT

Jeff Sargent  stepped to the podium to introduce our guest speaker DENISE SWANSON, the Resource Development Director for the United Way of the Mid-Willamette Valley, which fully serves Yamhill County, who appeared before the club to introduce a new service now available locally -- 2-1-1.

2-1-1 is a hotline number and online database the public can access to get contact information for social services. It is available by phone M-F, 8:00 am – 6:00 pm, and online at www.yamhill211.org.

DENISE explained that not only are people in need important clients, but so are the non-profits that provide services, such as Yamhill Community Action Partnership and many others in the area. 2-1-1 helps reduce the phone call burden on them by filtering and directing questions to the proper organizations. United Way has a new volunteer action center, Hands On Mid-Willamette Valley, to serve as the 2-1-1 call center.

2-1-1 also reduced pressure on the 9-1-1 system, as many calls to that number, especially during and after a disaster, are social service related.

2-1-1 gathers important data for social services planning, as it collects the kind of services the public is seeking and helps identify gaps in the community. Quarterly reports will be posted online so that non-profits and organizations like Rotary can see where the needs are and respond to them.

The service is bi-lingual English and Spanish, and can provide translation into many other languages as well.

The concept for 2-1-1 started at an Atlanta, Georgia United Way in 1997 and has been spreading across the country since. It is available in about 80% of the U.S. now, but only about 50% of Oregon is currently served.

The program is in Yamhill County on a two year pilot basis, half funded by United Way and half by the County Commission on Children and Family Services. The ideal would be for it to be available 24/7, but additional funding will be needed. United Way and the State of Oregon are seeking federal dollars and private sector investment to help continue and expand the service.

What can we do as Rotarians? 1) Get the word out about the service – DENISE brought  flyers, info cards and posters to share. 2) Add non-profit services that we are aware of in the community to the database. Non-profits need to register with 2-1-1 so that they can maintain the accuracy of the system

CLOSING

President Jan thanked our guest, gave her our Rotary pen and had her sign an Early Reader Program book. President Jan closed by offering a random thanks to Ray Fields for supporting the presentations, and reminding us that next week's program will be a presentation about her exchange experience to Thailand from CAITY BERNARDS.
