MAIN EVENT |
Jeff
Sargent stepped to the podium
to introduce our guest speaker DENISE
SWANSON, the Resource Development
Director for the United Way of the
Mid-Willamette Valley, which fully
serves Yamhill County, who appeared
before the club to introduce a new
service now available locally -- 2-1-1.
2-1-1 is
a hotline number and online database the
public can access to get contact
information for social services. It is
available by phone M-F, 8:00 am – 6:00
pm, and online at
www.yamhill211.org.
DENISE
explained that not only are people in
need important clients, but so are the
non-profits that provide services, such
as Yamhill Community Action Partnership
and many others in the area. 2-1-1 helps
reduce the phone call burden on them by
filtering and directing questions to the
proper organizations. United Way has a
new volunteer action center, Hands On
Mid-Willamette Valley, to serve as the
2-1-1 call center.
2-1-1
also reduced pressure on the 9-1-1
system, as many calls to that number,
especially during and after a disaster,
are social service related.
2-1-1
gathers important data for social
services planning, as it collects the
kind of services the public is seeking
and helps identify gaps in the
community. Quarterly reports will be
posted online so that non-profits and
organizations like Rotary can see where
the needs are and respond to them.
The
service is bi-lingual English and
Spanish, and can provide translation
into many other languages as well.
The
concept for 2-1-1 started at an Atlanta,
Georgia United Way in 1997 and has been
spreading across the country since. It
is available in about 80% of the U.S.
now, but only about 50% of Oregon is
currently served.
The
program is in Yamhill County on a two
year pilot basis, half funded by United
Way and half by the County Commission on
Children and Family Services. The ideal
would be for it to be available 24/7,
but additional funding will be needed.
United Way and the State of Oregon are
seeking federal dollars and private
sector investment to help continue and
expand the service.
What can
we do as Rotarians? 1) Get the word out
about the service – DENISE brought
flyers, info cards and posters to share.
2) Add non-profit services that we are
aware of in the community to the
database. Non-profits need to register
with 2-1-1 so that they can maintain the
accuracy of the system
