ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

MEMBER RECOGNITION, BRAGS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Dan Gardner celebrated his birthday in 100 degree heat this past week.

Kelly Odegaard’s birthday was the 21st

Teresa Smith says she can’t believe it’s been 30 years, but she and her husband just celebrated that milestone anniversary.

Bruce Wyatt and his wife celebrated their anniversary with a visit to a Buddhist temple outside Shangri-la.

Phil Hutchison and his wife Susan have been married 38 happy years

Bruce Huffman and wife Esther marked 66 months of wedded bliss.

PAM WATTS (oh-so-close to being a member) reports that she and hubby Cliff are chairing the Harvest Festival next weekend out at the Heritage Center on Highway 18.

Walt Haight reminded us that Gallery Theater is opening a new show, “Taffeta Memories.”  It’s a walk down memory lane, with old songs from the 50’s and 60’s. Walt’s wife Dawn is one of the leads in the musical.

Colin Armstrong announced that his only granddaughter is being married Friday evening.

Brent Adams’ daughter is being married Saturday, In addition, his older son Andrew is doing very well in his Kickball league.

Bruce Wyatt announced Linfield College will welcome the largest group of international students ever this fall. He encouraged the members to consider becoming a Linfield Friendship Family. You aren’t required to house a student. The program is designed to welcome students into our community and provide a social, family experience for them as they adjust to our culture.

Finally, a few thoughts on marriage from Darrick Price: 13 years goes by in a flash when you’re having fun. When you’re married, it seems like 13 years. Darrick attempted to decode the cryptic remarks his wife makes; some obvious, others less so. Finally, it boils down to the fact that we all have a crush on Matt Damon (except for those in the Jennifer Anniston and Danny De Vito camps.) Best wishes to Darrick and Raylinda.

President Jan asked us to put our spare change in the red polio baskets. She also thanked Randy McCreith for opening his home last week for the annual picnic. The McCreiths have a beautiful home and garden and though the event was lightly attended, those who were there had a wonderful time. Please support the concerts on the lawn series at Linfield. Next Tuesday’s performers: Becki Sue and her Big Rockin’ Daddies. Not to be missed!

RICKY BODLE is off to Chile soon. He thanked the club for their support and for the opportunity to represent the club as an exchange student.

SPECIAL RECOGNITION

Lee Vasquez gave an informal wrap up of the recent “Uncorked” art and wine auction. The gross was higher than last year and while the final numbers aren’t in, it looks like the club will be giving even more to the two charities this year.

Each of the charities made $40,000 during two “Raise the Paddle” interludes during the oral auction.

There were three items still unsold from the auction and Lee found buyers for all of them—one of the buyers was his wife, IRMA.

Lee paid tribute to Gene Zinda, founder of the auction and to all the people who’ve served as Chairs of the event over the years. In passing the binder to Jeff Sargent, Lee remarked that he hopes the event will continue to grow and thrive.

The club gave a standing ovation to Erma Vasquez. The board voted to make Erma an honorary member of the club for her exemplary service over the years she has effectively co-chaired the auction with Lee. Erma was very gracious, and thanked all the people who have helped to make the event grow into such a success.

President Jan presented Lee and Erma with a painting Erma has long admired, which will remind them of the years they spent shepherding the auction to ever greater success.

MAIN EVENT

Edwina Castle gave her vocational speech.

Edwina’s mother was a ballet teacher and Edwina says she began dancing while still in the womb. Edwina’s father was an Army officer, and the family moved around quite a bit during Edwina’s early years. After a stint in Germany, Edwina’s mother and the children went to stay at her grandparents’ farm in Oklahoma, while her father fought in Vietnam.

Edwina loved her time in Colorado: skiing, hiking, and fishing. It was in Kansas that she first began to seriously study ballet, at the Renate Edwards Studios.

She began her college career at Kansas City Community College and moonlighted as a telephone lineman, back in the days when they were still called linemen.

Becoming dissatisfied with her job, she moved to Oregon to keep her grandmother company and began attending Southern Oregon State College in Ashland, where she continued to study dance.

She transferred to U of O and majored in Botany to please her father, who thought that dance wasn’t a serious career. She continued to take as many dance classes as she could and eventually transferred to OSU to complete her degree in Botany.

It was at OSU that she met her future husband, John Castle. She and John moved to Hawaii and became engaged there. They moved to Redlands, California, and Edwina reconnected with former ballet colleagues.

Eventually, John and Edwina moved to Oregon and began their family. They have two sons, Robin and Ehren, and a country estate with a large garden, an orchard, and several pets.

Edwina has been teaching ballet at gallery for 17 years and her business continues to grow and thrive. She has recently started teaching ballet at the Community Center, in order to accommodate all the students who want to take classes from her.

Edwina is very involved in the community and loves to travel with her family.

She continues to take master classes from top ballerinas and keeps up with the latest trends to prepare her students for any opportunities they may choose.

Edwina is an energetic woman with a zest for life.

CLOSING

Following her presentation, President Jan presented her with her blue badge and had her sign a book for the Early Reader Program. President Jan apologized to PAM WATTS, who was scheduled to become a member at the meeting, but had to be postponed because of time constraints. Next time!
