MAIN EVENT

Richard Weed took the podium to introduce our current Inbound Exchange Student, TAMARA BORGES, who was on hand to tell us of her life, her Brazilian home, her family, and her experiences here in the United States.  TAMARA proceeded to provide the club with one of the most delightful “vocationals” in recent club history.

She began by providing some salient facts about her homeland, Brazil.  The capital, Brasilia, was founded in 1960, and the two largest cities in the country are Sao Paulo and Rio de Janeiro.  The national language is Portueguese, and Brazil is the only country in South America where this language is commonly spoken.  The main unit of currency is the Real, and its current value is approximately 1 Real = 2 American Dollars.  There are 26 states in Brazil, and Tamara hails from the city of Araxa, which is in the state of Minas Gerais.  Maps show her city to be about 400 miles north of Sao Paulo.  There are 2306 Rotary Clubs in Brazil, along with 626 Rotaract Clubs!

TAMARA went on to show many photographs of the region, natural features, Rio, exotic animals, Brazilian cuisine, cultural events and festivals, and some famous Brazilians, all demonstrating the enormous diversity of the country and its people.  Photos of her home city of Araxa show it to be an attractive city in a sub-tropical environment, dotted with large churches and several museums and cultural centers.  Of particular interest was a photo of a very large, ancient tree that had the dubious distinction of being a “hanging tree” during times of slavery.

The club was then treated to some delightful images from TAMARA’s childhood, including one of her and her first boyfriend (age 5), a relationship that “didn’t work out”.  She shared photos of her family, her classmates, and her theater activities in Araxa, which included her work on a “Passion of Christ” production that she was part of for three years.

She then shared some of her experiences accrued during her current exchange, including photos of host families, friends, fellow exchange students, teachers, and various activities.  During her year at McMinnville High School, she played on the JV softball team, and participated in two theatrical productions, “Footloose” and “You Can’t Take It With You”, the latter in which she lit up the stage as an exiled Russian Countess.  She also worked backstage in the Gallery Theater production of “A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum”.

TAMARA closed her presentation by playing and singing a Brazilian song on the guitar, earning warm applause from the assembly.  She plans to attend college in Brazil, and plans to focus on Theater as a major.

CLOSING

Following a brief question & answer period, TAMARA was asked to sign a book for the McMinnville Library Early Reader Program.
Jan Hartzell reminded the membership that the Concerts in the Park series will continue on Tuesday the 14th at Linfield College, this week featuring the Midnight Serenaders.
