McMinnville Rotary Meeting Summary

OPENING

President Jan Hartzell held her first meeting as the third female president of the club with one member telling her, “Third time’s a charm.” President Jan first thanked Maureen Chapman and Richard Weed  for acting as greeters for today's meeting. Ray Fields presented the inspirational moment, beginning with the question: What is the dominant language on the Planet Earth? After considering English, Chinese and other languages, Ray responded, “binary,” due to the computers and machines used throughout the world. He then shared teaching of the historical Buddha titled "Honest Doubt". Lee Vasquez led us in the salute to the flag.

Frank Bumpus announced that he was celebrating his 46th anniversary and is married to his “best friend,” who remains his best friend today.

It was also announced that Past President Chuck Pattishall had his birthday on July 1, in Chuck’s words, “on a day I was no longer President of this club.” With Chuck’s service celebrated during the demotion dinner, Chuck said that his birthday was a happy day.

Van, too, had an announcement, proudly stating that he was able to deposit a commission check that morning, after closing a property sale. Moving on to “fun in the Darrick tradition,” Van went into an Independence Day quiz. Among the questions were: Who wrote the Declaration of Independence? A: Thomas Jefferson; How many men signed the Declaration of Independence? A: 56; Where was the Declaration of Independence signed? A: Philadelphia and many others.

Jeanne (now) DeRaeve, announced that she married Ed DeRaeve in a ceremony at Youngberg Hill and had officially changed her name.

With some unfinished business left from his year, Past President Chuck Pattishall took the podium. He gave a Presidential Citation to Elise Hui, program chair, who he said had, “great program after great program.” Another Presidential Citation was awarded to Teresa Smith, secretary, who Chuck said has been the “glue that’s held everything together.” She’s a pleasure to work with, Chuck added, and brings her experience as a Past President to the table. The Rotarian of the Year award was presented to Waldo Farnham, for “All the good things he’s done for this club,” Chuck said. While it was a tough decision, Chuck said that Waldo does a lot behind the scenes and he presented the award for “what he does now and what he will continue to do

Elise Hui asked club members to have their thoughts with former member Don Clark, who has an inoperable tumor which is a very serious form of cancer. He will be undergoing radiation treatment.

Steve Battagalia highlighted the Concerts in the Park, which begin in the Oak Grove at Linfield College on Tuesday, July 7. This is the 25th year of the concerts and Steve was seeking additional volunteers. Performers are The New Iberians. Rotary’s commitment is to provide five helpful Rotarians or friends to police the grounds.

President Jan returned to the stage and announced that she would be continuing the Pennies for Polio collection. She gave a little thank you to her bosses boss, Bob Emrick of Western Oregon Waste, where Jan also works. “Without his generosity, I would not be up here,” she said.

Lee Vasquez promoted the Oregon Wine and Art Auction, set for July 11, at Ken Wright Cellars in Carlton. He believes it will be one of the best auctions the club has had and it will also be the final year at Ken Wright’s. There is $57,000 pledged for sponsorships, although ticket sales are down this year because of the times. He was hoping to reach 300 in ticket sales and asked club members to help promote the final week of ticket sales. “The show will go forward,” said Lee, who thanked the volunteers for their efforts, especially Dianne Haugeberg. He also pointed out that he is co-chair for the event with his wife, Erma, who Lee said “does all the work.” “She is an incredible woman in the way she motivates and the thing’s she does,” President Jan added. “She’s an amazing person.

Several Red Wings were given for those who have donated $100 to the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. Receiving their wings were Frank Bumpus, Bob Emrick, Waldo Farnham, Norm Goss, (not pictured) Al Owen and Erin Stephenson.

MAIN EVENT

Youth exchange chair Richard Weed introduced the club’s two outbound students, Cheyenne Whisenhunt and Rickey Bodle, who were both the day’s program presenters.

Cheyenne, who is headed to Brazil, began with the history of the United States, statistics and the U.S. government, pointing out that the U.S. is slightly larger than Brazil and is the third largest country, behind Canada and China. She highlighted places to visit, including Mt. Rushmore, Las Vegas, the Florida Keys, Washington, D.C., New York City and Niagara Falls. She moved into statistics regarding Oregon, the nation’s 33rd state. Summarizing the diverse landscape and bringing in Oregon’s places to visit, including Silver Falls, Mt. Hood, Crater Lake, Portland and the Oregon Coast, Cheyenne moved to a description of the Willamette Valley before focusing on McMinnville and her own activities. She said the area had the historic Third Street district and is filled with caring people who strive to make a better place to live. In talking about out local club, Cheyenne pointed out the flagpole dedication, donating money to polio eradication and scholarships among the club’s projects. She discussed her school activities and showed photos of her family, including her parents and two sisters. Personally, she enjoys baking, reading, learning new things, caring for animals, spending time with friends and family, riding horses and hiking. She thanked the Rotary club for the opportunity to be a part of the youth exchange program.

Rickey, who is headed to Chile, had his PowerPoint presentation already translated into Spanish in preparation to address groups in his host country. He highlighted Oregon as being the best state in the U.S. He said the current American favorite sport is football and the most consumed is French fries. Boeing is the second largest commercial jet manufacturer in the world and the United States’ highest point is Mt. McKinley in Alaska while the lowest point is Death Valley in California. Rickey provided random facts about Oregon: Nike is from Oregon; the capitol is Salem; the state’s highest point is Mt. St. Helens; Crater Lake is the deepest lake in the U.S.; the Willamette valley is home to many farms and vineyards as well as 70% of the state’s population and the Willamette River crosses through the valley; the valley is also between two mountain ranges and features some of the best wines in the world. He also gave some random facts about McMinnville: it is Yamhill County’s largest city, has Linfield College and is home to the famous airplane, the Spruce Goose. In addition, there are two important festivals, Alien Daze and Turkey Rama (Rickey noted that his host sister thought that we were crazy when he told her about Daze). He said he is 16 years old and used to play American football, has participated acting in many plays and enjoys tennis and climbing mountains. While he added that his presentation is not complete, he enjoyed letting members see a sneak peek of what he will be presenting in his host country.
CLOSING

President Jan said that the two outbounds will represent the club very well and she is proud to be a part of a club which has them as representatives. Next week’s program is the club’s inbound student, Tamara Borges. In a new tradition, Jan will give random thank-yous because there are so many people who do so much for the club. The first random  thank-yous went to the club who takes attendance and counts money including Maureen Chapman, Teresa Smith, Ron Benek (not present) and Carole Benedict, and . “Remember to thank different Rotarians for what they do,” concluded Jan.
