McMinnville Rotary Meeting Summary

OPENING

Greeters:  Jeff Long and Rich Schieber; Patrick Fuchs provided the Inspirational Moment, a prayer of humble thanks for all that we have, and a reminder that we must continue our good works unflinchingly in the face of a troubled economy and a troubled world. The Pledge of Allegiance was then led by Bruce Stewart

VISITING ROTARIANS AND GUESTS

John Larsen introduced JON JOHNSON, a fellow Rotarian with the Morning Club, and Chief Financial Officer at First Federal.

Van Keck introduced his guest, GARY HAMPTON, a visiting Rotarian from the Sheridan Chapter.

Lee Means proudly introduced ARACELI ORTIZ, a soon-to-be graduate of Linfield College who will be attending RYLA in the upcoming weeks.  More on ARACELI below!

Erin Stephenson welcomed three representatives from YCAP:  PAM WATTS, MARY STEARN, and KRISTA McCALLUM.  The trio of YCAP volunteers were visiting as part of a promotion for a Capital Campaign Kickoff.

MEMBER RECOGNITION, BRAGS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Dianne Haugeberg was recognized for her birthday.  She is a Cinco de Mayo baby!

Paul Elias acknowledged the passing of another birthday.

Edwina Castle announced that her Futures Ballet group will be presenting Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake” on May 29, 30, and 31.  Based on Russian folklore, this most revered of classical ballets is not to be missed!

Lynda Wiegan reminded the membership of the annual Rotary Rose Sale project.  The roses will sell for $15.00/dozen, and delivery of the flowers will take place on June 5th.  Lynda announced that Team Captains will be calling each of us soon.  Sell those roses!!!

Steve Battaglia announced that planning for the Concerts in the Park series is going well.  There will be five Tuesday concerts, starting on July 7th and concluding August 4th.  Steve has secured entertainment for all five concerts, and is looking for volunteers to help monitor the events.  Good job, Steve!

Van Keck announced that he has taken on a new position at Prudential Northwest Properties

PE Jan Hartzell took a moment to thank Jeff Long and the members of the Program Committee for their excellent work in providing consistently excellent speakers and stimulating programs every week.

Jan called attention to the many items located in the ballroom that will be sold as part of the CASA auction on the evening of May 1st.   She also unveiled the new poster for “Uncorked”, formerly known as the Wine and Art Auction, and called upon Lee Vasquez to give the membership an update on the event.  Lee mentioned that everything is going according to plan, but added that the acquisition of sponsorships is a greater challenge this year due to the economy.

Rosemari Davis provided an update on the Swine Flu situation.  She anticipates that cases will likely be reported in Yamhill County, and reported that health agencies in the area are preparing accordingly.  She pointed out that “mild symptoms” are generally expected with this strain of influenza, and cautioned the membership to observe strict hygiene practices to minimize the chances of contracting the illness.

Prior to the main program, ARACELI ORTIZ was asked to say a few words about her experiences with YCAP and her plans for the future.  ARACELI’S family relocated to Oregon when she was 2 ½, and lived out of a car for a time.  The family eventually found housing, but it was extremely modest and poorly built.  With help from YCAP, the family eventually rose out of dire straits to the point where ARACELI could attend college.  She is about to earn her Sociology degree from Linfield College, and will soon be attending RYLA in Multnomah County.

MAIN EVENT

Lee Means gave a presentation on the Yamhill Community Action Partnership (YCAP) building project.  She was joined by County Commissioner MARY STEARN, who spoke of the plan to build a much-needed new facility in the Rivergate Industrial District.  The goal of YCAP’s “Building for the Future” capital campaign is to raise $2.96 million to construct a facility that better serves all Yamhill county residents.  The new building will be a permanent home for YCAP that more than doubles the current rented space, increases efficiency, and enhances client services.

The proposed cost of the facility includes Building Construction, Street and Utility Improvements, Equipment and Furnishings, Engineering and Permit costs, and Administration and Development costs.  The new building will be located on a new street extending north of Riverside Drive, near the McMinnville Water & Light facility, and will hopefully be completed in 2010.

CLOSING

Following a brief question & answer period, MARY and Lee were asked to sign a book for the Early Readers Program at the McMinnville Library. Next week's program is Teacher recognition.
