ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

MEMBER RECOGNITION, BRAGS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Darrick Price conducted member recognition. Tom Hellie belatedly acknowledged his birthday. Jill Methven and Carole Benedict were recognized for their anniversaries, 11 years and 18 years and Ken Till, 51 years respectively. Absent this week but never-the-less remembered for his anniversary was Van Keck, 43 years, .

Jack Thornton announced a Chef’s Dinner taking place at Noah’s on Thursday, April 23rd. You can call for reservations. The featured chef is a sous-chef at Timberline Lodge and is one of just a few Certified World Chefs.

Lynda Wiegan announced the impending Annual Rose Sale and asked for volunteers for Team Captains. It’s a major fundraiser for the club and she encouraged everyone’s participation.

Walt Haight announced the Gallery Theater One-Act play festival taking place this weekend.

As a wrap up, Darrick shared one of the many questions he receives from club members each week. This week’s question was posed by John Larson. As he gets to frame Darrick squarely in his viewfinder each week, he wonders about the secret of Darrick’s incredible good looks. Darrick was happy to share his secrets. “I’m not too tall, and I started losing my hair at 28—you know the ladies like a bald spot. And, along with George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon, I have natural grace and charm.” And now we know!

President Chuck
asked us all to make a contribution toward a steak dinner for the National Guard personnel set to deploy to Iraq . The American Legion is hosting the dinner and they had all expenses covered, except for the meat. So instead of Pennies for Polio this week, the members contributed cash for the dinner. Bob Emrick passed the hat on their behalf.

President Chuck was pleased to announce that he’s added some new blue ink to our local and international donations chart.  The club sent sympathy cards to Maryalice Russell, who lost her husband and to Molly Walker, who just lost her father. 39 of our club members have perfect attendance to date. Jan Hartzell gave a report to the board at their last meeting—she has a budget meeting scheduled. There will be a Club Social—which counts as a meeting—this upcoming Thursday, the 19th of March, at Methven Winery. Time is 5:30-7:00 pm. It’s a great opportunity to mingle and socialize without a formal agenda. Hope to see you!

MAIN EVENT

Erin Stephenson has been a club member for almost six years and had never given her vocational talk. It was lively and informative, like Erin herself.

Highlights: She had a horse for ten years and competed unsuccessfully at horse shows for nine of those years. She said it toughened her up for LIFE.

Finally her parents bought her a prize-winning show horse, which unfortunately had to give up show biz after a broken leg.

She attended the University of Oregon, mostly because she wanted the blissful anonymity of a large school, after being a superstar at Mac High. (She confessed to feeling “burned-out” after her high school career.)

After graduation, Erin and her future husband traveled to Europe and were in Granada, Spain on September 11, 2001. She said it was very interesting to be in such a heavily Muslim county during that time, and that everyone treated them very well.

When they returned she was a VISTA volunteer with Habitat for Humanity and later accepted the Executive Director position, which brought her fabulous training opportunities. She reported that Harvard Business School has bellboys in the dorms. (Tom Hellie could not make the same claim for Linfield.)

Erin tried grad school, but her pregnancy forced her to reconsider that. After her son was born, she decided that a part time career fit better with family priorities and she now works for First Federal as the Community Relations Coordinator. She enjoys administering grant funds, and still enjoys fundraising—for Habitat, for YCAP, and for the Heritage Center. She is also on the Advisory Board of Lutheran Family Services.

CLOSING

After a cute story about her mom, Linda Stephenson, Erin signed a book and accepted a Rotary pen.

President Chuck then invited the members to stand and recite the Rotary Four Way Test, and the meeting was adjourned.

Next week’s presentation: the four finalists from the Rotary Four-way Test Speech competition..
