ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

Invocation by Frank Bumpus

Flag salute led by Gene Zinda

VISITING ROTARIANS AND GUESTS

Edwina Castle, guest of Lynda Wiegan

Brandon Malloy’s wife, Melissa

McMinnville's former First Lady, Candy Gormley, was introduced by Ray Fields

Ray Fields teased Rosemari Davis about being a visiting Rotarian to our club since we hadn’t seen her in quite some time, and then introduced Dan Ordyna, Chief Operating Officer of Willamette Valley Medical Center.

MEMBER RECOGNITION, BRAGS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Russ Rainwater conducted member recognition

Ron Noble, who won’t have his house “TP-ed” by neighbor Prez Chuck for fear of reprisal

Walt Haight, who admits to 55—what’s the REAL age?

Ed and Candy Gormley are celebrating 41 years of wedded bliss. Ed told us that Candy abducted him from the seminary and that he was actually underage at the time the marriage took place.

Lee Means announced the county wide homeless count on Wednesday, January 28th.This is part of the 10 Year Plan to End Homelessness. She can still use volunteers for the early morning count.

Ed Gormley announced that tickets for the 20th annual Mayor’s Charity Ball are still available at www.mayorsball.com.

Prez Chuck gave a special thanks to both the Program Committee and the Pacesetter Committee. It’s part of his resolve to recognize each committee during the year.  Rotary International has established a Disaster Relief Action Group. Each club is asked to designate one member to be the coordinator with RI. If anyone is interested in this position, please speak up! The Gates Foundation recently donated a million dollars toward the eradication of polio. With a matching grant from RI, the total to date for this effort is $555 million dollars, Those Pennies for Polio really do add up. There’s an opportunity for first-time contributors to the Paul Harris Fund. If a member gives $100, RI will match that donation. It’s a great way to get started. Guatemala Relief Trip update: Prez Chuck, Brent Adams, Jill Methven and 50 other members of the team will leave the end of February. There are medical and dental teams, electricity and construction teams, a water quality team and a micro-credit team. Together they will have a significant impact on the quality of life in the village they visit. With matching grants, they are taking $46,000 (to date) to assist the villagers. President Chuck acknowledged the Foundation board and their outstanding leadership and professionalism. He noted the many funds that have been established to assist student athletes, musicians, and scholars.

Sharon Larson announced that the dictionary project is on schedule and will send an email to update the members on the progress.

Dale Tomlinson gave a pitch for the KOB raffle tickets. He pointed out that Dan Gardner has won the grand prize twice. Volunteers circled the room with raffle tickets for this year’s grand prize, a trip for two to the Mexican Riviera. Sales seemed fairly brisk.

MAIN EVENT

President Chuck then introduced our program. Lori Cooper, the Director of the McMinnville Arts and Communications Academy, presented Paul Wolf, a language arts teacher at the high school. He introduced McKenzie Paasch, a junior at MACA, and Travis Fahy, a sophomore at MACA. MACA is an alternative, magnet high school located on the former Adams Elementary School campus. The school is a public high school, separate from McMinnville High School, although the MACA students participate in sports programs at Mac High. The maximum number of students will be 400. Currently, any student who applies is accepted. The school stresses technology for the 21st century, and integrates technology across the entire curriculum.

McKenzie explained the ECHO concept: Explore, Create, Honor and Own. ECHO is the way students learn to absorb the philosophy of teamwork and personal responsibility.

Travis presented PBL: Project Based Learning. Students learn though developing and creating projects. Last year they worked with 27 non-profit agencies to produce PSA’s, websites and brochures, including one for YCAP.

The students presented 3 videos and a brochure, created by other MACA students.

Chris McLaran is a member of the school’s Community Outreach Board. MACA students are encouraged to do internships in local businesses 2 days per week, 90 minutes per day, over the course of a term.

CLOSING

After the presentation, Lori signed a “Little Mermaid” book for the club. President Chuck invited the members to stand and recite the 4-way test, and the meeting was adjourned.
