A VERY SPECIAL PRESENTATION

Prior to the Membership Recognition portion of the program, Steve Macy tearfully shared his grief for the untimely death of the Oregon State Beavers in the Civil War game.  Bedecked in black and orange mourning attire, Steve provided an emotional eulogy that was moving and heartfelt.  It was noted, however, that several members (notably Van Keck) were unmoved.

MEMBER RECOGNITION, BRAGS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Van Keck (still giddy from Steve Macy’s eulogy) happily announced his 65th birthday.

Colin Armstrong noted that not only was he celebrating his 81st birthday, but also 61 years of wedded bliss with his bride Milly.

Jeff Sargent announced that he and his wife Julia have been married for 8 wonderful years

Norm Goss made a donation to account for his recent birthday, and proudly noted that he is starting his 51st year as a Rotarian having completed 50 years of perfect attendance.

Steve Battaglia announced that he was observing a birthday.

Leslie VanBlaricom (“L.V.”) announced that a food drive was being held at the OnPoint Credit Union to benefit YCAP.

Erin Stephenson announced that, with a Duck victory in the Civil War, Brent Adams will soon be paying off on a friendly wager.  Per prior agreement, Brent will be dressed in a fabulous outfit featuring the lemon & green colors of Oregon, and paraded before the membership.

Brent Adams, shrugging off his pending date with humiliation, announced that former member Eve Barnett’s son will be playing in high school Washington State championship playoffs.

Dan Gardner happily announced the arrival of a new grandson!

Jeanne Hermens announced her engagement to Ed DeReave, a prominent local businessman with D&D Electric

Shoshannah Siefken called attention to the “Tree of Hope” flyers that were distributed to the tables in the room.  Support of the Tree of Hope will benefit Henderson House, Reflection House, YCAP, Department of Human Service, and Seeds of Hope.

Steve Battaglia announced that the annual Winter Ball, staged by the Ballroom and Bellissimo, will be held on December 19th, with a portion of the proceeds going to the Yamhill County Food Bank.

Tamara Borges proudly proclaimed that, after weeks of frustration, she was finally able to open her locker at school!

Amy Palacios, a member of the Mac High School Interract Club, announced that donations were being sought to help needy families at Christmas and to support YCAP.

MEET OUR NEWEST MEMBER

Dan Gardner presented Marcia Baragary for formal induction into the McMinnville Rotary Club.  Marcia has transferred to McMinnville from Dallas (Oregon), where she was a prominent member of the Dallas Rotary Club as the immediate Past President.

ANOTHER SPECIAL PRESENTATION

President Chuck had Jack Crabtree presente a check for $4000.00 to Thugz Off Drugs (represented at the meeting by Alan Evans, Sean Navarre, and Newberg Rotarian Mike Caruso).  Alan thanked the club profusely for its generosity, and he noted that the program offered support to 293 people last year, with an estimated 60% recovery rate.

HOW TO GET A CLUB ROSTER

Ray Fields was invited up to the podium to demonstrate how to login and access the new Membership Roster, which is available at the District 5100 website (www.district5100.org).  With helpful handouts provided at each table, Ray gave a step-by-step tutorial on how to access the new roster.  Exciting stuff!

MAIN EVENT

New member Phil Hutchinson, President/CEO of the McMinnville Chamber of Commerce gave his vocational talk.  Phil was born in eastern Oregon, and raised in the small community of Union.  His family eventually relocated to Portland, where he matriculated at Grant High School.  He earned a degree in Agricultural Economics at Oregon State University in 1970, and proceeded to graduate school, where he met his wife, Susan.

Phil tested the waters of various occupations in his field, including work in the real estate business and the savings & loan industry in Newport.  In 1991, he joined the Newport Chamber of Commerce, then moved to the title and escrow business in 2004.  In March of 2008, he was hired as the new President of the McMinnville Chamber of Commerce.

Phil and Susan have three children.  Their oldest son, Eric, is currently doing a residency in Veterinary Medicine at Johns Hopkins University.  Daughter Emily is married and lives in Michigan.  Youngest son Matthew is a recent graduate of Western Oregon University, and is currently living in Coos Bay.

Phil joined Rotary in 1981, and served a term as President of the Newport Club in 1989-90.

He closed his presentation by thanking the club for the opportunity to join its ranks.  Following his talk, Phil was asked to sign a book for the Early Readers Program by President Chuck Pattishall.

CLOSING

With a few minutes remaining, President Chuck asked Kristi Brill to step up to the podium to discuss the highlights found in the latest issue of Rotarian magazine.  Kristi called attention to one of the main features of this month’s issue that details the challenges of providing polio vaccinations around the world.  The process of developing the vaccine, getting it delivered safely, and getting children inoculated is a hugely daunting task.  Good reading in this month’s issue!

The following are the names of those nominated to the club board for the 2009-2010 Rotary year.  Nominations will remain open until the election which will be held at the annual meeting on December 19th.
