MEMBER RECOGNITION, BRAGS AND
ANNOUNCEMENTS |
 Host
Derrick Price called on Norm
Goss to admit that his birthday is
coming up, on Nov. 23rd. He agreed to
provide an ex post facto check next
week. Several other birthdays were
called (Steven Battaglia, Dick Ecker,
Ed Gormley) and one anniversary (Rosemari
Davis), but they were not present
and will have to be congratulated at a
later meeting.
|

LV VanBlaricom
put in an honest dollar for her
daughter, who not only just passed her
Master's exam, but already has a job
offer and is moving back to Portland.
|

Sharon Larson
added her dollar to announce that the
Boy Scouts of Yamhill County would be
picking up food on December 6th to help
provide for those in need during the
holidays.
|

Bruce Huffman
dropped in a dollar because he admitted
that he made a boo-boo and sent out the
letters to Past Presidents for the
recognition dinner, but failed to put a
space on the RSVP form for them to write
their name! If any have already RSVP'd,
please verify with him.
|

Jill Methven
encouraged members to visit the Methven
Vineyards tasting room the weekend
following Thanksgiving (11/28 – 11/30).
They'll be serving tastings of their
superb pinots, along with artisan
cheeses, Honest Chocolates, and more.
|

Lee Means
shared with all that YCAP's food bank is
making 250 Thanksgiving food baskets,
and they still need about 90-100
turkeys. Excel Fitness has donated quite
a few, but more are needed.
|

Wayne Bailey mentioned that
Youngberg Hill would also be open after
Thanksgiving, and invited members to
come by and visit them as well. One of
their wines just received an outstanding
rating from Wine Spectator magazine, for
the third year in a row.
|

Bob Emrick announced that this
Friday and Saturday his wife Nancy would
be singing at Noah's. The shows are sold
out, but he has some tickets if anyone
is still interested.
|

Derrick Price returned to ask
us, as we head into the Thanksgiving
week, to think about and perhaps share
some of the things that we are thankful
for.
|

John Larsen is thankful for
Homeward Bound Pets. His wife was
looking for an additional pitter-patter
of feet around the house, so they picked
up two cats from the local shelter
recently. John's wife, and John, are
both very happy with them.
|

Dan Gardner
is thankful to still be in business, and
extends his thoughts to those who worked
at Valley RV Center, which recently
closed its doors. His business is taking
in four to five of Valley RV's former
employees, and he encouraged others to
consider doing so as well if they have
staff needs.
|

TAMARA
BORGES is thankful to be in Oregon, and
is grateful that everyone is so nice!
|

Bob Emrick
is thankful for the great employees that
he has at Western Oregon Waste. At a
recent meeting his staff recognized the
difficulty many are facing, and
rededicated themselves to being
supportive and uplifting.
|

Derrick Price
is thankful for this community. He and
his family have been here two years now,
and they feel very welcomed and blessed.
|

President Chuck closed the
segment by sharing how grateful he is
for all of the members of this Rotary
club. He is having a wonderful time
serving as president.
President Chuck reminded
us that he, Art Bradley and Jack Crabtree
will be tossing their
weight around at the Thugz Off Drugs
bowl-a-thon next week. A sponsorship
list is going around.
|

President Chuck then called up
the following to receive their 100%
attendance certificates:
Al Hansen (1 year);
Elise Hui (1 year);
Jill Methven (1 year);
Dudley Frost (2 years);
Dan Gardner (6 years)
|

President-Elect Jan Hartzell announced the proposed slate of 2009-10
Directors, which will be submitted for
election at a meeting next month. They are:
Jack Crabtree,
Vice-President/President Nominee; Richard
Weed, Lee Means, Paul Elias, Elva
Salinas Garcia, Brandon Malloy and Jeff Sargent.
Other members appointed to the board are
Teresa Smith,
Secretary; Ron Benek, Treasurer;
Ray Fields, International
Foundation Director; Bruce Dickson,
as President-Elect; and
Chuck Pattishall as Past President
will continue on the board.
|

Sharon Larson offered an
update on the Dictionary Project. They
are still looking for four more
coordinators, and a sign-up sheet is
circulating. If you have questions, see
Sharon, Phil Hutchinson or Ray
Fields.
|

Carole Benedict
passed along an announcement from Parks
and Recreation Director Jay Pearson that
on November 29th the McMinnville
Community Center will welcome the Squirm
Burpee Circus, an entertaining
vaudeville-type performance. McMenamin's
will cater a dinner in advance. Tickets
can be purchased for either the dinner
and show, or just the show. Also, on
Nov. 28th a juggling workshop will be
held for the whole family.
|

Past President Dan Gardner
proudly inducted new members Jim
and Molly Walker transfers from
Gold Beach Rotary and Rich
Schieber sponsored by Jon Triest into the club. They each
received their Four Way Test framed
pictures, Rotary lapel pins, and the
history of McMinnville Rotary Club
books.

MAIN EVENT
|
In
recognition that November is
Rotary International Foundation Month, Ray
Fields introduced MARIE TYLER. MARIE works
for the Washington County Sheriff's Department
as the Commander of the county jail. While in high
school in Hillsboro, she became a Rotary
exchange student, an experience which changed
her life and started her commitment to Rotary,
which continues to this day.
MARIE began by
saying how impressed she was by the McMinnville
Rotary Club. She got the Rotary bug while she
was a speech and debate student in high school.
She was selected to participate in the
District's youth exchange
program in 1976, and was assigned with six other
Oregon students to go to the Philippines. There
she lived in a town that was at the time 25,000
people. Today it has about 250,000! She was
fortunate enough to live with four wonderful
families, the last one which included six
children all living with their parents in a
large hut. MARIE was the only American on her
island, save for a missionary that lived on the
remote other side, so she receive a lot of
attention.
MARIE joined the
Sheriff's office in 1987. Five years later, she
saw a posting in the office for a Rotary Group
Study Exchange (GSE) to Japan. As soon as she
saw it was sponsored by Rotary, she knew that
she had to apply for it. She was fortunate
enough to be selected, and the county paid her
while she was out, considering it a vocational
training opportunity. She took a crash Berlitz
course in Japanese, however, it is not an easy
language to learn. After a few presentations at
Rotary meetings, one guest informed her that she
was telling everyone she was a “meter maid.” She
soon learned the proper description of her job,
and got a great deal of attention afterwards.
MARIE made 93 visits to different businesses and
Rotary Clubs during her five week stay on
Hokkaido, one of Japan's four main islands. She
also spent an entire day and evening with an
interpreter and the Police Chief of Sapporo,
Hokkaido's largest city. There were many
humorous stories from that experience!
MARIE will once
again embark on another GSE, next year back to
the Philippines as the team leader. She can't wait to return to her
“second home.” It has been a great honor for her
to be a part of Rotary. She is so committed that
she is in line to be president of her club in
two years. Currently she serves as the Hillsboro
Rotary Club's secretary. To say that the
benefits of the Rotary Foundation of Rotary
International and membership in Rotary has had a
profound impact on her life would be an
undestatement.
|
| CLOSING |
MARIE signed a
book for the young reader program, received a
club pen and our warm appreciation.
President Chuck wrapped up by
reminding us that there will be no meeting next
week, but at our next meeting on December 5th we
will finally get to hear Phil Hutchinson's
vocational! He won't be put off again.
We closed with a recitation of the four way
test. Happy Thanksgiving to all!
