ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

McMinnville Rotary Meeting Summary

OPENING

Sharon Larson and  Lee Means were this week's greeters. President Chuck called the meeting to order and asked Ray Fields to present the inspirational moment and Mike McKenzie to lead us in the salute to the flag.

VISITING ROTARIANS AND GUESTS

Jan Hartzell introduced MIKE CARUSO, our District’s Administrative Assistant Governor and frequent visitor to the club. Jan also introduced MARCIA BARAGARY, who recently took over for the retired Carol Benedict in the City of McMinnville Finance Department.

Colin Armstrong introduced KEN TILL, a former aerospace engineer and current Director of Operations at the Evergreen Space Museum.

Gary Eastlund introduced MOLLY WALKER and JIM WALKER, formerly of Gold Beach and now residing in McMinnville.

Bruce Huffman introduced DOUG KOCH and DAVID KOCH, who were visiting the club with their father, none other than our own Ezra Koch.

President Chuck Pattishall noticed that our current Rotary Inbound student, TAMARA BORGES, arrived in time to enjoy lunch, so he naturally made her stand to have her photo taken.

Lynda Wiegan introduced her guest, JULE GRADEK, a manager with the Evergreen Agricultural Division.

Not introduced to the assembled where Bruce Huffman's wife, Ester and Mina Brumfield the wife of Kirby (Mark Twain) Brumfield

MEMBER RECOGNITION, BRAGS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

Darrick Price conducted member recognition. He reminded the membership that Veteran's Day had been observed several days before and asked that all Veterans stand and be recognized.

Russ Rainwater acknowledged the passing of another birthday (37)

Richard Weed happily announced his birthday (he is marginally older than Russ Rainwater)

Russ Rainwater announced that his company (AmeriTitle) was a sponsor of an upcoming rodeo event in Redmond.  Specifically, it is the “Pro Rodeo Circuit Final”, and Russ offered two tickets to anyone who might wish to attend.

Mike Caruso gave a brief report on the upcoming Rotary dental mission to Guatemala.  The organizers of the mission have been approved for a grant of $17,305 by the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International and additional funds are being contributed by District and other clubs in the District.  A planning meeting is scheduled for Thursday November 20th at 7:00 pm in the Newberg Urgent Care facility.

Mike also announced that a “bowl-a-thon” fundraiser is scheduled to take place on December 6th at Walnut City Lanes, the proceeds to assist the Thugz Off Drugs program.  He called attention to sign-up sheets being passed around the room for members who wished to be an event sponsor.

President Chuck Pattishall read a letter from the club’s 2007 Rotary Exchange Student from England, James Gorry.  James is having continued success in his college pursuits, and is planning a visit to McMinnville in the coming year. (see complete letter below)

President Chuck then handed out “Perfect Attendance” certificates to the following (consecutive years of perfect attendance in parentheses for the period ending June 2008.) (1)  Dudley Frost, Erin Stephenson, Russ Rainwater, Jill Methven, Robert Mason, Elise Hui, Al Hansen, and Carol Benedict; (4) John Elliot, (5) Gary Reuter, Van Keck, Jan Hartzell, and Bob Emrick; (6)  Richard Weed, Dan Gardner, Bruce Dixon, and Maureen Chapman; (7)  Ron Benek; (8)  John Larsen, Guy Everingham; (9)  Lee Vasquez; (14) Teresa Smith; (38) Bob Rhoads; (45) Ray Fields; and (50) Norm Goss.

MAIN EVENT

Bruce Stewart introduced the great American humorist Mark Twain (Kirby Brumfield), who provided a very entertaining lecture on his life and his many accomplishments.

Mr. Twain provided many classic anecdotes and stories of his time in various parts of America, notably from his days in California and in Virginia City, Nevada (where he was the newspaper editor).

CLOSING

Following his presentation, Mr. Twain was asked by President Chuck to sign a book for the Early Readers Program. Note:  Mr. Kirby Brumfield, who played Mark Twain, is a longtime Portland resident who recently relocated to McMinnville.  He has performed as Mark Twain for many years, and in fact did a performance at Gallery Theater over twenty years ago.

A Note from James

Chuck, Richard and the ENTIRE Rotary Club of McMinnville,

I realize it has been a very long time since you last heard from me, and recent events in my academic life reminded me just how long it has been, so thought that I should let you all know how I'm doing!

My first year of university flew by! I'm studying English and American Literature at the University of Kent, and whilst everybody else spent the first few months feeling homesick, I was getting out and doing as much as I could (being only 200 miles from home seems like nothing compared to when you spend a year 6000 miles away!). That's one of the great things that you gain from Youth Exchange, that you don't even realize until returning home- the incredible growth in confidence that you gain. I think most of my friends were shocked at just how different I was.

Anyway, my year at university was incredible, I passed my first year with a distinction, which led me to look into transferring onto a 4 year course (most university courses are only 3 years in the UK). To cut a long story short, I will probably be spending my 3rd year of university (the '09-'10 academic year) in the USA.

It's all still in early stages, but out of the 15 or so universities I could choose from, I've started my application with the following 3 universities, in order of preference:

1)University of California

(for which we had to choose 3 campuses, again, in order of preference: (i) Berkeley, (ii) Davis, (iii) UCLA)

2)University of Maryland at College Park

3)University of Massachusetts at Amherst

Right now I am so excited, I feel like I did 2 and a half years ago when I found out I would be spending the year in Oregon, I also know that this excitement will cause the next 10 months to feel like 10 years!

I'm sure I'll come to visit, regardless of where I end up. In fact, my visa should allow me to visit for a few weeks before term starts in August/September. I also imagine that I'll end up visiting during the holiday period. In any case you will definitely all be seeing me!

This e-mail has ended up resembling an essay rather than a quick "Hello". I will keep you all updated with everything, as it happens, and would love to hear how you are all getting on, in my second home, McMinnville (I have been regularly scouring the Club Bulletin... but it's so difficult to see what you've all been up to, via pictures of the Grand Ballroom!).

James Gorry (Rotary Youth Exchange Student '06-'07)

P.S. I now realize just how much I talk about my exchange, as all my new friends at university tell me that about 99% of my anecdotes begin with the phrase "When I was in Oregon...", and that can only mean one thing- I'm still carrying everything that I experienced and all of the stories with me- which I am endlessly glad about! (however, the endless barrage of 'When I was in Oregon...' stories is slowly starting to infuriate them!)

New Member Proposal

The Board of Directors has approved the following for membership:
