ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?

LV Van Blaricom’s daughter is receiving her master’s degree in Human Resources, Development and Training.

Bruce Huffman was recognized for having his picture in the local paper.

President Chuck reminded the club that both the Rotary International Foundation and our local Foundation are worthy of support, and asked the club members to keep up their contributions to both of the foundations throughout the year. We’ve pledged $10,000 to the International Foundation. He passed a hat and suggested we begin a “Pennies for Polio” campaign to help eradicate polio through vaccinations to children in underdeveloped countries. Chuck also announced that there is a scholarship fund available for those members wishing to go to Guatemala on the charitable mission but unable to afford the trip. He reminded all of us to look for the undiscovered treasures in our own backyard and to “mine” our community for its rich resources of people and opportunity.

MAIN EVENT

Past President Ray Fields introduced our speaker Past District Governor Denny Purkey. PDG Denny served as District Governor in the 1992 - 1993 Rotary year. He had the distinction of being the only Rotarian to serve on the RI Presidential nominating committee who had not been an RI Director as he represented  Zone 23

Before starting his presentation to the club, PDG Denny called Paul Elias,
and President Chuck to the podium where PDG Denny had President Chuck place a Paul Harris medallion around Paul's neck and Paul Harris pin in recognition of Paul's reaching the level of Paul Harris Fellow in his donations to The Rotary Foundation of Rotary International. PDG Denny presented Paul with a certificate of recognition.

PDG Denny began his presentation by describing what a one hundred dollar donation to the Rotary Foundation of Rotary International could purchase as he held up elements of prosthesis that can be purchased for both children and adults.
PDG Denny illustrated the elegant simplicity by which children’s lives may be saved from the horror of easily preventable childhood illnesses. It costs $1.35 for a “polio plus six” ampoule of vaccine to be delivered anywhere in the world. He challenged the club to save all spare change during the week and bring it each Friday for the special collection. PDG Denny  has continued to work on behalf of Rotary International. He has made several trips to Romania with NW Medical Teams, working in the orphanages there.

He described the appalling conditions of Romanian orphanages, where infants and children are warehoused with minimal care-giving.

However, on his most recent trip, an entourage of armed militia cheered him at the airport. Apparently a Rotary group had just been there, giving polio and 6 childhood disease vaccinations to all children in country. He said that for the first time ever, he returned from his trip not depressed, but hopeful, finally able to enjoy the holidays with his family because he had seen a real difference in the lives of the children living in the orphanages there.

His presentation was brief and quite moving and was an amplification of Eric’s inspirational  theme of kindness to our fellow human beings.

PDG Denny also informed the club that Rotary meetings in Bucharest typically last 4 hours, with the last hour being given over to presentations. These follow a one-hour break for eating, and drinking from flasks. Presumably, the flask contents make the presentations more enjoyable.

CLOSING

Past President Lee Vasquez, not to be outdone by such references, duly produced a gift basket for PDG Denny, which included wine from Yamhill County Vineyards and delectable chocolates.
(editor's note - PP Lee was club president during PDG Denny's year)

After asking PDG Denny to sign a book, and asking the club to stand and recite the 4-way pledge, President Chuck adjourned the meeting.
