ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

McMinnville Rotary Meeting Summary

OPENING

Greeters:  Brandon Malloy, Van Keck, Tamara Borges

Darrick Price provided the Inspirational Moment.

Bruce Stewart then led the Pledge of Allegiance

VISITING ROTARIANS AND GUESTS

Art Bradley introduced District Governor DR. DENNIS WICKHAM and his wife, ELIZABETH.

Art also introduced SHARON PATTISHALL, wife of our current President, Chuck Pattishall.

Carol Benedict introduced MARCIA BARAGARY, who is not only a fellow Rotarian from Dallas, but also is Carol’s successor at the City of McMinnville.

PAM WATTS was given a warm introduction by her friend Dianne Haugeberg.

Richard Weed introduced our new Rotary Inbound Student TAMARA BORGES, who comes to us from Brazil, and her first host-mother, LESLIE WHISENHUNT.

Bruce Stewart introduced JERRY NELSON, who has recently relocated to McMinnville from Redmond.  Jerry and Bruce were members of the Redmond Rotary Club before they both moved to the Willamette Valley.

MEMBER RECOGNITION, BRAGS AND ANNOUNCEMENTS

With no members present who were celebrating birthdays or anniversaries, Darrick Price moved right into the Brags and Announcements portion of the program. Sharon Larson announced that she wanted a refund for the Linfield football tickets she bought for the Willamette game, as the Wildcats suffered a rare loss to the visiting Bearcats (just what IS a Bearcat, by the way?).  This reporter wryly suggested that she present her case to Linfield President Tom Hellie, seated two tables away. Darrick recognized Carol Benedict (not pictured) for her long years of service with the City of McMinnville.  Carol is joining the honored ranks of the retired effective November 1.

President Chuck announced that there is a need for volunteers to stuff envelopes for the Yamhill County Cultural Coalition on November 4th at the Community Center.  Anyone interested in helping out should simply go the Community Center between 11 am and 5 pm on the 4th. President Chuck also forwarded a request by Dale Tomlinson that volunteers are still being sought for a relief-effort trip to Guatemala in February.  Donations to help support this project are also being requested. Pres. Chuck then introduced our new Rotary Inbound Student, Tamara Borges, and brought her to the podium to say a few words.  Tamara clearly has a fine command of English, and she thanked the Club for hosting her for the coming year.

MAIN EVENT

President Chuck Pattishall introduced current District 5100 Governor, Dr. Dennis Wickham.  DG Dennis opened his talk by telling the membership that the motto for his administration will be “Service With Pride”, and followed this by conferring a couple of awards.  First, he presented a service citation to Jeff Long for his work on the Program Committee.  Prez Chuck accepted the award (a book featuring words of wisdom from Rotary founder Paul Harris) on behalf of Jeff, who was absent.  Next, DG Dennis presented a “World Community Service” citation to the entire club for continuing excellence in service.  President Chuck accepted this award on behalf of the entire club.

DG Dennis then spoke of the programs that he felt would figure prominently during his tenure as District Governor.  He reminded the club that the child mortality rate worldwide was still a staggering figure of 26,000 deaths every day.  In addition to the fight to eradicate polio, he also emphasized the importance of continued relief efforts to bring proper sanitation, literacy, and potable drinking water to third-world populations.

DG Dennis also voiced strong support for the Rotary Foundation, and urged all members to give whatever support they could.   He took time out to personally congratulate the McMinnville Rotary Club for its achievements, including the Dictionary Project, the proposed trip to Guatemala, and its generous support of the Virginia Garcia Clinic and the Willamette Valley Cancer Foundation.

DG Dennis closed by reminding the membership that his motto, “Service With Pride”, means that we should all take pride in the service that we provide as Rotarians, and that by doing so we will continue to make dreams real, both locally and worldwide.

CLOSING

Following his talk, DG Dennis was asked to sign a book for the Early Reader Program by President Chuck. Following the meeting, DG Dennis posed for a photo with our new Rotary Inbound Student, Tamara Borges.
