ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

SOMETHING NEW

"International Service has been a focus of Rotary since the early 1920s. It was Rotary that was the driving force to establish UNESCO. Rotarians were invited to participate in the founding of the United Nations. Rotarians in South America accomplished what governments could not: they literally brought together warring sides in a bitter border conflict between two countries and worked out a peace arrangement. Today, the jewel in our crown is what we call PolioPlus: We have immunized two billion children against polio since 1988.”

Frank Talk I, p. 46

“We should, more than ever before, mobilize government and donors to action, support the activities of the polio plus partners, ensure that hard-to-reach children receive immunization and, if possible, participate in national immunization campaigns.”

Jonathan Majiyagbe, TRF Trustee Chairman- Elect 2008-09

MEMBER RECOGNITION, ANNOUNCEMENTS AND BRAGS

Russ Rainwater conducted member recognition. Absent from out meeting and thus postponing the agony or ecstasy of recognition of birthdays to a future meeting were:Bruce Dickson, Ron Stone, Chris McLaran, and Scott Chambers. Postponing recognition agony or ecstasy for anniversaries to a future meeting were: Steve Larson and Gene Zinda.

Elva Salinas Garcia updated us on the Migrant Camp Outreach Supply Drive.  The Newberg Hospital just announced a major donation. BASEBALL CAPS, new or used, are especially needed.  Donation site: 115 NE May Lane in McMinnville, or contact Elva esalinas@vgmhc.org

Teresa Smith announced the 8th ANNUAL FUNDRAISER BENEFIT FOR THE AMERICAN CANCER SOCIETY which is selling hanging baskets by Country Garden Nursery.  Prepaid orders are $33 for a 12 inch pot filled with a variety of beautiful plants (blooming May to October helped by their slow-release fertilizer).  Pickup is Friday 5/9 (3:00-5:00), or Saturday 5/10 (9:00-1:00) at Citizens Bank, 455 NE Baker Street.  Baskets can be purchased Saturday for $36.00.  Contact Teresa or the Bank at 503-474-9441.

Brent Adams gave us the Rugby Update.  The A team is playing at Delta Park in the final four on Saturday and the B team is play for the championship.

Steve Battaglia noted his son’s successes with the Mac Hi track team.

Kristi Brill gave us her informative-as-usual review of the latest Rotary magazine.  Our International President is concerned about the drop in membership among North American clubs.  (Isn’t it encouraging to see the growth of our own membership!)  One club has organized the collection and implantation of 9,000 pacemakers in Central America—“Pacemakers can be Peacemakers”.  Al Jubitz, owner of the I-5 truck stop has donated $50,000 for the training of international peacemakers.  Kristi noted there was interest at her table about the article on “getting along with difficult people” (hinting that this could have been an immediate, at-the-Rotary-Meeting application).

Richard Weed was called forward to recognize his dependable and very considerable service with our exchange program (he probably spent 30-40 hours this last week).  Thanks Richard for modeling SERVICE ABOVE SELF so very well.

Kourtney Fjelland, Student of the Month, of the Marketing and Business department at Mac Hi as introduced by Kris Olsen.  She was with us four years ago as one of our Four-Way Test Speech Contest speakers.  She is in the top 5% of her graduating class.  She has served in a variety of clubs.  She supervises over 20 students as she manages the Action Corner.  And she has enjoyed considerable success on the Cross Country and Tennis teams.  She is planning to attend OSU this fall.* (Detail of Kourtney's recognition is below)

MAIN EVENT

Linda Shannon, along with help from Donna McGeein, presented “Shared Hope for Healing: De-Mystifying Equine Therapy”.  She noted her pleasure at being with us and our “humanitarian spirit”.  Horses can be used in a variety of therapeutic and developmental ways.  “The outside of a horse is good for the inside of men” observed Winston Churchill. Involvement with animals much larger than ourselves builds self esteem, empowerment, companionship, and endurance. Also we can learn compassion, empathy and trust for involvement with horses.  Involvement with horses builds personal growth, problem solving skills, and patience. Adults and especially children involved with violence and abuse are being aided by a wide variety of horse-based programs.

CLOSING

Linda signed a book for our Early Reader program. Next week, Warden Jeff Thomas of the Federal Correction Institution will be our speaker.
