MAIN EVENT

Ray Fields introduced Vern LaBlanc who, with fellow guest Chuck Dornan, works with Extreme Network Solutions, a company dedicated to providing computer system security for businesses in the area.  The topic of Vern’s presentation was “Network Security Data Loss Backup”, and he began by reporting the sober fact that many organizations are victims of computer hackers, viruses, Trojans, and other forms of criminal mischief which can compromise and corrupt their systems.

Vern advised that all businesses should take careful precautions to inhibit or prevent access to sensitive and/or private files by would-be thieves.  Most suggestions involved common sense, such as protecting passwords, not sharing passwords, and using some originality in the establishment of passwords.  He pointed out that viruses, Trojans, spyware, and malware are threats that can arrive embedded in emails, from infected websites, and from software downloaded from the Internet.

Vern gave some grim statistics on the costs involved in retrieving lost data and fixing corrupted or infected systems, estimated to be in the billions of dollars altogether.

He concluded by strongly advocating a strong and secure program of data backup and the need for qualified and recognized computer security systems for all businesses.
