ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

SOMETHING NEW

Rotary celebrates 103rd anniversary

To celebrate Rotary’s 103rd anniversary on 23 February, Rotary International is placing advertisements in several newspapers highlighting Rotary’s work and achievements. This outreach bolsters the PR efforts of Rotary clubs worldwide that are celebrating the organization’s founding.

The Rotary ads and newspaper supplements will appear in the International Herald-Tribune, the New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, and Tribune publications the Red Eye and Hoy on Friday, 22 February.

The placements include a Rotary supplement highlighting PolioPlus, the Rotary Centers programs, and the benefits of membership.

Rotary’s television public service announcements also are running on all domestic and international United Airlines flights.

OPENING

Always the picture of hospitality, Sheriff Jack Crabtree and new Rotarian Eric Groom welcomed guests and Rotarians alike to the meeting. Pastor John Ailstock led the club in a prayer and Gene Zinda got the meeting off to an official start with the Pledge of Allegiance. President Dan Gardener kept things moving along by asking for the introduction of guests.

VISITING ROTARIANS AND GUESTS

Scott Chambers introduced one of his students, Yang Shi, who is a junior at Linfield.

Jill Methven introduced the club to Jeanne Hermens.

Jess Davis introduced a sea of exchange students—outbound candidates Gia Battaglia and Caity Bernards, Gia’s father Steve and inbound Jessy Guinot. Additionally Jess introduced Molly Waller, a visiting Rotarian from the Gold Beach club.

MEMBER RECOGNITION, ANNOUNCEMENTS AND BRAGS

Next up Russ Rainwater led the club in Member Recognition, starting off by recognizing Kristie Brill for celebrating 27 years of marriage to her husband Thad.

And as it turns out Brian Owen is now over the hill! Happy 40th birthday Brian!!! Brian noted that if he’s 40, that makes his dad Al, well, you guessed it, like super-duper incredibly old. Probably like dirt.

Turning to announcements Al Hansen announced his candidacy as a democrat running for a seat in the District 24 race.

The Good Doctor Dave Pfendler shared with the club that he and his wife are expecting a grand daughter in July.

Fresh back from her honeymoon in Hawaii, Jan Fyant announced that she and Randy Hartzell were married on Valentines Day at sunrise, and that she will now be going by Jan Hartzell.

Dianne Haugeberg was recognized for the birth of her son, Keller Shea, on October 2nd. It’s great to have Dianne back from maternity leave, and to help celebrate her return, and get Keller’s college fund started in style, the club passed the hat and raised $245.

Ray Fields announced that Rotarians are needed to help judge the Four Way Speech Contest on Friday March 14th, from 10:00 to 11:00 AM at Duniway and 2:00 to 3:00 PM at Patton. Please contact Ray if you can help.

President Dan reminded the club that we will be hosting a GSE team from South Korea during the week of April 16th thru the 19th. Volunteers are needed to help with both transportation and entertainment.  If you can help please contact either President Dan or Ray Fields.

Jill Methven gave a short report on her trip to Guatemala on a Rotary project providing dental care to and other services to the needy.  Jill is scheduled to be giving a program on this project the end of March.

MAIN EVENT

And speaking of entertainment, what a program! Deborah Johansen of McMinnville High School introduced ten students who performed three terrific numbers from the musical Godspell, which opens at MHS next weekend. The musical, which was written in 1970 by Stephen Schwartz, takes biblical parables and rolls them into a story about the importance of kindness, told through uplifting songs. The students did an amazing job bringing the theater to Rotary!

CLOSING

Finally, to close the meeting, Mayor (and Rotarian) Ed Gormley declared February 23 as ‘Rotary Day’ in McMinnville, in appreciation for the many services that Rotary provides for the community. The proclamation was presented at the McMinnville City Council meeting on February 12th. You can read the entire proclamation by clicking on the image at the right. When it opens in a new browser window, click on it to get it to full readable size.

What a great way to end the meeting!

President Dan then had Mayor Gormley sign a book to be presented to McMinnville's Early Reader Program.

"When meeting day comes around, I do not have to decide whether to attend or not, for that has already been decided for me . . . it was one of the obligations I accepted when I joined Rotary." -- A Rotarian
