ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

SOMETHING NEW

Rotarians should be aware of a new scam e-mail claiming that the recipient is a winner of a cash grant. The e-mail claims the recipient’s name was randomly chosen from a database, and the recipient did not enter a contest. The recipient is then asked to contact a fake RI staff member to provide information and claim the grant. The scam e-mail has been sent from numerous e-mail addresses, and the recipient is asked to contact staff in locations outside of the United States.

Rotary International does not solicit funds through e-mail, nor does it ask that personal information be updated by e-mail or other electronic means. RI encourages Rotarians and Rotary clubs to avoid becoming victims of such scams by deleting any e-mail that appears suspicious.

OPENING

President-elect Chuck Pattishall presided today due to President Dan Gardner’s unannounced absence.  (Be ready next week for what will surely be President Dan’s good explanation!)  Russ Peak and Ryan Arzner served as greeters, the Iinspirational moment was provided by  John Larsen who reminded us of the wide umbrella of Rotary’s opportunities and service. The pledge was led by  Lori Rumbaugh.

VISITING ROTARIANS AND GUESTS

Bruce Stewart (in the process of transferring his membership to our club) was introduced by Bruce Wyatt.

Kris Olsen introduced Bob Wolfe and Sandra Davis Wolf parents of student of the month Rebecca Wolf and Kourtney Kugler and her dad Ken Kugler.

Bruce Dickson introduced Eric Groom and Ray Fields introduced Elva Salinas-Garcia both soon-to-be new members were guests of the club.

Outbound students Caity Bernards and Gia Battaglia and our exchange student Jessey Guinot (from France and his friend Gerome Henrion from Belgium) enjoyed being at a table together and were recognized by President -elect Chuck.

McMINNVILLE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS OF THE MONTH

Kris Olsen introduced the McMinnville High School students of the month.  Rebecca Wolfe was selected by the Art Department.  She has been involved in virtually all of the art classes the high school offers.  She plans to attend Chemeketa and then go on and get a business degree.  Courtney Kubler was selected by the Music Department.  In addition to her very outstanding academic work, and service activities (officer in Twilighters), she is only one of two graduating seniors (both women) to have earned letters in three sports during all of her four years in high school.  Principal Kris noted that 12 letter athletes are very rare these days. (*See below for the full recognitions,)

President-elect Chuck observed how enjoyable it has been for him to be involved in our high school Interact Club which is “involved in many good things these days”.

MEMBER RECOGNITION, ANNOUNCEMENTS AND BRAGS

President-elect Chuck related a message from Corey Graham’s family that remembrances on her behalf should go to our McMinnville Rotary Foundation account.  You could give your check to any of our officers.  Before finding out that PE Chuck would be standing in for President Dan,  Ryan  had contacted him to do member recognition to which he agreed. Missing for recognition for his anniversary was Ed Gormley.  And also missing was Nicole Wahlberg who recently celebrated a birthday.

Russ Rainwater was the high bidder for our last remaining Rotary tee shirt brought by Past President Steve Larson.  Thanks Russ!

Bruce Wyatt reminded us of the celebration this next Wednesday (January 30) when Linfield will celebrate its 150th anniversary.  Gather at 3:00 at First Baptist Church, the initial location of the College and then proceed (walking, carriages, and cars) to Melrose auditorium for a special convocation at 4:00.  All are welcome.  Think about this—when have you had the opportunity to celebrate 150 years of anything, especially in Yamhill County?  Linfield started only 45 years after Lewis & Clark visited the Oregon Territory!!!

MAIN EVENT

Once again this year our Club was fortunate to enjoy a concert by our high school Twilighters.   Director Dana Libonati and his musicians regularly garner regional and even national recognition.  At a recent competition in New York he was asked how he could have such consistently solid musicians from such a small community.

CLOSING

President-elect Chuck presented Dana with a McMinnville Rotary Club pen and asked him to sign a book to be donated to SMART (Start Making a Reader Today) in his name. He reminded us that next week will be a club assembly.

McMINNVILLE HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS OF THE MONTH

It’s my pleasure to introduce to you one of McMinnville High School’s student-of-the-month for January, senior Rebecca Wolfe, representing the Visual Arts. Rebecca is the daughter of Robert Wolfe Jr. and Sandra Davis-Wolfe. Rebecca attended Columbus and Grandhaven Elementary Schools (4th & 5th grade) and Patton Middle School before enrolling at McMinnville High School in her freshman year. This semester, she is enrolled in Ceramics, Senior English, Clothing Workshop, Advanced Placement Studio Art, and Watercolor. While in high school, Rebecca has been involved in our school’s many art related activities.  She is a member of the Art Club and has taken every art course available, including this year’s Watercolor course and Photography to broaden her skills and experiences. Outside of school, Rebecca is involved in jewelry making with her mother, specifically bead and wirework (necklaces and earrings).  She enjoys crafts like knitting and producing abstract stuff with art, and enjoys drawing in her free time. Her future plans include attending Chemeketa Community College and then on to a four-year institution where she’d like to obtain a Business Degree and eventually open an arts & crafts retail store. Rebecca’s best memories of high school are the senior entrances at homecoming, and all that she has been able to learn through her art experiences at MHS.

It’s my pleasure to introduce to you one of McMinnville High School’s student-of-the-month for January, senior Kourtney Kugler, representing Vocal Music. Kourtney is the daughter of Ken and Vickie Kugler.  She has an older brother, Kelson (21), a 2004 graduate of McMinnville High School. Kourtney attended Newby Elementary and Duniway Middle School before enrolling at McMinnville High School in her freshman year. Kourtney currently holds a 3.86 weighted grade point average, she has been on honor roll each semester throughout her high school career, and has completed the requirements of her Certificate of Initial Mastery.  This semester, she is enrolled in Symphonic Choir, Advanced Placement Statistics, Journalism, Advanced Placement European History, The Twilighters, Microbiology, and French IV. While in high school, Kourtney has been involved in our school’s many activities.  She is a four year, three sport athlete in volleyball, basketball and softball (one of only two in her senior class).  She was a 1st team all-league setter in volleyball, is the Vice-President of The Twilighters, Secretary of the Interact Club, member of the National Honor Society, Crazy Devoted Fans, and mentor in the Link Crew. Outside of school, Kourtney helps in her church nursery and Sunday School, works on activities through her church, and enjoyed being a camp counselor during the summer. Her future plans include making application to Whitworth College, George Fox University, the University of Portland, and Oregon State University, where she plans to major in Chemistry.  She’d like to utilize her degree to either teach or pursue a career as a Pharmacist. Kourtney’s best memories of high school are homecoming and the dances, being a member of a team through her pursuits in athletics, and the great teachers she has had while at MHS.
