ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

SOMETHING NEW

Understanding will make difference in ending world poverty

A basic understanding of poverty is the inspiration Rotarians need to eradicate it, keynote speaker Deepa Willingham said during the second spouses plenary session at the International Assembly.

Willingham, a member of the Rotary Club of Santa Ynez Valley, California, USA, told the audience that 1.3 billion people around the world live on less than US$1 a day and that 10 million children die each year before they reach their fifth birthday due to extreme poverty. “I find these numbers staggering and overwhelming. My heart aches with sadness,” she said.

OPENING

Always the picture of hospitality, Bruce Wyatt and Jeff Stevenson welcomed guests and Rotarians alike to a ‘flash back’ meeting, held at the Community Center. Derek Price led the club in an invocation and Mary Alice Russell got the meeting off to an official start with the Pledge of Allegiance.  President Dan kept things moving along by asking for the introduction of guests.

VISITING ROTARIANS AND GUESTS

Dale Tomlinson introduced visiting Rotarian and prospective member Bruce Stewart, of the Redmond Rotary Club.

Bruce Huffman introduced another visiting Rotarian, Molly Walker, a member of the Gold Beach Club.

Al Owen introduced Laverne and Shirley—A.K.A Outbound exchange students Gia Bataglia and Caity Bernards.

And finally, Eric Groom, manager of the new Comfort Suites, was introduced by Brent Adams.

MEMBER RECOGNITION, ANNOUNCEMENTS AND BRAGS

Next up Walt Haight led the club in Member Recognition,

He started off by recognizing Bruce Huffman for an anniversary. Bruce said he has had four amazing wonderful years with is wife.

It turns out Brent Adams is half a century. Happy Birthday Brent!

Chris McLaran announced the birth of a healthy 9lb 7 oz son, and the club passed the hat in his honor to raise funds for Baby McLaran’s college education.

Brent paid Steve Larson a compliment by saying he went above and beyond when helping a Mid-Valley staff member with a question. Steve looked pleased by the recognition.

It was pointed out that several members of the Rotary family were honored at the recent Galley Theater awards, including Jeff Sargent, Emma Pattishall (Chuck’s daughter) and Walt Haight, who won best actor in a comedy.

After all the brags had been aired, Kristi Brill updated the club on the accomplishments of Rotary International as reported in The Rotarian.

Always an exciting moment, Past President Art Bradley helped to induct new Rotarian Russ Peak, who was sponsored by none other than Mr. Rotary Recruiter himself, Ryan Arzner.

And finally, the Club’s own Mary Alice Russel provided a wonderful program on the planned construction projects funded by the most recent school bond.
