1. Is it the TRUTH?

OPENING

Greeters:  Elise Hui, Brandon Malloy

President Dan Gardner called the meeting to order at 12:12, and asked for a moment of silence in memory of Cory Graham, who died this past week from injuries sustained in a vehicular accident in Salem.  Dan then offered a heartfelt prayer for Cory, her family, and her many friends.  As Dan correctly intoned, Cory will be missed by everyone, and her passing leaves a profound and sad impact on all our hearts.

John Swenson followed the tribute to Cory by leading the membership in the Pledge of Allegiance

Sharon Larson introduced ELVA SALINAS-GARCIA, Outreach Coordinator at the Virginia Garcia Clinic.

Guy Everingham introduced CAMERON SCHMIDT, a recent recipient of the Service Above Self Scholarship.

MEMBER RECOGNITION, ANNOUNCEMENTS AND BRAGS

John Larsen conducted member recognition. He started by recognizing what he initially thought were three members all married to persons named Ann until he realized that what his list was referring to was their wedding anniversary and not the name of their spouse.

Kris Olsen happily announced his 17th wedding anniversary with his wife, Sue.

Tom Hellie acknowledged 21 years of marriage to his wife, Julie Olds.

Art Bradley also noted his 21st wedding anniversary with his wife, Brenda.

Guy Everingham was singled out for another birthday

Al Owen also noted a birthday, and made a heartfelt plea for contributions from the membership to help fund his retirement.  His request was met with stony silence.

Jeff Stevenson happily announced that he and his wife were recently promoted to Instructors with the Child Abuse Prevention Center.

Darrick Price provided details about his new daughter, who arrived on December 31st, just before midnight.  John Larson “passed the hat” for young Ada Lee Price, and $139.00 was collected for her future education.

LYNN BRYSON, a past member of our club, offered his condolences for Cory Graham.

MAIN EVENT

Ray Fields introduced Prof. Tanya Tompkins, Assistant Professor of Psychology at Linfield College.

Prof. Tompkins gave a presentation on the Yamhill County Suicide Prevention Coalition.  She opened by thanking the Faculty Development Committee, Dana Noonan from Oregon Public Health, key members of the Suicide Prevention Coalition and the Commission for Children and Family Services, and participating schools in the Yamhill County area.

She pointed out a couple of interesting statistics.  Suicide currently ranks 2nd as the cause of death for Oregononians between the ages of 10 and 24.  She also pointed out that suicide rates generally increase with age.  Membership in the Coalition was re-constituted in 2005 after 3 youth suicides in the Yamhill County area

The Mission/Goals of the Coalition are as follows:

  1. Raise Community Awareness

  2. Prevention and Intervention

  3. Youth Education

Among the methods for raising community awareness, Prof. Tompkins announced that a program that focuses on suicide prevention will soon be airing on MCM 11, McMinnville’s public access television station.

One of the major keys to prevention and intervention is the training of “gatekeepers”, specialists who can recognize signs that an individual may be contemplating suicide.

One of the methods cited as part of youth education is the re-introduction of the Columbia Teen Screen, a process that is designed to elevate awareness of suicide among students.

CLOSING

Following her talk, Prof. Tompkins was asked to sign a book that is part of the Early Reading Program at the McMinnville Public Library, and was given a commemorative Rotary pen by President Dan. Because Randy McCreith's blue badge was not available for presentation last week following  Randy's presentation, President Dan Called Randy forward to receive his blue badge.  President Dan then adjourned the meeting.

NOTE: The January 18th meeting will be held at the Community Center
