ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

What Paul Harris Said

December 16 2007

"We must help all nations in distress and raise the standards of living of the lowly. If we steadfastly pursue this course, prosperity such as we have never enjoyed before will be ours, the wheels of industry will be kept turning, and all nations will be friends.

What a blessing it would be to live in a friendly world, where all nations are good neighbors! ".

"Fear and Hate Must Go" by Paul P Harris July 1946

President Dan thanked Chuck Pattishall and Jan Fyant for presiding over the past two meetings in his absence.

Norm Goss came forward to honor his 50 (yes, fifty) years of perfect attendance.  President Dan gave Norm a clock recognizing “Fifty Years of Perfect Attendance and Service”.   Norm had been asked by Dan to share with us some of Norm’s memorable moments.  PLEASE READ NORM’S COMMENTS APPENDED AT THE END OF THIS PACESETTER.  His comments were followed by a very enthusiastic standing ovation.  President Dan thanked Norm “for these comments which were an inspiration to all of us”.

program

Our McMinnville High School Symphonic Choir was introduced by Superintendent Maryalice Russell.  We heard beautiful renditions of: O Holy Night, Jesus Christ Was Born On Christmas Day (in a Calypso rendition), Gloria in Excelius Deo (in a Kenyan rendition), and Peace on Earth Good Will to All Men.  Members seemed to especially appreciate having these young artists completely surrounding the room.  Our high school folks are terrific!!!  Following their last number we expressed our appreciation in a enthusiastic standing ovation.

MEMBER RECOGNITION, BRAGS &

Member Recognition was conducted by Russ Rainwater

Recognition could NOT go to Dick Ecker, Rosemari Davis, Kris Olsen, and Steve Macy as all WERE ABSENT TODAY.

Gene Zinda recently celebrated a birthday and made an appropriate donation.

President Dan shared a brag.  The Marine Corps annually recognizes leading programs teaching water safety.  His True Form company was the only company in Oregon nominated for the award.

Eric Hanson bragged about the addition of a new grandchild to his family.

Chuck Pattishall reminded us that all members are welcome to attend our Board meetings.  Consult our web site for dates and times.  Doing so can count as an attendance makeup.

Colin Armstrong (sitting near the entry way) rose to introduce late arrival Carolyn Tomlinson.  Then, across the room, Dale Tomlinson rose to “donate $5 for Carolyn”.

Tom Vail (member of the Morning Club) noted that Norm Goss had been so faithful in doing makeups at the Morning Club that Norm should be an honorary member.

NORM's NOTES

My 50+ Years In Rotary

“Got Any ID?”

About What?

Today is the first day of my 51st year in McMinnville Rotary!

First Experience: 9-28-45 during Dr. Avard Whitman’s presidency.  In about 1930, McMinnville Rotary was first club to invite HS ASB president to meetings for the year: Ez Koch (and maybe Milt Robins) were earlier cases.  Not sure when ASLC pres. began.  Other LC faculty were members, and first met Dr. Albert R. Miller (Bert), local optometrist and alumnus of LACO, who later was involved in my acceptance to LACO.  Meetings were on the second floor of the Wright building, above where the Sage restaurant is now located.  The membership goal was adopted at 40 on 9-28-45, and reached 46 during the year.

1954-56 at LACO, followed by LA County Gen. Hosp. Eye Clinic from Oct. 1, ’56 to Sept. 30, ’57.  Proceeded to McMinnville to assume Dr. Miller’s practice, arriving Oct. 3, the day Russia launched Sputnik into orbit – a memorable day on TWO accounts!

After proposal by Bert, was inducted on 12-13-57 when Glen Macy was president.  My memory recalls meetings were in Hudson’s Restaurant, east of the Mack Theater.  Later meetings were in the Crandall House.

I served as Secretary of the club in ’59-’60 (Pres. Craig Singletary); ’71-’72 (Pres. Jack Price); ’72-’73 (Pres. Jerry Sherwood);  and ’81-’82 with Milt Robins (Pres. Gary Worrell).

After various other offices, I became pres. for the ’64-’65 year.  During the year we moved to Michelbook C.C. from Crandall House.  The RI theme for the year was “Live Rotary” and we had 64 active members and eight Senior Actives.

We sponsored the Harlem Globetrotters (for the 7th time) and made $650; our total to R.I. Foundation reached $1,430 since 1947.

A lowlight of the year was the death of my younger brother, Capt. Richard D. Goss, at Bien Hoa, VN, on Aug, 29, 1964, while giving night takeoff and landing instruction to a Vietnamese student pilot.

In checking the records I find Ez Koch joined on 2-8-46, Al Beeler joined on 10-21-49, and I joined on 12-13-57.  We are the senior members of the club.

During my early years a Newberg Rotarian, Doug Dickey,  frequently visited to keep his 25 years of perfect attendance intact.  I found it hard to believe!  However, my schedule allowed me to makeup absences, and over the years I have passed Doug.  Visiting other clubs has been interesting and stimulating.  I recommend it to all the members.

In closing, I recall the story of the cowboy who remarked to the redhead that when his time came, he wanted to die with his boots on.  She answered “Well, better get ‘em on cowboy.  Here comes my husband.”)
