ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

SOMETHING NEW

Celebrate World Interact Week 5-11 November

During World Interact Week, Interactors and Rotarians worldwide commemorate the charter of the first Interact club in 1962. By completing four designated projects, Interact clubs and their Rotary club sponsors can receive special recognition from RI.

World Interact Week projects:

1) Give a presentation, or write an inspiring letter about Interact, to a Rotary club that doesn’t sponsor an Interact club.

2) Invite Rotarians to an Interact club meeting.

3) Invite Interactors to a weekly Rotary club meeting.

4) Conduct a joint Rotary/Interact project to increase awareness of Interact in the community.

opening

Always the picture of hospitality, Jon Triest and Wayne Bailey welcomed guests and Rotarians alike to the Club’s second meeting at the Grand Ballroom.

Longtime Rotarian Dan Corrigan started the meeting with an invocation, followed by the Pledge led by President Dan Gardner.

President Dan got the meeting officially under way by calling for the introduction of guests.

VISITING ROTARIANS AND GUESTS

Russ Peak was introduced by Ryan Arzner as a ‘presentation guy’. Perhaps that’s a new vocational classification for membership?

Out bound exchange students Caity Bernards and Gia Battaglia were introduced to the club by John Ailstock. Gia is hoping to be assigned a year in Italy, while Caity is angling to spend a year in Eastern Europe.

Erin Stephenson introduced Krista McCallum of Sotto Marketing and Bradley Ceramics as the woman behind First Federal’s advertising campaigns.

Art Bradley introduced guest of the club, and soon to be newly anointed Rotarian, Stephanie Jensen.

MEMBER RECOGNITION &  BRAGS

Next up, Ryan Arzner led the club in the fastest ever round of member recognition. Apparently no Rotarians have a birthday or anniversary this time of year. Ryan did delight the Club, however, with a lovely little Halloween story about sibling affection. . . Be sure to ask him if you missed it!

Brent Adams was quick to fill the void with a wonderful announcement that Mid-Valley has won a government contract to make repair kits for the Navy.

Brandon Malloy threw twenty dollars in the pot to make three announcements (we must owe him seventeen more in the future):

  1. Eric Hansen must be having a good year, because apparently he gives out king sized candy bars on Halloween.
  2. Brandon got engaged this week. (Congratulations!)
  3. THE DUCKS PLAY SATURDAY!!!!!

THE DUCKS BEAT
THE UNBEATEN SUN DEVILS
35 TO 23
GO DUCKS!!!

ANNOUNCEMENTS

The induction of a new Rotarian is always an exciting event—especially when that Rotarian is a masseuse! Art Bradley inducted new member Stephanie Jensen into the Club, and presented her with her Rotary pin. As her past employer, Art promised the Club that Stephanie would bring real energy to all aspects of her service.

Next, President Dan recognized all those Rotarians who have sponsored new Rotarians into the Club over the last year, and presented them with a special pin from RI.

And as we all know, December is election time for in the Rotary Club of McMinnville for the board and President Nominee. Nominations are as follows:

  • Vice-President/President Nominee: Bruce Dickson
  • Board Members: Paul Elias; Russ Rainwater; Ryan Arzner; Jack Crabtree; Richard Weed; and John Elliot.

Nominations will be open from the floor during the month of November with the election taking place during the first meeting in December.

Finally, President Dan raised the issue of the venue change to the Grand Ballroom, and indicated that a final decision on the location of our meetings would be made in the upcoming week. Next week’s meeting will be in the Grand Ballroom however.

program

Moving on to the main event, Ray Fields introduced our program, Tatsuki Kawaguchi, a Rotary Ambassadorial Scholar from Japan. Tatsuki, in addition to many other honors, is the Associate Program Coordinator at Portland State for the Special Program’s Office, where he is working on a Master’s Degree in teaching English as a second language.

Tatsuki gave a fascinating program on the way that Rotary has effected his life, covering topics ranging from his experiences with RYLA to his role in founding Rotaract at Portland State University. He explained the importance of rethinking the way that English is taught in Japan, and how he hopes that his time in the United States will prepare him to make a difference in this area.

Additionally, Tatsuki gave the club an overview of the three types of Rotary Ambassadorial Scholarships:

  • Cultural Ambassadorial Scholarships: A six month intense language study and cultural immersion.
  • Academic Year Ambassadorial Scholarships: The oldest and largest part of the program, which spans academic year.
  • Multi-year Ambassadorial Scholarship: Two years of degree oriented study.

Through these programs, Rotary has sponsored over 30,000 Ambassadorial Scholars since 1947.

CLOSING

To thank Tatsuki for speaking to the Club, President Dan presented him with a book to donate to the early reader program as well as a Rotary pen. President Dan then announced that the program for next week would be Thugz Off Drugz, and that a final decision on the venue for the meetings would be made at that time. Meeting adjourned.
