ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

SOMETHING NEW

What Paul Harris Said
www.whatpaulharrissaid.org
in his address to the RI Convention in Nice, France 1937

" But behold these are greater wonders: a transformation little short of miraculous has taken place in that supposedly sterile soil, the flower of friendship has taken root. What about the many points of difference between the members of such clubs, have they been removed? No, none of them have been removed. The Mohammedan is still a Mohammedan. The Buddhist still a Buddhist; the Christian still a Christian, but what does that matter? They are friends, all friends. Heretofore they have always thought ill of each other, that is over now. Friendship has spread a mantle of charity and tolerance over all these extreme differences. In common sense and good conscience it no more matters what my friend's religion is than what the color of his hair or eyes."

President Dan Gardner reminded the membership that our next two meetings will be held at the Grand Ballroom on 3rd Street

Walter Haight then concluded the Brags & Announcements portion of the meeting by telling a joke which earned him a withering look from most of the assembled members and guests.

program

Ray Fields introduced Meghan Bromert, who spent two years in Chile as a Rotary Ambassador Scholarship recipient.  Originally from Florida, Meghan spent two years in China teaching English after earning her undergraduate degree, and also spent time in Honduras before being awarded the Ambassador Scholarship.

She cited several important aspects of the scholarship program:

  • studying and developing a knowledge of cultural differences
  • developing interaction with Rotary Clubs in Chile, of which there are many
  • learning to challenge stereotypes that Chileans have for Americans, and vice versa

While attending school in Chile, Meghan was involved in several Rotary projects, including RYLA conference planning, food/clothing/school supply drives, a project that was Chile’s equivalent to Habitat for Humanity, and time spent as an interpreter for RI past-president Glen Estes.

Meghan traveled extensively throughout Chile, from the rainless Atacama Desert in the north to remote Punta Arenas, the world’s southernmost city.  Her slides showed the incredible diversity of geography that characterizes Chile.  She also visited Peru, Brazil, and Argentina during her stay.

Meghan earned a Master’s Degree in International Studies during her time in Chile and her future plans are to work abroad, and to continue her involvement with Rotary International.

CLOSING

President Dan thanked our speaker and asked her to sign a book to be presented in her name to McMinnville's Early Reader Program. She was also presented the McMinnville Rotary pen.
