ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

SOMETHING NEW

WHAT PAUL HARRIS SAID

"Since the beginning of civilization, there has been a surplus of sayers of things. If there is any one particular in which I would have Rotary distinguished from other organizations, it is in the quality of character which results in the doing of things." Paul Harris, Message to the 1921 RI Convention in Edinburgh, Scotland. http://www.whatpaulharriswrote.org/rotarian/1921message.htm

John Larsen announced that the “First Fed Shred” will be held next week, where visitors can bring any documents they wish to have shredded.  Call John at his business number for details of this event.  John also mentioned that our Rotary bell had been updated with the engraved names of recent club presidents, including our current President, Dan Gardner.  Finally, John happily announced that Dianne Haugeberg had given birth to a healthy boy on October 1st, named Keller.

Norm Goss announced that on this date 50 years ago, Sputnik 1 was launched by the Soviet Union, inaugurating the Space Age.  More importantly, however, this date in 1957 also marked Norm’s return to McMinnville, where he has resided ever since.

Cory Graham happily announced that her brother survived a “super attack” of asthma, almost taking his life.  He actually stopped breathing for a short time.  Doctors, fearing that he may have sustained some brain damage, asked him his name when he woke from a coma.  When he said “George Bush”, everyone instantly knew that he was fine.

Randy McCreith announced that the Marshall Building was finally open after several years of construction.  Randy went on to mention that he felt very fortunate to have discovered the many opportunities available in McMinnville after living here for the past 17 years.

Ray Fields announced that the highly successful Dictionary Project from last year is in the works again.  A meeting to attach nameplates to this year’s collection of dictionaries is to be held on Thursday, October 11th at Golden Valley Brew Pub at 6:00 pm.  Ray  also shared that the university in Uganda that is receiving college text books that we collected from Linfield is in need of hard drives for their computers. If you have any hard drives you would like to donate, please contact him.

Maryalice Russell introduced Tony Vicknair, Assistant Principal at McMinnville High School and Coordinator of the Career Pathways program.  Tony gave a presentation on this ambitious project, which is designed to give students an opportunity to focus on their goals for future careers and degree programs.  By offering guidance and providing opportunities for students to earn college-level credit in high school, Tony asserted that students will receive a good kick-start on their post-school lives.  The list of programs available to students is long, and includes Environmental Sciece, Business Management, Criminal Justice, and Fire & Emergency Service, just to name a few.
