ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

SOMETHING NEW

Why I Am a Rotarian

September 2nd 2007

I am a Rotarian because:

-         The world is not Polio free... yet.  But, Rotary is still in action to eradicate it.

-         People in Honduras, Africa, and other underdeveloped countries die every day from unclean water. But, Rotary is helping to provide clean water filtration devices to those people.

-         Close to 1 billion people lack the most basic literacy and numeric skills. But, Rotary is helping to educate those through literacy programs.

-         Nearly 1.3 billion people live in extreme poverty. But, Rotary is helping to provide those folks with opportunities to enhance their lives.

-         Our world is not at peace. But, Rotary is educating young leaders on Mediation Skills and Peace and Conflict Resolution.

-         When there is a need, Rotary responds. That's why I'm a Rotarian.

Past President,

MEMBER RECOGNITION &  ANNOUNCEMENTS

Russ Rainwater stepped up to conduct member recognition for the missing Ryan Arzner.

Eric Hanson was recognized for a wedding anniversary, his 31st.

Tom Tankersley happily announced 35 years of marriage.  Interestingly, both Eric and Tom celebrated their anniversaries by traveling to Ashland and the Shakespearean Festival.

Waldo Farnham reluctantly admitted to having a birthday.

Jesse Guinot was recognized for having a birthday on September 2nd.

Mary Alice announced her upcoming birthday on the 3rd.  She suggested that the person responsible for keeping track of birthdays and anniversaries be fined, an idea endorsed by all.  Sadly, Ryan Arzner was not present to be shaken down.

Brent Adams happily announced the first Oregon State football victory of the season.  He called upon Erin Stephenson to agree to their annual wager regarding the upcoming Civil War game.  Erin gladly accepted the challenge and, as the game will be played at Autzen Stadium, she immediately began making plans for suitable Duck clothing for Brent.

Dan Gardner and Teresa Smith presented checks to representatives of the Virginia Garcia Memorial Clinic and the Willamette Valley Cancer Foundation, said monies having been raised during the Wine & Art Auction in early July.

Will Neuhauser accepted a check for $64,500 on behalf of the Virginia Garcia Clinic.  Will thanked the club, and extended a special thanks to Lee and Erma Vasquez for their part in organizing the Wine & Art Auction.

Kelly McGraw accepted a check for $35,100 on behalf of the Willamette Valley Cancer Foundation. She also extended a heartfelt thank you to the club, and announced that the Cancer Foundation will benefit greatly from this gift.

President Dan Gardner added that $23,000 was raised for the Club itself. The money will go into  the Rotary Club of McMinnville Foundation to be used to fund club projects including scholarships. President Dan went on to thank Harvest Fresh for providing the lunch for this meeting.

program

Dan Gardner introduced Marcia Bagnall who, through Chemeketa Community College’s Small Business Development Center, administers a program called MERIT (MicroEnterprises Resources, Initiatives, and Training).  Marcia gave a presentation on the purpose and function of MERIT, which helps small businesses become established, and provides training services to help new businesses succeed.  This non-profit program receives funding from Yamhill County, and the Cities of Dallas, Independence, Monmouth, and Salem.  Some interesting facts about MERIT:

  • Two-thirds of the applicants are women

  • 53% of the successful programs end up with the business owners being elevated from poverty status

  • An average of $13,000 dollars in income is the result of successful business ventures assisted by MERIT

Marcia concluded her talk by asking the membership to keep MERIT in mind when we meet people who are interested in starting a small business.

CLOSING

President Dan closed the meeting by thanking our speaker for her presentation and having her sign a book to be donated in her name to McMinnville's Early Reader Program.
