ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

SOMETHING NEW

What Paul Harris Said

In The Rotarian, 1945

I like to think that the pioneering days of Rotary have just begun. What’s 40 years in the life of a great Movement? There are just as many new things to be done as ever there were. Kaleidoscopic changes are taking place, many of them without our will. Even to hang to the fringe of this fast-changing world is about all most of us can do. Rotary must simply continue to pioneer or be left in the rear of progress.”

Even now, over 60 years later, Paul Harris’ words still have meaning as today there are still so many new things to be done and some promises that have to be kept. By keeping up with the fast changing world, Rotary will remain the progressive force it always has been.

Whatever new challenges we set ourselves, we must never forget our unfulfilled promises such as the complete eradication of polio. If every district allocates 10% of its available DDF for this year to the PolioPlus Partners Program, we can reach the $5 million goal needed to fund National Immunization Days in India, Pakistan and Nigeria and fulfill our commitment. That's one of our 2007/08 Rotary Foundation pledges we CAN achieve.

Remember what Paul Harris said -we must all strive to be PIONEERS on the long road to peace.

Elise Hui introduced Darrick Price.

Austin Wuellner, recently returned from his stint in Guatemala, was introduced by John Swenson.

Guy Everingham gave a brief report on the selection of Rotary scholarship recipients.  McMinnville High School had 12 student winners, 3 are from Dayton, and one each from Gaston and Yamhill.  Three of the winners were with him today:  Kaitlyn Paysinger (Dayton H.S., going to Linfield), Rebecca Noble (McM H.S., going to OSU), and Spencer Floyd (McM H.S., going to American University in Rome, Italy).

John Wakeman was hosted by Art Bradley

MEMBER RECOGNITION & announcements

Brian Owens substituted quite well for vacationing Ryan Arzner.  (Fortunately, Brian spared us the aggravation stirred by Ryan’s consistently-inaccurate, “Good Morning”.)

Frank Bumpus recently celebrated his 44th anniversary with Kathie , “still my best friend”.

Teresa Smith celebrated her 20th anniversary

Enjoying a recent birthday was John Ailstock.

Cindy de las Heras celebrated her 18th anniversary.

Austin Wuellner asked for any leads on a used car.

Nicole Wahlberg noted some changes in the films at the Evergreen IMAX theater.  For a complete listing go to    sprucegoose.com

Lee Vasquez asked for volunteers to help with the CARLTON WALK IN THE PARK, August 4 & 5 (Saturday and Sunday).  He is asking on behalf of Ken Wright one of the major organizers.  Ken was extremely generous in donating many wine magnums for our auction (which generated several thousands of dollars for us).  Ken refused all our offers to pay for even some of Ken’s many donations to us.  Ken’s only request was that OUR CLUB PROVIDE SOME VOLUNTEES for the WALK IN THE PARK.  Lee circulated some signup sheets.  CONTACT LEE IF YOU CAN HELP EITHER DAY.

Bruce Huffman put in $5 for the brag he shared in the Inspirational Moment about his grandson getting a teaching/coaching job.

President Dan put in the check “I forgot last week”.Our thoughts and prayers go out to Carolyn and Dale Tomlinson.  Son Mike passed away last Monday.  Mike was a very highly regarded and widely recognized teacher.

President Dan read a letter from former member Mike Strange now living in AZ.  Mike led our efforts culminating in the Rotary Nature Preserve.  He has been a major coordinator in a local Rotary project there.  “Things are going very well, I can wear shorts and sandals year-round here, like I did in OR.”

Ray Fields presented a proposal from the District.  RI Council on Legislation passed an enactment that a representative from each of the 34 international zones come together to select the International President.  Currently representatives from half of the zones are involved in the process and then the other half are represented for the selection of the next President.  The cost of this new proposal is extensive; it would double the current cost  to bring representatives together from all the zones.  Our Board and the District both recommended that we vote down this enactment.  In keeping with this recommendation we voted to repeal this enactment on a motion by President Dan and seconded by Brent Adams.

President Dan gave out Perfect Attendance certificates.  One Year certificates went to: Diane Haugeberg, Wayne Bailey, Bruce Dickson, Jeff Long.  Other awardees were: John Elliott (3 years), Van Keck (4), Jan Fyant (4), Richard Weed (5), Jon Triest (5), President Dan (5), Maureen Chapman (5), John Larsen (7), Guy Everingham (7), Brent Adams (7), Lee Vasquez (8), Steve Larson (8), Art Bradley (8), Colin Armstrong (8), Teresa Smith (13), Bob Rhoads (37), Ray Fields (44), and our GRAND CHAMPION Norm Goss (49 years).

Past-President Art took care of a loose end from the Demotion Dinner, giving President Dan his President’s Pin.

MAIN EVENT

New member, Brandon Malloy shared some observations about himself.  He grew up along the banks of the Nestucca River, was involved in a ceramic shop on 3rd St. with his mother. He attended Chemeketa CC and UO (where he helped clean the locker room for the basketball team).  After managing Gold’s Gyms in Springfield and McMinnville he is now working for Express Personnel.  They serve 250 businesses and helped 2,500 people last year gain employment.  He has visited every baseball stadium on the W Coast, enjoys poker and whether he needs it or not gets only 3 haircuts per year.

President Dan gave him the usual membership accoutrements.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB, BRANDON.

Our other new member, Jeff Sargent walked us through a PowerPoint presentation of his “I’m here to help, I’m with the Federal Government” job.  We enjoyed some humorous cartoons portraying the difficulties folks may have in understanding what our federal employees do (note that 84% of federal employees work outside the beltway).

Jeff works for the Oregon Federal Executive Board.  These regional boards coordinate services and form partnerships with various federal and state agencies.  These Boards generate their own revenues from agencies they serve.  There are 28,000 federal employees in Oregon and SW Washington.  His primary focus involves assisting emergency preparedness, human resource management, newsletter and website coordination (“I’ve already spoken with Ray Fields about helping”), and supporting the Director of the Board

During FY 05, the federal government invested $1.3 billion in contracts and $22.4 billion in grants in Oregon.  See the following site for details on allocations of federal dollars in the US,  www.fedspending.org

Jeff was born in Kent, WA in 1962 and grew up in Dallas, TX.  He attended UCLA (“note that my wife Julie is a Duck”), and did graduate work at Pepperdine.   Prior positions have been with United Way, Peace Corps (2 years in Estonia), and advertising agencies.  He and  Julie grew tired of city life in Portland and took a long Saturday to drive this part of the state looking for a “place with a small town feel, we quickly selected McMinnville.  We are thrilled to live here, have a house just down the street.  Beside gardening, golf, we have really enjoyed Gallery Theater.”

Jeff noted he appreciated his wife Julie and father-in-law Paul Reese being here today. President Dan gave him the necessary membership ‘stuff’.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB, JEFF.

CLOSING

The last Concert in the Park was rained-out.  Thus Reggie Houston’s Box of Chocolates will return for a concert on August 14.  Note that Tuesday, July 31, Craucmore will be bringing the concert, and August 7 will be the 12th Ave. Hot Club.  BE SURE TO ENJOY THESE GREAT EVENTS.
