ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

SOMETHING NEW

In The Rotarian magazine (February 1923)

What Paul Harris Said

Rotary is not an organization for retrospection .It is rather one whose worth and purpose lie in future activity rather than past performance.”

Rotary's future in the 21st century looks bright thanks to the support of Rotarian donors all over the world. We have a Foundation that is well respected and admired by other global organizations, charities and Governments. The Rotary Foundation carries out our educational and humanitarian programmes with great efficiency and changes people's lives in every corner of the earth.

Isn't it a shame that our future activity is limited by the thousands upon thousands of dollars that are still locked up in District Designated Funds? There are Foundation programs that are crying out for help at this time - such as the Polio Partners Program, Our Peace Centers and the Scholarship Pool for Low Income Countries. Our district designated funds are applicable to the ANNUAL Programs Fund. It is vital that we keep on, year upon year, spending our contributions and doing good in the world.

Our Rotarian donors expect it, our vulnerable and scarcely-resourced World demand it.

Ryan Arzner concluded this segment of the meeting by relating the heartfelt story of Bembe, a man who sadly failed to realize that his memory of a particular elephant was not only faulty, but fatal.

INDUCTION

Jill Methven was formally inducted into the Rotary Club of McMinnville.  Along with Teresa Smith and Art Bradley, the induction ceremony was administered by our visiting District Governor, David Jay.

MAIN EVENT

Dan Gardner asked Assistant Governor Mike Caruso to come up and introduce the featured speaker, David Jay.  Mike mentioned that David spent 34 years in the forestry industry, and held degrees from the University of Michigan and the University of Washington.

David then took the floor, and began by exhibiting the official green jacket worn by all District Governors, and dismissed the accusation that he received the coat from Augusta National Golf Club in Georgia (the "green jacket" is awarded to the winner of the Masters Golf Tournament every year).  David mentioned that he was more comfortable with a chainsaw or a hunting rifle than making speeches, but he nevertheless launched into a very inspiring talk on what it means to be a Rotarian.  Honesty and Integrity were cited as two of the highest ethical qualities that Rotarians strive to achieve, and he encouraged all of the membership to advance these qualities in their professional and personal lives.

He then called upon Chuck Pattishall to come up to the podium to receive a Paul Harris Medal for exemplifying the qualities and ethics of Rotary International.

David then asked the club to ask "how can we improve?"  He cited four qualities that Rotary International President Wilf Wilkinson cited as important for the continued growth of Rotary:

*  Support the Rotary Foundation

*  Increase Membership

*  Develop Leaders within the club

*  Support Rotary efforts worldwide

David concluded with a story about his own personal experiences with Rotary on a recent trip to Guatemala.  He saw first hand the difficulties facing the people of that impoverished nation, and was moved to dedicate his personal charitable donations to the Rotary Foundation as a way of maximizing his ability to help others worldwide.

CLOSING

Dan Gardner closed the meeting by first presenting our Rotary Club pen to DG Dave and then having him sign a book to be presented in his name to McMinnville's Early Reader Program and reminding the membership about the Tuesday Concerts in the Park sponsored by our club and the City being held in the Oak Grove on the Linfield campus over the summer.
