ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

Digging through history to find out why the Rotary year starts 1 July

Rotary International News

Dollars and some good financial sense are why the Rotary year starts 1 July – at least that’s what the RI auditors said, according to 1912-13 RI President Glenn C. Mead’s report in the September 1913 issue of The Rotarian.

The auditors found that the organization’s affairs had been managed “honestly and carefully.” Still, RI was growing and had recently become an international organization, and its needs were changing.

The secretary and treasurer needed more time to prepare, audit, and check the organization’s financial statements by the end of the calendar year. The auditors recommended that the organization close its financial books for the year on 30 June, which was after the RI Convention. The Board of Directors agreed, and ever since, the Rotary year has begun on 1 July.

MAIN EVENT

Dudley Frost gave his Vocational Talk.  Dudley started by talking a bit about his boyhood home in Oakland, California, and told of meeting his wife of 55 years in high school.  He attended the University of California, and he proceeded to don a Cal Bears hat to emphasize his allegiance to his alma mater.  He confidently predicted that Cal would handily defeat both Oregon and Oregon State in the upcoming football season by dawning a Cal cap.  Reaction to this prediction was fairly unified.

Dudley's daughters both attended Linfield College, so Dudley was familiar with McMinnville for many years before their decision to relocate here.  His son followed in his footsteps by entering the construction field, and he currently resides in Flagstaff, Arizona.  As mentioned, Dudley spent many years in the construction and residential development business, and spent time in the 50's working for the California Highway Division (now Caltrans).  After retiring in 1995, Dudley and Gail eventually moved to McMinnville, where they now live on the former site of the Elks Park.  Gail has done many interesting things over the years, including working as a costume shop volunteer in Lafayette, California.  Dudley closed by saying that he and Gail plan to continue traveling, and they look forward to a long and happy relationship with McMinnville.

CLOSING

President Dan Gardner presented Dudley with a club pen and had him sign a book for the McMinnville Early Reader Program. He then closed the meeting by thanking the club for giving him the opportunity to attend the International Rotary Convention in Salt Lake.  He reminded the club that Dave Jay, the District Governor, will be at our meeting next week along with Assistant Governor Mike Caruso.
