ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

SOMETHING NEW

Why I Am A Rotarian

        June 24, 2007

If you look at the membership of any Rotary Club, you will see the diversity of backgrounds from which our members come; from industry, service, supply, and the community. A real cross section of society exists within each club.

But all these people, from the moment the meeting starts, from the moment the fund-raising event begins, from the moment the fellowship meeting takes place, have the ideals of Rotary in common, and none more so than 'Service Above Self."

And out of this we form lasting personal friendships and meet more people, through our help and support, broadening our lives and improving our understanding.

Going the extra mile, filling the unforgiving minute, has benefited people all round the world and will continue to do so as long as Rotary continues. And while there is a hungry mouth, a deprived community, a disease that has to be stopped, there will always be Rotary, there to help and support.

The tradition is safe. The work will go on. I am thankful that I am a part of it.

MEMBER RECOGNITION & announcements

Al Hansen was tabbed by Ryan for an Anniversary (39th).

Gary Eastlund was picked out to confess to his 1st Anniversary.

Leslie VanBlaricom proceeded to chide Ryan for omitting the fact that she, too, was celebrating an Anniversary.

Russ Rainwater reminded the group that the annual Rotary picnic would be held on August 10th.

Teresa reminded us to get our attendance make ups into her before the end of the Rotary year - the end of next week.

Eric Hanson provided a rather comprehensive account of his daughter's recent marriage.  Because of a misplaced license, Eric prevailed upon our own Judge Ron Stone to intervene on his behalf.  Judge Stone convinced the officials at the Mormon temple that a license need not be produced at the event.  Eric publicly thanked Judge Stone for his assistance in helping make the wedding a success.

John Swenson announced that his son, who has recently joined the sheriff's department in Sherman County, successfully captured a group trying to smuggle a substantial amount of marijuana into the region.  He presented a photo showing the huge cache of captured contraband.

Ray Fields was recognized for his appearance in a recent issue of the News Register under the headline "Proposed bill strikes blow for common sense". After two years, Ray, finally got his bill through the legislature to save the small special districts in the State money. It now awaits the Governor's signature.

John Larson reminded the group that the Demotion Party  at the McMinnville Senior Center for outgoing President Art Bradley will be held next week starting at 6:00 pm, and added that the event would pre-empt the normal Friday noon meeting.

Ryan Arzner concluded member recognition by telling a story about a woman stopped for speeding.

A driver is pulled over by a policeman. The policeman approaches the driver's door.
"Is there a problem Officer?"
The policeman says, "Mam, you were speeding. Can I see your license please?"
The driver responds, "I'd give it to you but I don't have one."
"You don't have one?"
The woman responds, "I lost it four times for drunk driving."
The policeman is shocked. "I see. Can I see your vehicle registration papers please?"
"I'm sorry, I can't do that."
The policeman says, "Why not?"
"I stole this car."
The officer says, "Stole it?"
The woman says, "Yes, and I killed the owner."
At this point the officer is getting irate. "You what!?"
"He's in the trunk if you want to see."
The Officer looks at the woman and slowly backs away to his car and calls for back up.
Within minutes, five police cars show up, surrounding the car.
A senior officer slowly approaches the car, clasping his half drawn gun.

The senior officer says "Mam, could you step out of your vehicle please!"
The woman steps out of her vehicle. "Is there a problem sir?"
"One of my officers told me that you have stolen this car and murdered the owner."
"Murdered the owner?"
The officer responds, "Yes, could you please open the trunk of your car?"
The woman opens the trunk, revealing nothing but an empty trunk.
The officer says, "Is this your car Mam?"
The woman says "Yes," and hands over the registration papers.
The officer, understandably, is quite stunned. "One of my officers claims that you do not have a drivers license."
The woman digs in her pocket revealing a license and hands it to the officer.
The officer examines the license. He looks quite puzzled.
"Thank you Mam, one of my officers told me you didn't have a license, stole this car, and murdered the owner."
The woman replies, "I bet you the liar told you I was speeding, too!"

Lee Vasquez thanked the membership for their generous donations of wine for the upcoming Wine & Art Auction in July.

Austin Wuellner gave a very brief speech, thanking the club for allowing him to experience a year in Guatemala.

MAIN EVENT

Carol Benedict introduced Dr. John Baker, author of a book that details the history of Camp Adair.  He related the story of how John Gallagher, a Corvallis man who owned a local sand & gravel company, convinced the Corvallis Chamber of Commerce to select a site north of town for an Army training camp.  With the help of Senator McNary, the Army accepted this site, and Camp Adair was built just months before the attack on Pearl Harbor.

He noted that, of all of the men who passed through the camp, 7,000 died in action, and 22,000 were wounded during World War II.  Over 1800 buildings were erected at the camp, and the hospital that was constructed was Oregon's largest at the time.  A facsimile of a German village was also built to provide soldiers with training in a mock-up of a hostile environment.  A 10-mile stretch of US 99w was modernized in a matter of months, replacing the old, narrow alignment between Corvallis and Monmouth.  They got things done in those days!

Dr. Baker and John Pfaff recounted many interesting stories about life at the camp and in surrounding towns during the war years.  He also delighted the audience with a recording of a special Christmas edition of the Jack Benny Show that was taped at Camp Adair.

President Art presented our speaker with a Rotary pen and then had him sign a book for McMinnville's Early Reader Program.

CLOSING

Art concluded the meeting by recognizing the crew that has provided our meals this past Rotary year and thanking the club for its support during his year as President.  He received a standing ovation from the membership.
