ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

SOMETHING NEW

PRIP Herb J Taylor

In his address to the 1955 Rotary Convention in Chicago, Illinois, USA.

The finest slogans are useless without action”

Herb Taylor’s observation at the 50th anniversary Convention is one of the simplest truisms.  Over fifty years later, Rotary has created a new slogan for a new age; a slogan that is designed to tell the world what Rotary is – its ideals and its aims. That slogan is HUMANITY IN MOTION.

In order to create the ‘motion’, Rotarians must provide the fuel to allow Rotary Clubs to move forward with their local and international service projects. Contributing to the Annual Programs Fund of the Rotary Foundation is an obvious way to provide HUMANITY IN MOTION. It’s not too late to contribute to 2006/07 APF and of course the more we can provide, the more action we can undertake. Without providing the energy, we are powerless. We cannot tackle the huge problems of lack of water, disease, inadequate education and hunger.

To release the potential power of Rotary, give generously to your Rotary Foundation and help sustain humanity in motion.

STUDENTS OF THE MONTH

Kris Olsen announced the current recipients of Student of the Month at Mac High, Susanne Sayles, and  Emily Hakala, both of whom are being recognized in the field of Marketing.

President Bradley  and fellow Rotarians, it’s my pleasure to introduce to you one of McMinnville High School’s student-of-the-month for May, senior Susanne Sayles, representing Marketing. Susanne is the daughter of Scott and Stephanie Sayles.  She has two older sisters, Shauna (22), a student at Southern Oregon University, and Sandra (19), a student at Chemeketa Community College. Susanne attended Cook Elementary School and Patton Middle School before enrolling at McMinnville High School in her freshman year. Susanne currently holds a 3.6 grade point average, and has been on honor roll every semester except one throughout her high school career (that dang junior year and AP Biology), has completed the requirements of her Certificate of Initial Mastery, and now a student-of-the-month recipient.  This semester, she is enrolled in Yearbook Production, Aerobics, Advanced Placement Psychology, Yearbook, United States Government, and Advanced Marketing.. She too has been active in our school’s marketing programs and in the Action Corner.  She’s also been an active participant in our school Leadership Program, is the Doernbecher Club President, National Honor Society Secretary, Yearbook Editor, a Bear Buddy to Wascher Elementary School students, is a Link Crew member, and girl’s team captain to the Rugby Team. Outside of school, she baby sits, enjoys bike ridding, reading historical non-fiction, hiking, going to concerts, and music. Her future plans include attending the University of Oregon where she’ll major in Marketing Logistics or Political Science, with a minor in Journalism. One of her teachers writes, “Susy is a tremendously hard working and dedicated student.  She is one of the most caring and concerned individuals I have come across!  She always puts the needs of others ahead of her own.  She did an outstanding job working with a handicapped student at Wascher this year through the “Bear Buddies” program.  She helped to build the self-esteem of this young lady helping grow both personally and socially.  She truly is a global citizen who has a very successful future ahead of her!

President Bradley  and fellow Rotarians, it’s my pleasure to introduce to you one of McMinnville High School’s student-of-the-month for May, senior Emily Hakala, representing Marketing. Emily is the daughter of Merrill and Debra Hakala.  She has an older sister, Elizabeth (20), a student at Portland Community College, and a younger brother, John (11), a student at Cook Elementary School. Emily attended Cook Elementary School and Patton Middle School before enrolling at McMinnville High School in her freshman year. Emily currently holds a 4.0 grade point average (4.043 weighted) and is ranked 1st in her graduating class of 499 seniors, she has been on honor roll each semester throughout her high school career, has completed the requirements of her Certificate of Initial Mastery, and now a student-of-the-month recipient.  This semester, she is enrolled in Advanced Placement Statistics, Advanced Marketing, and Medical Technology. While in high school, Emily has been active in our school’s marketing programs and in the Action Corner, where she is currently the assistant manager of the retail outlet. Outside of school, she has been very active in her church, works part-time at the Mac Prescription Shop, and spends her free time snowboarding at Mt. Hood. Her future plans include attending Chemeketa Community College to complete the Pharmacy Technician Certification Program.  After Chemeketa, she plans to head north to Whistler, where she’ll combine her love of snowboarding, with work in a pharmacy.  Her long term goal is to complete her bachelor’s degree in pharmacy, and own and operate an independent pharmacy in Colorado where she’ll snowboard for life. I asked Emily about her best memories of high school, and she told me about those great four weekends in February with friend on the ski bus heading to Mt. Hood.  She said, it was great!

MAIN EVENT

President Art introduced the first guest speaker, Amelia Larson.  Amelia, the 2007-08 Rotary Outbound Student, gave a brief talk about her family, her home, and her plans for the future.  She spoke of a love for surfing, snowboarding, basketball, and her pets.  She has 2 dogs, 1 cat, and 3 goldfish.  she noted that, in her 16 years, she has moved 16 times, so that moving about from family to family in Japan should not be any kind of a problem.  She concluded by thanking the club membership for their support, and for giving her the opportunity to travel to Japan for a year.

Art then introduced the second guest speaker, Ron Noble, McMinnville Police Chief.  Ron grew up in Huntington Beach, California, but moved to Oregon when in his teens.  He graduated from Dallas High School, then spent time at OSU, Clackamas CC, and Seattle Pacific, where he met his eventual wife.  Upon returning to Oregon, Ron planned a career as a paramedic, but discovered that he had a love for law enforcement.  He was with the Corvallis Police Department for 18 years before coming to McMinnville, where he has now been for exactly one year.  Ron and his family are very happy to be in McMinnville, and all of them are very engaged in the activities of the community, especially sports.  He also pointed out a strong involvement with his church.

CLOSING

The meeting concluded with Art presenting a club pen to Ron  and having him sign a book to presented in his name to McMinnville's Early Reader Program.  President Art displayed the certificate awarded to our Interact Club for their service to the community presented at the District Conference earlier this month. He reminded the group that next week is the Club Assembly, where future projects will be discussed and we will have a visit by District Governor Tom.
