ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

SOMETHING NEW

In The Rotarian magazine, March 1918

“I do not believe capital can afford to permit hunger, squalor or disease. Let us banish the city miserable before we build our city beautiful. Slums are political malaria breeders, and we must not have them in our midst...

We can dispense with ignorance, degradation and filth; we must have education, enlightenment, morality, and cleanliness, and more and more of it, if our civilization is to be made secure.”

Paul P Harris, The True Spirit of Service Can Redeem (the) World

In an unusually political essay, Paul Harris reminded a world re-emerging from years of global conflict what really matters to the ordinary citizens of the world. Many Rotary clubs have embarked on projects in the city slums this year and have worked tirelessly on water, literacy and health & hunger projects where it really matters.

Yet, in today’s world, nearly 90 years later, Paul Harris’ vision of a clean world without ‘filth’ takes on new meanings. Thanks to Rotarians around the world and through their visionary projects, Rotary is beginning to realize the environmental challenges of the 21st century. It is inevitable that Rotary will take a position of leadership in 'preserving planet earth' in the coming years.

*McMinnville High School’s student-of-the-month for April, senior Melissa Cook, representing the Family and Consumer Science Department. Melissa is the daughter of Brock and Kathy Cook.  She has an older sister, Tiffany, a 2005 graduate of McMinnville High School and current student at Linfield, and younger brother, Lucas, a sophomore at McMinnville High School. Melissa attended Columbus Elementary, and then Duniway Middle School before enrolling at McMinnville High School in her freshman year. Melissa currently holds a 3.2 grade point average, and has earned 21.5 credits to date.  This semester, she is enrolled in our Pre-School Curriculum Lab, bear Hugs Child Development, Strength & Conditioning, Senior English, and Pre-Calculus. While in high school, Melissa has been active in our school’s Cheerleading program, which recently placed 3rd in the State of Oregon, and has been active in our Early Childhood Education program. Outside of school, Melissa has participated in a great deal of community service with the cheerleading program, including Henderson House, and the community-wide clean up.  She’s worked in her churches nursery, done babysitting, and with Young Life. Her future plans include attending Chemeketa Community College to begin her degree in Early Childhood Education, and then off to a four-year institution to complete her Bachelor’s Degree. Melissa’s teacher writes, “She was selected as this month’s student of the month for her outstanding work in the department.  While in high school, she’s enrolled in all the courses offered through the department, including four levels of child development coursework.  We’re honored to have Melissa represent our department, as she is most deserving of this honor.”

**McMinnville High School’s student-of-the-month for April, senior Maricela Morales, representing the English language Learner’s Department. Maricela is the daughter of Ramon and Margarita Morales.  She has four younger sisters, Rosalina (17), Marta and Marana (twins 16), and Daniella (13). Maricela attended elementary and middle school in Guanajuato (Ona a wato), Mexico near Guadalajara, before enrolling at McMinnville High School in February 2005.  Maricela came to McMinnville with her parents and sisters following years of her father traveling to the Willamette Valley for work.  When they came, she was within 3 months of graduating from high school.  Several of her credits were transferable, but she had to make up a lot and work really hard on her English skills, which are exceptional. Maricela currently holds a 3.85 grade point average, and has been on honor roll every semester since coming to McMinnville.  This semester, she is enrolled in Geometry, Advanced English, Junior Health, Culinary Arts, English Fundamentals, and Technology in the Workplace. While in high school, Maricela has been active in our school’s United Cultures Club, the National Honor Society, and was selected as the Student-of-the-Year at Monte de Hoyes High School in Guanajuato, Mexico. Outside of school, Maricela has been involved in the St. James youth group, works part-time with Service Master Cleaner, and enjoys weightlifting, cooking, reading and music. Her future plans include attending Chemeketa Community College to begin her degree in Health Service, and then off to a four-year institution to complete her Bachelor’s Degree to eventually become a medical doctor. Maricela’s teacher writes, “She is  very determined and is passionate about learning.  Her dedication and enthusiasm in the classroom has made her a natural leader.  Even though some of her classes are taught in Spanish, she excels in all English classes as well.  We are all very proud of her achievement and leadership at our school.”
