ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

SOMETHING NEW

This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about a new volunteer position within Rotary called
the Rotary Foundation Alumni Coordinators (RFACs).
These new volunteer coordinators have been asked to encourage Rotary clubs and districts to
involve Foundation program alumni in Rotary activities; to urge clubs to consider alumni as
potential members of Rotary and as potential contributors to The Rotary Foundation; and to use
alumni as effective advocates for the programs of The Rotary Foundation.
Alumni include individuals who have been part of a Group Study Exchange team or have been
Ambassadorial Scholars or Rotary Peace Fellows. Do any of you know a Foundation alumnus
that might be interested in joining Rotary? If so, contact your area Rotary Foundation Alumni
Coordinator through your district Rotary Foundation Chair.

opening

Rolling out the red carpet for incoming Rotarians were greeters Steve Larson and Brent Adams.

After the club enjoyed a delicious lunch, John Larsen got the meeting officially under way with an inspirational moment, asking the club to think about giving this spring. Dan Gardner directed our attention to the flag and led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.

INTRODUCTION OF VISITING ROTARIANS & GUESTS

With a full agenda to contend with, President Art asked for the introduction of guests.

Sheriff and calendar model Jack Crabtree got the ball rolling by introducing guest of the club, Jeff Sargent.

Ryan Arzner, ever the social butterfly, introduced two guests to the Club—Derek Grundy and Don Sagers.

Visiting Rotarian and Californian, Dudley Frost, was introduced by Dale Tomlinson.

Walt Haight, thespian par excellence and father of a Rotary exchange student, introduced outbound exchange student Amelia Larson.

And finally, Brian Owen introduced Randy and Amy McCreith, of Bella Casa Realty.

MEMBER RECOGNITION & announcements

Next up, Ryan Arzner took to the podium to lead the club through the much anticipated ritual of member recognition. And first on his list? Ryan Arzner! The club helped Ryan celebrate his 31st birthday.

While he didn’t say whether or not this was his 31st birthday, Lee Vasquez did admit to celebrating another birthday on April 8th.

Unbelievably, McMinnville Rotary’s most devoted member, Ray Fields, is celebrating the completion of seven decades of birthdays with one more on the 14th.

Fellow birthday boy Craig Singletary celebrates his birthday on April 14th as well.

Moving on from birthdays, Teresa Smith came up to the podium to announce that it’s that special time of year again—the Rose Sale! Rose sale captains were announced, and will be contacting Rotarians to get the sale under way. Our goal is 1,200 dozen. Roses will be delivered June 8. If you don't know who your team Captain is, contact Teresa.

And to satisfy everyone’s curiosity Brent Adams gave the club our periodic MHS Rugby update. In short: “We dominate every game.” The Club was delighted to hear that we have a shot at the state title.

Van Keck, as devoted to the Oregon Ducks as Brent is to Rugby, announced that Coldwell Banker will be hosting their Spring Garden Swap on Sunday the 15th from 11:00 to 3:00, rain or shine.

John Larsen took the high road and fined himself for not recognizing Dudley Frost at last week’s meeting. John also announced that Walt Haight was in the paper three times for his role in a new play at Gallery Players, a comedy called The Foreigner. Check Walt out in the lead.

Lee Vasquez announced that he would like Art and Wine committee members to start taking save the date cards to wineries.

April 21st is National Youth Service Day and we are hosting a BBQ at noon for the Interact Club. Please see Chuck Pattishall to help. Chuck also announced that a Rotaract Club has been officially chartered at Linfield, thanks to his sponsorship of the new club.

President Art informed the club that May 4th is the District Conference in Salem at the new Convention Center. Registration is available online.

And finally, Dan Gardner announced that May 25th is the Club Assembly. We will be brainstorming a new long-term project, similar in scope to Rotary Park.

MAIN EVENT

Getting to know new Rotarians through vocational talks is always a treat. Today’s program featured talks from two new members—Brian Owen and Sharon Larson.

Leading off was Sharon Larson, the Executive Director of our local Boy Scouts. Sharon was born and raised in Tacoma, and was very active with the LDS Church. She had a wonderful international experience on her mission in Germany, and then finished her education at BYU. Sharon was formerly a member of the Lewis River Rotary Club, and was invited to join this club by Ryan Arzner, and sponsored by Brent Adams.

Sharon is passionate about scouting, and told the club a lot about the history and origins of the organization. She says that she loves having a job that is flexible and that creates a solid foundation for children.

Brian Owen, AKA “Son of Al”, is 39, which makes fellow Rotarian Al Owen REALLY, REALLY OLD. Brian is a recent transplant from the Sunrise Rotary Club, which he joined originally three years ago.

Brian first came to McMinnville in 1986 when he got a job at Audiotronics. At first he didn’t like McMinnville, and commuted to work from Portland. Several jobs and many years later, Brian loves our community, and is proud to be an active volunteer.

After ten years working at Nordstrom, a possible job transfer to Denver encouraged Brian to take a job at Western Title in McMinnville, where he worked for seven years. Brian has recently taken a new job at Western States Insurance, where he continues to be deeply involved with all aspects of community life. Brian was the 2005 Junior Citizen of the year, and is currently featured in a Habitat for Humanity Women Build Calendar, amongst many other charitable activities.

CLOSING

President Art closed the meeting by presenting each of our speakers with the official Rotary Club of McMinnville pen and having them sign the book being presented in their name to the McMinnville Early Reader Program.
