ROTARY'S FOUR WAY TEST
"Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?
2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?
3. Will it Build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?"

SOMETHING NEW

This week’s Rotary Foundation Thought is about how a Group Study Exchange can make a difference.

A GSE team from the Netherlands was scheduled to visit a district in Indonesia shortly after the tsunami disaster of December 2004. The GSE team members were aware of the damage that had occurred in their host district and embarked on a mission: to return home with a project that would benefit tsunami victims. During their visit, they discovered that many Acehnese students were no longer able to support their studies because they had lost homes and families in the tsunami. The GSE team leader launched the appeal to Dutch Rotary Clubs who, through the coordination of the Rotary Club of Bandung in Indonesia, were able to identify deserving Acehnese students that needed support to complete their study programs.

The project, which was created through a GSE relationship, will ensure that many students from tsunami-stricken West Java have the resources necessary to realize their dream of obtaining a university degree.

Nicole Wahlberg was asked to stand and talk about her tv appearance earlier in the week (thanks John Swenson)

Dave Pfendler slipped in a plug for Purdue...as he always does this time of year.

Sharon Larson told the club about her time and photo with Rotary's President Bill Boyd.

President Art Bradley thanked club members for helping with the dictionary project and the Rotary Four-Way Test Speech Contest.  He also announced meetings after the regular meeting for just about everyone:  the Board, International Committee, Wine & Art Auction and Rose Sales.

Maureen Chapman announced she will be a Grandma at the end of the summer.

Ray Fields announced that the Adventist School dictionary distribution event had been postponed until after Spring Break.  If anyone else would like to participate, please email him.

MAIN EVENT

Theresa Smith talked about a November 2006 New Orleans trip to see her son and the devastation she viewed in the St. Bernard Parish.  The Club watched a PowerPoint presentation including video  footage from Louisiana and told the group about St. Bernard Parish.  Prior to the hurricane, St. Bernard Parish had 67,000 people and now has 15,000.  Most of the population lives in FEMA trailers.  15 of the 20 schools were severely damaged and no libraries survived.  She talked about the St. Bernard Project and the opportunity for our club to get involved.  All money donated goes directly to the home owners.  The needs are many and include:  play grounds, school supplies, Parish roads, dictionaries, bullet proof vests for officers...  What can we do?  There are opportunities for hands-on work rebuilding houses, as well as the need for donations.

Ray Fields talked about how we can make each dollar of our contribution become three and a half dollars. He indicated that we need to make it an international project by getting a club or clubs from outside the United States involved and have them contribute an amount of funds equal to more than half the contribution that comes from our club and district.

The group referred the project to the International Committee for research and recommendations.

Wayne Bailey suggested each Club member donate $50...he was willing to put in his $50 and challenged other members to do the same.
